158. Yes, thank you. Honestly, I have quite a few people on my FL who like the comic. And I think they're allowed to like it. However, I think it's dumb for multiple reasons. That doesn't mean I don't have a good sense of humor; it just means the comic, to ME, is offensive. Though, I admittedly find it to mostly be poorly drawn and written crap, historical inaccuracy not withstanding. I am still befuddled by this mentality by some (not all, thank you) fans that you are apparently disallowed to not like it.

It's not like I read an interview or something - I was just listening to his songs over and over (as I tend to do when I really like someone/thing) and I realized there was a thread of disturbingly negative attitudes towards women running through them. Obviously not all of them, but the ones listed in the background of my secret were the ones I found most troubling.

I guess I didn't explain this well enough because everyone's reaction so far has been the same - total bafflement.

Perhaps I should do a followup secret.

158: The more secrets like this I see, the more I begin to understand why some people think patriotism is akin to a mental disease. Feeling "ashamed" because some webcomic portrays your country in a way you disagree with--who the fuck cares?

You know the truth about where you live, and I have yet to see a Hetalia fan look down upon any of the countries. So even if you rage over the portrayal, chances are, all it's doing is giving people a new appreciation and willingness to learn about the country you're so proud of.

Not coming down on you or anything, but... I just don't understand. How can random people on the internet make you hate a character on your television screen? I really don't think it's fair to blame others for your not liking a character anymore. I've never let other people's opinions dictate what my opinion will be (especially online, where everyone's got an opinion on everything). Sure, hate her fans, even though not every fan is "rabid". But how does that make you not like Chloe herself?

Honestly, every character has their "rabid" fans. That goes for Lois and Lana, as well. But I don't let those hateful members of fandom screw with my enjoyment (or lack thereof) of Smallville.

173 It was just your typical teenage self-loathing yaoi fangirls ruining the entire fandom. If you don't believe me, just read some of the old listserv posts (if they still exist). I mean, damn, I was only 16 at the time but the fandom turned me off to the whole series and Gundam in general for the longest time. And I never understood that whole thought process in yaoi fandom of "we have to hate the female lead character." I never had a problem with yaoi or slash itself but the inherent misogyny of many of the fans really turned me off to it altogether for the longest time.
