114 - I SHIP IT TOO. And fandom is not dead, you just need to know where to look.

128 - All Disney villainnesses are ugly? WUT? Maleficent wasn't, the Evil Queen in Snow White wasn't (until she became the hag), Ursula sure as hell wasn't (her design was based off of a drag queen, though, so how's that for a weird quirk?), Cinderella's stepmother wasn't ugly. Her stepsisters weren't drop-dead gorgeous, but they weren't hideous, and Anastasia was kind of quirky and cute, in my opinion. Am I missing anyone? I agree with you; I think the villainnesses are meant to be intimidating and elegant and wicked!

144 - I wish my high school chem teacher had been Mrs. Frizzle. Instead I got a lady who got deported and left us with a string of bad substitutes, including a guy who believed in voodoo (and brought in pictures of a witch doctor digging into a human with his bare hands). Yeah, electrons and moles? I have no idea.

126 - I gave up watching that series because it just made me think "Anita Blake ripoff" every time I saw it. Do not want.

128 - Maleficent was totally hot, anyone saying Disney evil women are ugly is carzy.

130 - ♥ I don't know if I agree, but Cybersix secret makes me uber uber happy.

132 - People think Ken has MPD, wtf?

170. No, no, it makes perfect sense (I've never seen Armada, but it still makes sense). Anyway, I suppose that's a good first sexual fantasy to have. :D

163. Ummmm....no.

156. I think RPS bothers me because I think good slash entails characterizations that are true to whoever you're writing about, and interaction that makes sense. Because you don't know these people IRL -- it's only possible to go by hearsay, if you're the type that even bothers to keep who you're writing about IC -- it's impossible to write anything good; they're not characters in fiction, where everything about their characterizations and personalities is handed to you on a silver platter. Most RPS, it seems to me, is a projection of the writer's sexual fantasies. Which brings me to the other reason it squicks me so much -- it's highly exploitative. It's OK to slash fictional characters because they're not real. RPS, at least IMHO, is akin to pornography: real human beings presented as nothing more than objects whose sole purpose is sexual gratification. I don't know about anyone else (and I know I'm having a difficult time explaining this), but I find this just a teeny bit unethical, if not more so.

(Of course, if anyone has encountered some good RPS that has made them change their minds, I'd love to read it. Just because I avoid RPS doesn't mean I'm not open to it.)

146. That comic didn't convince me to see Twilight, but it was hilarious nonetheless. JLCM is one of the few webcomics I read. <3

132. What series is the "doing MPD right" image from?

103. ...You know, I would agree with you, if you didn't swear so much and act like the entitled douchebag you rail against. (And, quite frankly, I have found the "right" anime series, as you put it, but it doesn't stop me from thinking most of it is poorly written, overhyped, formulaic fetish fuel. I do like anime as a medium, don't get me wrong, but I'm very picky with what I see.)

115. See, I loved Ami in the manga and anime, but I liked her a lot less in PGSM.

129. What, how come my mom didn't tell me there were lesbians on GL? It's okay, I made fun of soaps for my whole life, and then found myself watching As the World Turns for Luke/Noah. I still think soaps are ridic for the most part, but I couldn't believe I was watching them at all.

146. I read Twilight only for the lulz, and trust me, they are endless!

154. I felt so bad for Taycob, he was one of the only actors who didn't badmouth the series at every chance, he was always all smiles at premieres, etc., and he was the one who got all this talk about being replaced. :(

163. ia, to a point. I don't ship Rachel/Susan actively, but people who seriously ship Keith/Rachel (unrequited for Keith or friendshippy is different because that's totally true) make me go wut.

163. I agree, too. In some sense, shipping Keith/Rachel is no worse than shipping Keith/Anderson. But.... it still bothers me a little bit (anything with sex in it, or srs bsns shipping--I can handle silly fun stuff, or even Keith being attracted to Rachel and knowing it won't go anywhere).

It's different to "straighten" gay people than to slash straight people, for me, because having out gay people in the public eye (or just out characters in fiction) is so rare, that it feels like squashing that to write them as straight. Whereas if you write Keith falling for Anderson, well, there's a hundred other straight anchors out there anyway.

Blah blah meta blah, I like my Rachel gay. XD

Factory-direct men also look like that, you know. There's loads of the skinny little buggers where I live.

Also, most FTMs I know (including me, lol) look more like Vincent D'Onofrio or Jack Black than androgynous pretty bois.

OP here.

