I agree to some extent. But the romance in the show did play a part in the characters and their journeys.

As someone who ships canon, I loved seeing Mai turn on Azula because of her love for Zuko. And I loved seeing Aang wrestle with being the Avatar and his duties vs. trying to love and be loved. Seeing them go through those aspects made the characters that much more enjoyable (not that they weren't enjoyable already) and added other dimensions to their stories and to their personalities.

But what I think clouds it is the utter venom spewing from the different sides. Why cant people just enjoy their ships? Why do they need to attach such negativity to it.

Kataang/Maiko happened, but that isn't any reason to behave poorly towards the non-canon shippers.

And just because the canon ships happened there is really no reason for the non-canon shippers to degrade the characters, the story, etc.

The ships wars are nasty and a focus because a) people choose to act that way rather than taking the high road and b) people allowed it to go on.

109. I think a lot of people don't realize that Scientology =/= Church of Scientology. Scientology itself is just a religion that's as crazy as the rest of them and shouldn't be hated on any more than other religions, the CoS (ie the organization) is what should be criticized. Scientology is not harmful, the Church of Scientology is harmful.

Actually, Scientology in itself IS harmful. It teaches people that they do not need to see a doctor when ill (especially mentally) and that everything bad that happens to you happens because you pulled it in.

And unlike, say, christianity, practising Scientology outside of the CoS is strictly prohibited. You are a squirrel if you do this. You are a supressive person and the scum of the earth.

103. For the record, when my IRL friends gab about Avatar, we tend to talk about the awesome plot-twists, music, characters, animation, fight sequences, emotion, drama, joy...
I only started focusing on the ship when people started getting so mean about it and telling me I was a total delusional tool because the ship I enjoyed more was Zuko/Katara. I get defensive, but honestly, I wish people didn't keep trying to make shippy-drama and let people enjoy their fragging ships. On both sides.

109. As folks have said, Scientology isn't really a religion. If you can trace your founding to the same man that wrote Battlefield Earth and said that starting a religion was where the real money is, well...sorry, no. It's creepy and cultish, cuts people off from any "non-believers" in their friends and family, etc. Honestly, as a practising Christian, I would find that kind of creepy if it happened in any religion. But Scientology has the added bonus that you have to pay to move up in the ranks.

I agree that both ships need to lay off. Trust me. Even though Kataang happened, non-canon shippers sometimes make me feel like I'm a mental case for liking it. It would be nice to have respect for my choices as well.

Had you said "I think he's a misogynist because... and that's why I have issues with liking him", then that would have been your opinion, and I wouldn't have argued with you, but to say "He's a misogynist", making people believe he'd said or done something other than what is represented in his songs is bordering on slander.

Being offended by Hetalia because it makes fun of ALL countries: totally okay

Being offended by Hetalia because it makes fun of YOUR country: it's fine to think this, but it makes you look a little douchey because it seems like you only care about how your country is portrayed, which is a very egocentric and damaging way to view anything.

Being offended by Hetalia because the author 'didn't do the research': fucking fail, and obviously you've never read any of the comics because he actually writes about what he found out in his research on his blog.
