Thank you, thank you. I agree 100%. I'm not a huge smut-fic reader, and I don't read romance novels. But I'm way more into the characters and how they react to the situation than anything else. The foreplay shouldn't be skipped over just to get to "Insert Tab A --> Slot B"! It's the part that can not only be more fun to read, but more fun to write, too! I'm so glad I'm not the only person who feels that way.

Not everyone is into written smut or feels like going out and looking at it just in case they stumble upon something to their tastes. That's perfectly reasonable, as we all have our personal turn-ons and whatnot. However, it seems that some people dismiss the entire genre because they've only ever come across the same old dry, repetitive garbage that reads like step by step instructions from a manual. "Link positioned his member at Zelda's entrance" blah blah blah. That gets old fast, and if that's all you've seen, it's easy to assume that it's all there is. As you've said, written sex can be so much more.

To add on to your points, the mood is also important. Erotic writing should read in a way that fits the situation - slow and sensual, rough and insistent, dorky and awkward, etc. If it does, the overall effect will be greater than the sum of the actual words and far beyond a bland narrative of "Cock goes where?"
