103) Blanket hate against something always makes me think there is something more going on. After all, I have no interest in knitting, but I don't hate it. The few things I do actively hate, I can trace back exactly what it is about them that hooked into my "grrrrrrrrrr" spot to earn that. A lot of times it's the painful, awkward social circumstances around the thing, rather than the thing itself that makes me just reject it with prejudice. I assume the same thing with other people. They hate anime because once they watched it, and they had awkward, unpleasant, embarrassed feelings that they never want to repeat.

105) Is that... is that The Darkangel? Was that turned into a movie? It can't be, obscure but beautiful book is too obscure.

106) The movie was lame, but it was oh-so-much opportunity for fic. It would be nice if someone took the concept of the movie (which could have been good) and actually wrote it properly instead of all that wtf chainsaw arms and car crashes, and randomly dying roommates. I mean, we had alchemy and the Thule society. It could have been great drama if the script hadn't been written by a mediocre fanfic writer.

156) How can you not? I mean it's not like those of us who are squicked by RPS aren't vocal about exactly why it bothers us. It all comes down to empathizing with the celebrity as a person, and the non-consensual nature of being depicting doing and saying things that you'd never do or say. A lot of us can't separate the reality of a celebrity from his idealized public image. While anything goes in fiction, in reality the golden rule applies.

163) Aw for craps sake. No one has to ship anything they don't feel like shipping. This is fucking entertainment, not a philosophical statement. Shipping is an emotional/libido thing, not an intellectual choice. We are not obligated to be turned on by every pairing in existence. You are an asshat if you pull this kind of passive aggressive crap in your fandom.

165) Don't take me seriously then, because I think that some fics are better written than the canon that inspired them. Some canon is pretty damn unsatisfying.

I loved Da'an, and I thought no-one else remembered that show...

Well it would help if they ever get the DVD rights out of litigation and actually allow people to watch it again.

139-I'm with you, although considering the shabby treatment of actor and character, I'm not sure the show, the Beeb, or the fandom even deserves him any more. But still come back Owen and give Jack another male (aside from Capt. John that he has actually chemistry with.)

163-I love Rachel. I love Rachel and Susan. I ship Rachel/Keith because there's so much damn chemistry and potential for fucked-uppedness, but that's just a fandom/fantasy thing. I have no desire for Rachel to leave her real-life relationship. Just out of curiousity---how do you feel about shipping Rachel/Ana Marie? (Cause if you think Keith/Rachel shipping is heterosexist, but were ok with Rachel/Ana Maria, I might think you were heterophobic.)

What about someone who likes exactly one or two works of anime, and feels that the combination of a cultural gap, 13-30 year old target audiences, and the relative youth of the mainstream genre all seriously reduce the odds of finding something that appeals to them?

What about someone believes firmly in the rule that 95% of everything is awful, and that the number can be extended to 98% or higher in the case of anime?

What about someone who's been shown several episodes of various popular shows, and considers them about as puerile as western TV generally is?

Anime can produce masterpieces, but it very rarely does. Live-action film has a better track record - not because it's better on average, but because there's more of it, and so there's a higher chance of seeing some stray bit of genius shooting past the edge of the bell curve. There's just not enough anime for it to have a Casablanca, The Godfather, The Dead, or, for that matter, Young Frankenstein.

That we have Grave of the Fireflies is impressive enough, really.

Silliness aside, you raise an interesting point. Why can people only fall into the categories of liking or disliking anime? There's no gradation there. Kind of reinforces the idea that fandom is inherently divisive rather than inclusive, imho.

There's a lot more live-action film masterpieces because anime is a much younger medium. Give it time, I think. (Though to be totally fair, a distinction needs to be drawn between film anime and television anime, since film and tv are inherently different mediums. This raises a whole other set of problems, of course, which I'm not really prepared to deal with, intellectually.)

I'm a bit curious about what you like (other than Grave of the Fireflies, which I can't watch because I bawl my way through it) and what you dislike. What are your thoughts on Miyazaki? Cowboy Bebop?

Er... to be honest I'd be more interested in Roslin.

Tess LMAO! oh well i'm sad that people hated you :( but as for the fictional character... i find it pretty understandable! you didn't like a saint. lol - her character really sucks. sorry. lets be honest she was boring as hell with her obsession about destiny. she tried to copulate with the guy that everyone shipped with the other girl (she was the one he was in love with too. also they were like the main core super ship of the show. everyone against them was like a kamikaze). she seduced him in order to get pregnant and deliver him and the other aliens to their enemy. she killed the character that everyone loved after she had used him like a slave for months.
