101. If your suicidal feelings were swayed by a video game, I highly doubt it "saved" you from anything. These "*INSERT SHOW/VIDEO GAME/ANIME HERE* SAVED MY LIFE" secrets are so ridiculous. I can't think you'd have anything more than some teen angst or general depressed feelings to be 'saved' by something so trivial. Not be truly suicidal. For someone who deals with mental illness, I find it really tacky. I guess being medicated and hospitalized was the wrong path, I should have played World of Warcraft and be 'saved'.

I'm glad you're feeling better, but come on.

[identity profile] sevendeadlyfun.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, responding to anons is pretty pointless but so is F_S in general. So here goes.

I won't disagree that "WoW saved mah lyfe" seems pretty ridiculous. But for socially isolated people, online and/or fandom pursuits may be their only social interaction. Losing those crucial ties can be debilitating to someone with depression or other mental health problems.

And if you don't think that video games can be lifelines, I'd like to tell you that my 12 year old son was grounded from his computer for low grades and he did kill himself. He felt he'd lost the only thing that made him happy and why should he continue to live a life without happiness?

So, good on you for being skeptical but just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it's bullshit.

Re: 177

I don't think they're calling it racist and sexist by comparing it to Twilight. At most I'd say it's a comparison because both series are overrated.

Jonathan Coulton is awesomesauce, to be sure. But in spite of his many other amazing songs... Code Monkey still holds a special place in my heart. It got me through many long nights in the computer science lab. But, being a code monkey myself, I guess I'm biased towards the song. :)

Mandelbrot Set comes in second on my list of favorites, though.

If you mean the folks who only slash for slash's sake and get into fandoms and series because of the slash, and/or treat the het shippers like homophobic fucks, then yeah, I completely agree. (Had a friend in college like that. She sort of grew out of it, but she drive me out of a fandom or two because of it).

If you're just railing on the people who are in a particular fandom and prefer the slash to the het, however, then I don't agree and have to say you're being a bit hypocritical.

Reeeeeeeally hope you meant the former, though.

120. Hah! I see you troll. Afuganisu-tan doesn't even have a fandom.
This is either someone trying to fuel the "trendy" Hetalia hating, or one who mistook that for Hetalia.

120 - Maybe you should've mentioned the fandom... I wonder how many people will think this is a character from Hetalia. (Still, f!s needs a lot more Afganis-tan and Strike Witches hate to make up for the Hetalia RAAAGE.)

159 - Don't ever read "Death Is My Trade" by Robert Merle. No, really - I started reading it when I was probably a bit too young to read this kind of stuff, and in the end I had to put it on hiatus because it fucked with my head too much which scared me. I finished it later when I was much older and more mature, but it was still frightening. (As it's meant to be.)

108. Reptar/Joker. God I would have liked to be a fly on the wall when they discussed that.

115. Then your dog is a meanie. I too dance when noone except the family is watching, so I know how you feel.

124. The most awesome nerd of us all, then. I wish I understood half of what he was talking about... I am such a tremendous nerd-failure when it comes to math.

125. I need to know what the canon to the right is. Is... is it a manga about a man and a crocodile who are in love and wrestle? Is it just fan-art?

144. What be this canon?

154. I agree. Age is many things, including maturity. Even if you don't have it, at least there is a certain level of maturity EXPECTED of you, and failure to live up to that... I can't really be cool with that kind of behavior. Still, sounds to me like despite everything, you've managed to come out okay... and probably even more mature than those you talk about.

166. A binary mindset is not always a bad one. For instance, my usual shippingmethod is that I ship characters, when I do it, based on stated or perceived sexuality first, gender second. Basically, if a character has been stated as gay, then yes, I will ship them with characters that are of their own gender. If not? Then if I see Male Character A interact with Male Character B and Female Character A with about the same level of intimacy, affection, etc etc, I will automatically ship Male and Female Character A. It's just how I roll, how I'm wired. Now of course, I respect and acknowledge that not everyone does this, and do not force my views on those who do. But that is, if anything, a rather binary mindset regarding gender, one I do not feel should mean I ought to be automatically be 'judged' negatively for.

168. You know? I do agree, and I haven't even PLAYED a TR-game to completion, not even once. Games do not need unnecessary romance, we just want to kick ass. Let us have this please Crystal Dynamics... you were so god about it in Legacy of Kain, why do this now?

I suppose it's just not feasible to have no opinion on Matt Smith thus far, huh? I really need to track down a copy of something he's been in.

105: DW always struck me as being well over halfway to comedy territory anyway.

129: Argh, I fucking hate that. It's particularly bad for those of us who live in regions where it hasn't come out yet. :/

139: I can never decide if she can't act or if I just find her character really dull. *has had long discussions to this effect, and never quite reached a conclusion*

160: Those icons look really familiar. Not a huge fan of the ultra-close cropping style, though. 100% agreed about 100x100 pixels being ~*omg srs bsns*~. It's nice if people credit, but that's mainly because I'm one of those types who'll see someone use an icon, go to their userpics and want to see who made it so I can take it. *shrug*

175: People dislike Ada? Damn, I knew staying out of RE fandom was a good idea.

180: People haven't heard about that? I thought it was pretty well-publicised.

184: I got freaked out when I first played an RE game, but that was because I'd never strayed outside of platformers and J-RPGs before. Being on edge while playing is part of the fun, though; I played RE4 until nothing surprised/scared me, and now I find it too dull to play. :(

Comment jack, sorry.

There is fic for both Sanzo/Goku and Gojyo/Goku (or the other way around :P) but there is an overwhelming number of fangirls in the Saiyuki fandom that say that Goku is "too stupid" or "too young" for that sort of thing. It makes me mad (and sad at the same time), because there's so much more to him. Yanno?

Not to mention the fact that the story of The Journey to the West (which Saiyuki is based on) would not exist if not for Son Goku, the Monkey King.

Can you tell he's my favorite?
