Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2020-08-17 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and I'll try my best to use an appropriate image choice.

I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

Yours truly,

a secret maker

I've done the RPF thing before. With pseudo-characters, but it was close enough to count. And I honestly thought it was all outta my system when the fandom crashed and burned, that i'd gotten to the point where I knew how weird and sort of invasive that stuff is for the real people behind the cameras with, like, real love lives and stuff.

And then I found myself getting properly into Game Grumps for the first time, and Arindan's trying to make itself front and center in my head. And I don't mind that. And I HATE that I don't mind that, cus I know I SHOULD.

B!S - even from the platonic angle, Arin and Dan's friendship is one I so fucking wish I could have with someone. Just that sense of security that we've got each other's backs even through things crashing down, you know?

(Thanks for making all these secrets, secret maker!)

I hate Reels on Instagram. A good chunk of people I follow are making them and they keep making “Check out my Reels” posts. It’s not just one or two posts, but dozens of them instead of their usual content. I just wanna say, “I don’t follow you for stupid videos, I follow you for pretty pictures”. I know I can just unfollow or mute them, but I’m just annoyed by them and can’t find anybody to vent to.

I wish there were more adaptions of fantasy books I love. Yes, even semi-bad adaptions. I'm just a very visual person, and as much as I love readings books, seeing different worlds and magic systems on screen would just be amazing to me. I don't want awful ones, but I'll settle for not great ones.

Fandom is very young (and, it appears, dumb) these days and it's terribly depressing. All these minute-long fancam vids, and saying "valid" and "you have rights"...I feel so ancient and isolated.

Just as I prefer fantasy over scifi, though I do love both, my preference tends to be for more magical superheroes over ones whose powers are based on technology. Thor, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther are some of my favorites. Steve is as well, and while his isn't magic, it is his own strength rather than tech. I've just never been that into technology. I avoid tech-focused scifi stories too.

I'm a huge Star Wars fan. Love all the movies, both animated shows, and the EU. I still haven't watched the Mandalorian. I know it is supposed to be amazing. But the people calling it that are those hating on the sequels I love. And plus Bobba and Jango Fett were my least favorite characters. And I generally hate bounty hunters and that type of anti-hero character. So Baby Yoda looks cute, but is that enough to make the show worth it?

I generally don't grow out of media I like. I might view something differently then I used to, but I generally still enjoy stuff I used to be into, even if it's just for nostalgia.

The one exception is Doctor Who. I used to be really into in high school, and I tried revisiting recently. I didn't enjoy it all. The writing was so bad. I tried both the Moffat and RTD eras, and I didn't like the writing from either.

Anne is my favorite Bronte, so it makes me sad that her books aren’t as appreciated as Emily’s and Charlotte’s. Book merch with Anne’s works are nowhere near as abundant as merch for Emily’s and Charlotte’s works. I pretty much never hear about Anne outside of a university English class and it bums me out because I just wanna talk about The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey, but my classmates just want to talk about Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.

Bonus Secret: I hate Wuthering Heights with a fiery passion because I’ve had at least three classes where I’ve had to study it and it pisses me off every time I read it. Also, I think Shirley’s a better novel than Jane Eyre.

I resent it when authors pair Bucky Barnes and Natasha. Not because I hate Natasha, but because any past they had was coerced and under the influence of drugs/brainwashing/torture. So making them a couple after Barnes is rescued just skeeves.

B!S: I really prefer her with Clint, and please get your het out of my OTP4EVAH!

I'm writing a Regency AU that I care enough about to finish, but not to do extensive research for. I hope people focus on the romance not the details.

I find the "My Vag" song/video by Awkwafina too mean-spirited to really find it funny. IMO she should've stuck with lines like "My vag won best vag / Your vag won best supporting vag," and "My vag, a chrome Range Rover / Your vag, hatchback, 81' Toyota." They're very tongue-in-cheek and all in good fun.

