It's a fairly straightforward difference: a soundtrack relates to a movie or TV show, a cast recording relates to a stage production.

The difference really only matters if you're in a habit of hanging out in theatre fandoms, but since I do hang out in theatre fandoms and see people screw it up, it bothers me.

Ooh. Haha, theatre kid here not knowing the difference. I guess the way I see it is that it doesn't really matter much, as it's all semantics and everyone knows what you're talking about anyway.

(Also, I tend to avoid theatre fandoms because damn are they ever elitist.)
