147. Well, I think that, disturbing as it was, that scene was necessary. Utena's role as "the hero" wouldn't have been as poignant if her values were never shaken. She had to fall down hard - and then rise again. I'm a bit on the fence about the ending - her death would give the story some kind of closure, but I think the point of it was of having no closure; that's not the end, it's the beginning of life in "the real world". I think the movie, cracktastic as it was, made a clearer statement in this respect.
(besides, I loved her pointless blabber throughout the whole episode - pre sex and DURING the sex, and then the sudden silence in the car. It shows her anxiety and immaturity about it, which is, for once in that show, appropriate for a 14 years old.)

Well, everyone else is commenting on this.

I've tried several different anime shows, of many different genres. Hated them all. I don't like the art style in general, I didn't like the pervasive dramatic conventions and character archetypes, I didn't like them. Why should I keep trying? If you don't like cheese, and you try all sorts of different cheese and still don't like them, why bother continuing? Why not just say "I don't like cheese," and move on with your life. But you, anon, seem to think that I should keep trying when everything I know and have experienced about anime indicates I won't find a show I like. I'm not going to torture myself spending my fandom hours watching shit I don't like just because you think I should.

TL;DR: the only people more annoying then people who categorically hate anime are the people who think everyone should like anime.

I apologize for my nerdrage. I should have waited until I cooled down to word the secret, and I regret it a little bit now.

To clarify, I have no problem with people like you at all. In fact, I applaud you for exploring anime of several different genres and going into them with an open mind. My chief complaint was with people who have seen only one anime, or only one genre of anime, or only one art style of anime, and assume that there will never be anything for them within the medium. The bile in the secret was directed at people who think they're somehow superior because they don't like anime, when in fact their impression of it is incredibly narrow.

The real issue, for me, is the genre one. A lot of people try to shoehorn anime into being a genre, in which all shows are essentially the same, and if they don't like one, they won't like any. That's like saying all movies or all TV is the same. "Hannah Montana" =/= "Supernatural," and "Cardcaptor Sakura" =/= "Ergo Proxy," I don't care how you cut it. So again, kudos to you for recognizing that and making the effort.

103. Pacing, archetypes, story, style?

Not all anime are slowly paced. Not all anime are quickly paced.

There are anime with archetypes of every kind, and a few characters that defy any single archetype.

There are serious stories, funny stories, happy stories, sad stories, cracky stories, sports stories, fantasy stories, psychological stories, shallow stories. Etc.

Styles go all across the board. People will come even more styles come a few years. Even now, there are anime without huge googly eyes and small mouths. The inverse is also true.

My conclusion? That's why so many people aren't into anime. It's an entire subset of animation. No way would one person want to tramp through them all in order to find their perfect one if the first few didn't cut it. Some people want to do other things with that time. That's all.

Heck, it's why I gave up on TV in general.

YAY! I loved that the '90's cartoon adhered to canon a bit more closely, and this new show seems pretty good too. I'm really excited about the new movie too, honestly I think my favorite was X-Men 2 so far.