But then she's got lines like "Your fat ass is on disability," and "Your vag couldn't pass an HIV test," which I don't find funny at all. Plus implying Janet Reno and James Lipton were ugly, while they were both still alive, was pretty insensitive.

I'm honestly a little surprised more people didn't criticize it for this stuff when it blew up.

S!B - Suggesting that comedy is offensive often doesn't go over well. Someone's probably going to call me the woke police or something.

Although I'm dreading the drama new fans will inevitably bring, if there's one thing I'm looking forward to in relation to the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne remaster it is the resurgence of glorious Demifiend/Dante porn. Ah, aggressively delicious demon sex.

Killia and Laharl would make for such cute boyfriends and there's even gay banter between them in Disgaea 5 to boot. Sucks that I can't publish fancontent for them without feeling like I'd be thrown over board the ship, what with Laharl teetering dangerously towards shota in appearance. Sigh.

Although it most often receives acclaim for it's dystopian plot elements, The Handmaid's Tale does't get enough credit for its actual prose. It is beautifully melancholic and darkly whimsical in writing style in a way I don't often see, certainly not in this particular genre.

Due to its content, The New Kids (1985) certainly isn't a film I would casually recommend to most people but I greatly respect it for going full throttle with its subject matter, not tiptoeing around violence and instead relishing in it with a loving perversity. Sean Cunningham is truly a master of directing horror and The New Kids is one of his most underrated movies.

I have this weird distrust for anyone that makes a habit of quoting John Wayne or Clint Eastwood. Even if I genuinely liked the person before they made the deeply unfortunate choice of bringing either of those two actors into a conversation, I automatically put them on my shit list and I'll forever hold a grudge against them for doing so.

I've grown genuinely bored of drama in fandom. It's always the same things that get people riled up and there's rarely anything new or thought provoking said in response or relation. Then I realized these feelings extend outside of fandom too. It's not so much that I'm depressed, I'm just tired of the monotony of ~*~ 2020 Online ~*~ altogether.

Spoilers for FFXIV

As deeply as I love this game and do fandom-y stuff with my small circle of friends, I just haven't really gotten around to dipping my toes into the fandom proper. I hadn't heard one way or the other about the quality of it, but I guess I'd assumed it was more or less on par with how I was already used to approaching it.

Seeing the painfully stupid take of "Amaurot was actually just excusing fascism bc the Ascians came from there" made me recoil from any attempt to look any further in. To so drastically miss the point just so you have something to get mad about is not something I want to be even remotely adjacent to.

I agree with most of the criticism on the Hamilton musical (though I like it and don't care because I could say the same for M U L T I P L E also really popular historical musicals. Some ~woke~ stuff is just for white people to get a tiny clue, it's not really for me or my people.

But the real reason I'm glad that it got popular, and popular now, is that I find the founders absolutely ridiculous dumbasses with anger issues, and fandom treats them with the irreverence they deserve. You have no idea how happy it makes me that Thomas Jefferson occasionally gets the vain foppish villain treatment.

I really like that there are a lot of mediocre to bad parents in sequels of popular media with their kids. It's makes perfect sense that their trauma, or jobs, or upbringing, or lack of good parenting references, would make them unable to be great parents, and frankly I think this is true of a LOT of people's parents irl, so I really like that aspect of sequel media.

I just usually hate or dislike the sequel media or like LOK find it less compelling. I wish I got great sequel media with mediocre to bad parenting.

S!B: Most people hate the sequel media and use the not-great parenting as as reason why

(Potential References for secret-maker: Harry Potter in Cursed Child, Toph or Aang in LOK, Leia and Han in SW Sequel Trilogy)

WHY MUST SUGAR DADDY FICS ALWAYS HAVE SUCH A HELPLESS LITTLE SUGAR BABY?!

Let's earn this, people! I'm tired of the person being so helpless, needy, dependent, and under the control of the man. Make him work for it dammit!

Shout out to Cassim, Aladdin's hot & MIA dad just because I forgot about his fine ass until recently.
