115. Are you kidding? The best fics in the entire fandom are the ones that do historical research and then use the characters to express them in a non-sexual way! I love those, they're the reason I stick around. I mean, I'm as big a BL fan as the next heterosexual anime fangirl, but it's those stories - and the ones that the original creator has done in that similiar vein - that make me really enjoy Hetalia. ^_^

141. Yea! Good for you, OP!

162. I'm loving Demons.

I know it's a BtVS ripoff... but the fact that it's so wonderfully cracky makes me not care. Also, it has more ships than you can shake a stick at.

(also... well, a long-standing love of Philip Glenister, even with a dodgy US accent, means I basically have to watch. *shrug*)

And... Christian Cooke was in 2 Doctor Who eps. And is cute. So yeah.

109: I was friends with Scientologists, and while I have learned that many claims about Scientology are highly exaggerated and do not truly generally apply, I also found that Scientology has numerous teachings that I cannot, for the life of me, find in any way acceptable. I am not the slightest bit ashamed to say, yes, if someone decides to believe in these teachings, they are not a person I can wholly accept either. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Religion is a conscious choice of living, believing and thinking a certain way. What choice a person makes says something about who they are. That's not unfair, or judgmental. That's how it is.

[identity profile] wllw.livejournal.com 2009-02-02 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I always find it annoying when they say you can't judge people for their beliefs. If I knew someone ever decided to subscribe to a set of beliefs that include stuff like Fair Game, I'd feel perfectly justified in losing respect for them.

bandom fluctuates depending on the band's activity... as far as MCR goes, there's some buzz about the Watchmen single, but that's about it. check back when there's a new album/tour. you haven't technically missed out, it's just kind of slow at the moment ^^;

[identity profile] emma591.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)

173. The Gundam Wing fandom almost put me off of joining anime fandoms entirely. *shudders* They had entire forums dedicated to bashing that girl.

N!S 6) YOU'RE WRONG. SO WRONG. Angel? Is a three-dimensional character. His creepiness is shown to be a BAD thing. He's a dork, and can be an enormous dick sometimes. But the important thing is that his dickishness gets him actual consequences. When he flies off the rails and does something out of line, his friends get PISSED AT HIM. It's 100% clear that Whedon did not intend for Angel to be ZOMG TEH PERFECT MAN!!!1, but rather a flawed person trying to offset some of the sins of his past.

What's more, Angel actually DID distance himself from his OTL when he realized how doomed their relationship was, and he would never DREAM of making Buffy into a vampire, even if she wanted him to. Because that would be irredeemably selfish of him.

tl;dr: If Edward had been handled the way Angel was handled (i.e not made into a steaming pile of Marty Stu), I probably would have liked him too. But he wasn't. So there.

Too Big 3) Please elaborate on HOW the characterization was inconsistent.

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
109. Okay, I have to respond to this, I'm sorry. I understand where you're coming from; I really, honestly do understand your feelings. I felt the same way for a while. But there is a huge, other side to this that needs to be understood.

Yes, it's wrong to judge people based on their beliefs. I personally don't care if someone believes in Xenu or anything else Scientology preaches. It's not the belief that bothers me; it's not the belief that should bother anyone, no matter how "crazy" it might sound.

The problem is that Scientology is a manipulative, dangerous cult. It sucks people in, brainwashes them, disconnects people from any outside influence that might convince them to leave, goes to great lengths to suppress and harass people who speak against Scientology, and once you're in, they make it incredibly difficult to get out. They do this in a deceitful way, starting with "Dianetics," and don't reveal any of the strange stuff until people are so far in they'll believe anything they're fed.

And Scientology requires money of its members. A lot of money. As a matter of fact, that's the whole point of Scientology, according to its founder: "I'd like to start a religion. That's where the money is!" (and other quotes to that effect). This is why people choose not to support celebrities that are known Scientologists. Because the money that goes to them will go to the "church," and they will use it to hurt more people in the name of making money.

And finally, these celebrities act as mouthpieces for Scientology. Because they are valuable to the cult, they're treated better than the rest. They get perks. And they draw new people in.

The reason people cite the Xenu story and talk about how crazy it is is because... yeah. It is crazy. There's nothing wrong with believing it, honestly and truly, but how many people do you think would actually convert to a religion that told them that up front? And that's the point -- telling people what Scientology is about, getting rid of their ignorance so it can't be exploited, protecting people before they get in too deep.

I'm sorry to rant at you. I know exactly where you're coming from. But this isn't about belief; it's about protecting people from a cult that will trap them and hurt them, and keeping them from gaining the resources to hurt more people. I only write this much so that you can understand a little better.

Someone already linked it, but check out http://www.xenu.net if you want more detail and facts, rather than my vague summary.

Re: 109

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The celebrities were sucked in as much as anybody else, though. If you really believe Scientology is a dangerous cult then the members, celebrities included, should be viewed as victims.

109. I don't hate them, mostly I just feel sorry for them. But celebrities and your average Scientologist go on different paths anyway: the celebs are pampered at special 'Celebrity Centers' in exchange for their ever-rapid flow of money, and your average people are just drained dry.

But some questions:

-Do your average Christian, Muslim, or Jewish denominations order their followers to cut all connections to critics of their religion, in many cases breaking up families?
-Does your average Christian, Muslim, or Jewish church charge $400,000+ to reach the highest levels of enlightenment?
-Does your average Christian, Muslim, or Jewish church stalk, harass, sue, and make all efforts to discredit critics with a special secret task force?
-Does your average Christian, Muslim, or Jewish church force order its most loyal followers never to take drugs for any reason, sometimes resulting in death?

I could go on, but the point is that Scientology is far more destructive than mainstream churches, and I hate that they're harnessing star power to bring more bodies into the shop. I don't hate the victims, though.

103. Honestly? The ship wars are why I left ASN. I'd get bitched at just for having a Zutara icon so I said Fuck 'em and left. I get a lot better conversations in my shipping comms (of all kinds) than I ever did on ASN anyway. Not only that, but Political fandom is slowly taking over my brain and that fandom is beautiful and non-wanky. <3

152.- Uniforms are really convenient and can be pretty cool. I wish mine had been cute like the anime ones, they were boring. =/ One school in my city had sailor uniforms, and I wished so bad to attend that school, but I was too old. =/

Oh, and you can wear shorts under your skirt to prevent flashing people when the wind blows it up.

Re: 152

(Anonymous) 2009-02-01 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd think wearing sailor fuku to school is all fun and games. It isn't. Mostly I liked it, but there were two HUGE drawbacks for me:
1. Having to wear short, pleated skirts in a place that's really cold throughout the school year is extremely uncomfortable.
2. Our school was all-girls, and that, combined with the sailor-fuku uniforms, made it a magnet for pedophiles. Seriously. Like, every few months they would arrest men hiding in the bushes around our school and jacking off to prepubescent girls in gym class. It was even worse when the pedophiles managed to fool the administration and become teachers. I have a lot of sad stories about that sort of stuff. :/
