Why the specific requirement for subtext? I understand the opposition to pairings where two characters are thrown together regardless of how much sense they make as a couple, but that's more an issue of believable development (well, lack thereof) than anything else. In some cases - especially canons that leave a lot unsaid - characters without any subtext between them can be plausibly slashed if a writer can get a romance to work well with their personalities and situation.
