132. Oh for the love of...Avatar is not the first instance of Asian actors being passed over for roles! The reason I, because I can't speak for anyone else, but the reason I was finally mad enough to get involved was because Avatar is a prime opportunity for some lesser-known Asian actors to get some spotlight, and they're getting the shaft. Again. This isn't so much about Avatar as it is finally getting someone, somewhere to realize that oh hey, there is an entire talent pool going to waste when you limit ethnic actors - not just Asian, mind you - to certain stereotypical roles.

not the op but Wall-E got completely shut out off every category in favor for Dreamworks' Kungfu Panda. Not just best movie but script and score as well. (Categories in which Wall-E is in competition with "real" movies at the Academy Awards.)

Considering that Dreamworks was also the event's "gold sponsor" (Pixar was only silver) people have been calling shennanigans.

I feel the same way about a lot of ships (lol see icon), but in that case, aren't you still taking the guy's perspective, and doesn't the chick become irrelevant, as the focus is on the guy's feelings? I mean, when you're into that kind of ship, it doesn't matter who or what he's in love with, because it's his character you're interested in, not the significant other. You're still identifying with a guy...

I guess I'm saying this because I chronically suffer that in het ships, and then I wonder if I'm not blocking out the het in some other way (maybe not as extreme as the OP, but it's there).

Most racism in the media at least pretends to be subtle, but there is no way to justify this except: "Yea, it's racist, we didn't want to hire Asian kids". I haven't really got into the protests just because I'm waiting for there to be some sort of stupid excuse.

Either way, what does Prop 8 have to do with a bunch of Asian characters randomly getting turned white in a movie? I'm assuming you mean the gay rights issue, but you do realize that opposition to Prop 8 got a ton more press and funding? It's not like Prop 8 was an obscure issue by any means, it certainly was more publicized than the new Avatar movie.

And what do gay rights have to do with racism in the media, other than their both being included under the broad heading of "discrimination"?
