130: I KNOW! All the hinting and leading up and then NOTHING! It was such a let down! And I too stuck through the revenge series hoping their would be atleast a little something, and no, they just throw in some stupid new girl D: It still makes me sad..

162: That's awesome ♥

When you're feeling sad, stop being sad and be awesome instead...so says Barney Stinson (well, paraphrased anyway).

106, The Long Walk is one of those stories that's seared into my brain. Come to think of it, some of my first book crushes were on Stephen King characters, Long Walk included.

108, I know just what you mean. We'd think the more the merrier, but...

120, the frustration comes from there being no delete key for people like yourself. Why would we want one of yours when ours are dishwasher safe and don't have some idiot attached to the other end?

134, I rofl'd because that's basically all of us with a search and replace on the name.

139, YES, THIS. Nine and Ten didn't exactly distinguish themselves with their behavior either.

146, Me too. Masks in general are scary to me.

137. Me too. I'm bi and I seriously have trouble imagining people only being restricted in their attraction to a single gender - either one. I honestly just can't get my brain around it. I have straight and gay friends who swear it is so, but it just doesn't make sense to me. Poor things.

138. So... you believe fandom turned your friend gay? Oookay.

139. YES THIS. Mickey was so awesome and she treated him like dirt!

161. YES PLEASE.

166. Hello you disrespectful, objectifying hypocrite troll! *waves*

166

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. And I realize I'm about to be overrun with people who think I should be banned from fandom and put to death for hypocrisy just because I agree with you.

At both the high school and college I went to, all the actual gays were scared away from their own gay-straight alliance organizations because of disturbing fangirls who couldn't separate slash from reality. None of the gays wanted to be associated with the many squeeing fangirls who wrote gay porn about their favorite characters. That's right - fangirls scared away gays from actively promoting their own rights.

People really need to separate fiction from reality. Slash and homosexuality in real life are two different things - slash being this wonderful problem-free fantasy where the issues that real gays face are rarely addressed. Many fangirls unknowingly make the mistake of equating the legalization of gay marriage to ending the social stigma for their fantasies. That's simply not true. Supporting the legalization of gay marriage is not excusing fandom's constant objectification of gays in fanfics, and I think fandom needs to own up to this. (Of course, this is just one type of person I am talking about. I am not talking about everyone here. What I am saying may not apply to you, and I recognize those who are truly for gay rights.)

Can you simply not care about the issue of gay marriage, like you say, and be a fan of slash? Yes, you can. You are not a hypocrite, nor someone who deserves to be called trash or banished from fandom forever. You separate fantasy from reality.

Just because you don't care doesn't mean you're automatically against it, which you've said. You just don't care about the political issue. Maybe all the angry folks out there didn't realize that the OP is probably straight and doesn't care because it doesn't affect them either way. Maybe I don't care about whether abortion is legal or not because I'm not planning on ever putting myself in a situation where I might want one, thus eliminating the need to take a pro-life/pro-choice stance? I know that's hard to understand for a lot of people, but this position does exist and it is a valid one. It's not apathy, laziness, or inability to think logically. The OP simply isn't planning on getting a gay marriage and doesn't feel the need to take a stance one way or the other. It just doesn't apply to them. Human rights issues aren't open and shut cases where you HAVE to support them. If you really think that, you're not thinking broadly enough. I bet some of you out there aren't big fans of keeping gun ownership as open and uncontrolled as possible. That's a human rights issue too. But I'm sure a decent number of you just don't care about that because you're not getting a gun and don't view your lack of support as not thinking. The same goes for the legalization of marijuana, or any other political issue for that matter. My point is, there's a decent chance you "don't care" about something as well that's very important to someone else's lifestyle.

Please don't think I'm comparing gay marriage, a person's right to marry whoever they love, to abortions, guns, and marijuana. I'm not. I'm comparing stances on general human rights issues and explaining why it's perfectly fine to just "not care" about one issue or other.

...

...

I wouldn't be posting anon if I had some serious balls, but I kind of don't. Sorry.

148: I have never agreed so strongly with a secret on F!S. I am the same way. I cannot relate to someone if they dislike music, and I sometimes have a difficult time relating to them if they aren't completely obsessed with it. Music is my life, and I talk about it all the time. If someone cannot understand my love for it, then I assume that they'll never be able to understand me.
(Actually, the reason I'm so late in responding to this post is because I was competing in a jazz competition.)

177: I think I read that fic. (Seriously, how many Tetris porn fics can there be out there?) It almost broke my brain... and I wouldn't have it any other way.

This, boys and girls, is a textbook example of privilege and exploitation. The OP does not herself have to worry about the extensive discrimination that gay people endure on a daily basis (marriage is far from the only or even the most important issue), so she just doesn't care. Instead, she picks and chooses the parts of "gayness" (or whatever you want to call it) that she enjoys, i.e. the interesting stories that one can create about a relationship, and calls it the most important or enjoyable thing, as if a fictional relationship could be completely separated from the associations with real life problems. The associations and feelings are there in people's heads even when they're not on the page.

But the real hallmark of privilege and exploitation? Declaring that only the parts she personally likes are important and berating anyone else who tries to explain that it's more complicated than that. It's like if you were to write porn about how hot it is when two black characters get together and how it's extra special because they're black, but then turn around and tell people to STFU about racism and the problems these characters would actually face if you're going to write about them in any sort of realistic way.

YOU CAN'T HAVE FUN WITH GAYNESS WITHOUT DEALING WITH THE COMPLICATED REALITY THAT IS REAL LIFE, ASSHOLE. If you try, all you do is fetishize gayness for your own pleasure which just contributes to a mind set that makes it that much harder for gay people to be recognized as PEOPLE in their real lives.

137: It wouldn't matter how much I loved/was interested in/was mentally attracted to a woman, I would never, ever have sex with her. Ever. The idea of engaging in lesbian sex is repulsive to me and nothing will change that.

146: The masks are towards the end, though. And there isn't much of them, you should push on through if you've made it that far. Not that the ending won't mess you up, because it will, but you should watch it. >D

So what, if we write you some Naruto fanfiction where Naruto and Sasuke can't have their tru-luv end in marriage, you'd feel bad for them....but not if REAL PEOPLE can't?

WTF, are you like 13? Grow up and get a life outside of fandom. Maybe then you might get some common sense

Re: 166

[identity profile] dynamics-xx.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Fantasy is just that...FANTASY.
People should be allowed to enjoy their fandom without having to take it to the streets and have it be real.
Haven't you EVER read something or liked something in a fandom that you wouldn't necessarily want to happen in the real world?

And..furthermore, things in reality have consequences.
Fandom things don't. Maybe whoever posted 166 does not think gay marriage would contribute positively to the society, but reading about gay-ness in fandom doesn't change society at all.

I'm not saying I agree with him/her, I'm just saying that fandom is for fun, and nothing more.