It's not him being skinny or pretty. It's something in the bone structure in his face. Heck, my bf (also FtM) has more of the Jack Black thing going on than the Ryro thing, tbh. :P

[identity profile] oldstarnewshine.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
103. This. I'm so sick of people dismissing entire genres (not just anime, I'm so fucking tired of defending scifi and YA novels on a regular basis) based on stupid pretentious bullshit.
117. *sympathizes* My parents let me do what I want, but I always get caught by people who are... shall we say less lenient. I think it's genetic, and I say that as a bio major.
132. WTF, people give Ken DID in fic? The entire fucking second half of the series was entirely painted and given some real depth by the fact that IT WAS KEN WHO DID THESE THINGS. What the hell, what the hell, what the hell.
133. I hear all of Harry Potter in Jim Dale voices now. But I sort of like it.
153. No one does not ship them. I refuse to believe it.

115. PGSM made Ami a lot more interesting for me, too, though I never actually hated her. But I was getting more of an Ami->Usagi vibe than anything with Makoto. Also, goddamn were Rei and Minako shippable. Sailor Moon could use more PGSM-based yuri fic.

Hah! I am right about something for once. I thought that Wilmer Valderrama was from Venezuela, for some reason. If his dad is, that's close enough that I don't feel like an idiot. :D Thank you.

101. For me it was Night of the Living Dummy and the first Deep Trouble. And, not RL Stine, but did you ever read the Scary Stories books? They had really creepy ass pictures too, and some of them still scare the piss out of me.

105. I'd do it to boff the Graverobber and Blind Mag. Your reason is so much better than mine.

126. I am getting ready to leave the house to go see this movie! I feel like this is a sign assuring me that I will love it.

128. Um. Yeah. This. Ursula was pretty sexy. When she's singing Poor Unfortunate Souls? Body language? Yeah.

144. Is there a person out there who did not wish for Mrs. Frizzle as a teacher, at some point? I held out hope my entire school career.

150. Pete & Pete? In my f!s? Today is a good day.

173. Hi, you just became my new favorite person.

This is so random, but thank god you put in the character names for 105, I was so curious what that was from!

Also, awesome icon!

In Dissidia, they've made her waifish and wussy, probably because she's the token woman for the side of good.

I thought Memory was amazing, and the best book she's ever written.

Komarr, A Civil Campaign, and Diplomatic Immunity are all fine, and better than many books out there, but they feel extremely weak to me when compared to the power of her earlier Vorkosigan books, and especially when compared to Memory.

And then when I found the fanfic universe of "A Deeper Season", I realized why I didn't enjoy those last three Miles books as much- things were no longer difficult for Miles. Sure, he had some problems, but they were all casual problems. He was no longer being deeply challenged, and coming up all the stronger for it. In "A Deeper Season", he's forced to grow and change and mature more, not just settle down.

And I don't see how my opinions on that make me a bad fan. Just one with different views from you.

103. What about those that..... oh, I dunno.... grew out of it and found bigger, better mediums and found out the world is just a little bigger than anime? Headcase.

You do realize that people who think anime is something people should "grow out of" and move on to "bigger, better mediums" are exactly what I'm trying to complain about, right?

Yes, the world is bigger than anime. There are other mediums and fandoms out there. That does not make them automatically better.

It depends how it's used. There are series where characters have MPD that are not the stereotypical evil side versus good side. Agito/Akito/Lind in Air Gear, for instance. And although Lind looks to be the 'evil' one, he's actually the original personality (and doesn't appear to be all that evil, yet). I agree that it's a bit of a cop out when used to make a clean split like that, but that doesn't mean it can't be done well at all.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2009-02-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
132. So you're blaming fans making up stupid shit on the canon itself? Sure, Sylar and Ken didn't have the most consistant progressions to their development, but that doesn't mean that there's anything in canon to support the idea that either had MPD. You as much as admit it in your secret, then go on to bash that. If you're insulting the fans of either, by all means, but I'm not sure why it seems to read like you're insulting the canon for something that fans came up with.

Alle/Halle, obviously, you have a point for. That said, Gundam 00 has so many more characters that are much more evil than Halle, and several that progress in levels of evil, so I doubt that the writers were just fishing for a way to make a character come across as both evil and not-evil, since they do a reasonable job of it on several other characters.

I read it the exact same way, the first time! But I think the OP is trying to say that the fic authors giving people another personality are the bad ones, in Sylar/Ken's case. (Typing that made me kindofwant, oh dear.)

H/Alle I don't think was designed at all to give Alle an excuse to be evil-- he's established pretty early, as totally separate, and Alle was shown to have a lot of problems with Halle's actions. There ARE lots of other characters where they have them doing bad things, but still being good people. Halle just has DID, like Setsuna has PTSD.

...except Setsuna's PTSD is a lot more realistic than Halle's existence, and I would lovelovelove for it to be shown somehow that Halle wasn't just another personality, but instead some some HRL designed thing and/or just part of Alle. Because at his age, and only one alternate personality? I think not.
