Word for word, I could have written this. ITA, OP, and I wish JKR had somehow acknowledged the sadness of it all instead of seemingly assuming that Harry Nobly Changing His Mind About Him and his apparent unofficial resorting into Gryffindor in the epilogue counted as a happy redemptive ending for him. Why yes, yes I am still unhappy about it.

Three reasons I love The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya;

1. Fun, loveable characters that mesh well. Kyon is a sarcastic narrator with his feet on the ground, whereas Haruhi is a loudmouth brat with her head in the clouds -- it made for some hilarious interactions between the two. I enjoyed the dynamic Koizumi and Kyon had as well, though not as a romantic..thing. They're interactions were hilarious. "HOLD MY HAND." "..........WHY?" ":)" That's me, though, as long as I'm amused, I'm happy.

2. Detailed, fluid animation. I think the Hare Hare Yukai is overhyped to the point I just want it to do already, but the ending animation was so fluid and realistic looking that I was frankly, floored. What goes on in-series is even better and is about as high-quality, even moreso, than large studios. Kyoto Animation only has an upwards of about...sixty animators, I think? Where as say GAINAX and BONES has quite a bit more than that. It was just boggling in my opinion.

3. The light novels. This doesn't...really count, I suppose, but after reading the original light novels, my enjoyment of the series was increased a hundredfold. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll just say the light novels are ultimately the reason Haruhi is my favorite series.

One more thing, EVERY popular series is proclaimed "OMGTHEBEST!!!" by it's fantards. Do I enjoy it more than any other series I've seen? Yes. Do I think it's damned amazing? Yes. Doesn't mean I proclaim it to be the best series out there, though. It's just a personal favorite.

As one of the people who thinks it's spectacular, I like that it has classy art, creative characters, and a premise with bottomless potential. Oh, and Haruhi's boredom and frustration Speak To Me.

In terms of its general appeal: I suspect the basic premise has a lot to do with it. As with Doctor Who, it's a series where anything could happen, with strong characters at the center to tie it all together. Even if a given plotline is lackluster, it's set in a stunning framework.

(Obviously I don't Speak For Every Haruhi Fan Ever, but this would be my guess.)

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
101. Well... did you? because in that case you are already pretty awesome?

112. But is it REALLY necrophilia when they are in fact moving? Or, in poor, poor Raziel's case, don't even HAVE orifices left to ravage?

116. Until the pants came off? Probably, yeah.

134. I guess that it was because in his heart of hearts, Neku wasn't a loner. He was just bad at reaching out to people whose company he DID desire. Well, either that or the fact that the whole point of TWEWY was to point out that coming together and being social is what drives the world forward, and that there are many a loner gaming nerd who COULD profit from learning such a lesson in the rather nice way TWEWY actually taught it.

107. Hey. Elitist jerk. The 'infected' in these film are a type of zombie. Aside from being infected with Rage instead of being undead, they fit the other requirements. So they're modern zombies. How about you pick something less ridiculous to be an elitist asshole about, yeah?

145. That is, hands down, the best line in the entire series. The rest... I don't ship Lily/Snape either (actually, I was annoyed by that whole theme even though I knew it was coming), but yeah. I understand your sentiment. In the AULand in my head, he lived, ran off with McGonagall, and they lived in a little house miles from anyone and snarked at each other for the rest of forever.

156. Yeah, this. And that unhinged little spazz Chiana was easily my favorite character.

163. Sounds awesome. Where do I sign up?

Because they're not dead nor have they ever been dead and zombie = undead. You wouldn't call someone with rabies a zombie so why you would call the infected in that movie zombies I don't understand.

OMG! A Moonlighting secret! I LOVE MOONLIGHTING!

[identity profile] vivalana.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
107. I believe that it was the wise words of Yatzhee that said that a true zombie game (or movie) is when you and the last three people on earth are huddled around in a basement somewhere while the remaining population of the landmass stand outside meaningfully rubbing their bellies while waving ice-scream scoops. That is a zombie game and when you can bring that about then it doesn't matter if the zombies are replaced with carnivore koalas, it's still a zombie game (or movie!).

125. Well, yeah, it's shitty to be a rabbit, but Hazel and Fiver and the rest seemed to make a decent and meaningful go of it despite all odds. If anything, Watership Down had the opposite affect on me. One of my many mottoes is WWBWD, and if it's something better than I would have done initially, I need to toughen up, because right now I'm being beaten by a rabbit.

I'm sorry if this comes across too glib. That was just my reaction to the text, but I'm sorry it left you feeling the way you do.

154. Agreed, and nice pic.

165. I've seen an episode and a half over my mom's shoulder, but I keep holding out with the blond girl with the scary skeleton guy on the left. So bad. I do NOT KNOW WHY.

169. Yeah, Desdemona is cool.

184. Sneeeerk. That fic would be horrifying.

However, more characters makes for more dynamics, and dynamics thrive in a story like TWEWY'S. So Neku was kinda doomed to make friends or it wouldn't have felt as satisfying, I think D:?

When people who ship them bash the real-life women they've dated? That's insulting. To, you know, the WOMEN. Shipping the two of them? Not insulting. You know why? BECAUSE IMAGINING SOMEONE'S GAY IS NOT AN INSULT TO THEM. Not unless you think there's something wrong with being gay, of course. Get over yourself, and stop pretending your hate is all felt on behalf of them. They're just fine.

104. Aw, nothing wrong with loving PPG! I watched the movie a few weeks back for the first time since I saw it in the theater, and I'm 26. Give credit where credit is due, I say.

125. How do you figure? The characters fought so that they could go on living. Now The Plague Dogs- also written by Richard Adams- that's a movie/book that'll make you feel like life isn't worth living. I believe Watership Down to be quite life-affirming, personally.

128. That's kind of how it happened for me... I went into it thinking it would be all girly, superficial BS. Honestly, I still feel like it's mostly fluff. But there are still things in it that I can relate to, so it's one of my guilty pleasures.

146. Wait, they got together? Last I remember, Jenny was unbelievably pissed at Shane for... well, being Shane.

148. I have three words for you: Read the book.

She was pissed at Shane because she was in love with her. Jenny admitted it when Shane was fed up and gonna move out. They kissed and now they are together.

116 (TALES OF DESTINY SECRET??? :DDD) and 134

(Anonymous) 2009-02-09 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
116. I'm known as a Leon fan IRL (not like "I'd hit that", but like, "he's so cool! I wish I could cosplay him") and I'm slightly concerned that people will read this and think you're me... but Leon and Tales of Destiny really need more love, so this secret made me kind of happy, too...

134. At the end of the game, he has what, three close friends? Probably four close friends, once a certain someone is forgiven? (Or five, if you like the fanon that Eri joins the group.) Maybe a mentor, too? That doesn't make him an extrovert, and personally, I don't think he'd always want to be with other people all the time, as much as he realizes that they've got potential, and that the world's not a bad place. Couldn't he still be an introvert, just now one with a social circle?

116. Oh, I like him for his character as well, but I'm also jealous of him. XD Yes, it needs more love. If ToD:R were localized then maybe...hey I can fucking dream.
