But... making mistakes doesn't make you stupid.

NOT TRYING to learn, and NOT BOTHERING to research, and NOT CARING about accuracy is what makes someone that stupid american stereotype. You really are being too hard on yourself. If it was in your author's notes that you're completely open to constructive criticism and corrections so you can revise anything that you or your beta missed, then anyone who shits on you for a small mistake (and after all that work, any mistake is small no matter the topic you may blunder on) is the asshole, not you.

I'm personally at the point where I just roll with everyone being a hypocrite, including myself, when it comes to consumer culture - and fandom is no exception to that. Anything and everything has a good and bad side to its production history, it's just a matter of how well informed we are about the subject in question. People can accept or reject Harry Potter based on its author's opinions or whatever else, just like they can accept and reject any other media property - but it is important to realize that, yes, everything very likely has bad blood spilled SOMEWHERE in its history by very virtue of being a 'product'.

Oh, and expect A LOT more Harry Potter in the upcoming year. It will undoubtedly be going through a new wave of popularity with the upcoming game.
