104. I think he's cute purely in a "sad puppy" kind of way. But I still definitely don't like the man.

161. Did you go through a guro-loving phase or something?

104.See I think hes a really nice guy, but he was seriously misguided as president, I just wished people respected him just a little bit and stop trashing his politics, you don't have to like him just agree to disagree i guess.

147. See i can see hes a very charismatic guy and is extremely loads better talker than bush, but i honestly do not understand the almost hero worship of him to be honest. Hes seems like a really nice man, and i respect him just as much as bush, I just don't GET it i guess.

Maybe its just the politically apathetic in me. i could care less if they were red or blue. lib or conserve or what not. If they are smart and can help make this a better world, I dont care what you are, go ahead and do it.

147 OP

126. This secret puzzles me in the same way that comments like 'Jensen Ackles is fugly' puzzle me. I know, to each his own, everyone's taste is different, yadda yadda, but even if I tilt my head and squint, I can't see Josh Holloway as anything but gorgeous.

150. Lol, I think you're right. I liked Jo (and Ellen and Ash and the whole Roadhouse angle) anyway, but I just can't find anything to like about the new Ruby. Yet. I'm trying because it looks like we're stuck with her.

157. I sympathize; I'm the same way. I have social anxiety problems in RL and no surprise, I have social anxiety problems online, too.

157

(Anonymous) 2009-02-17 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's the worst, isn't it? I'd thought that perhaps it'd be easier interacting with people online, and it turns out to be just as hard. :|

111.

I couldn't agree with this more, and as someone who aspires to work in the field of animation it makes me miserably sick knowing that films with depth, character development, story, atmosphere, craftsmanship and a love or the art put into them are dying out...

I want Coraline to succeed so badly, if anything just to prove that storytelling is an art too and a "cartoon" does not have to be stock-piled with meaningless non stop jokes aimed at the parents, rather than the children, to be a good movie.

Of course, that being said, it's integral that the silly, jokey movies do not die out either... I just don't want to be suffocated by one "Shrek" after the other.

161.

I assume you're in med school or doing intensive anatomy study, but my god could you not have used a picture of someone who looks NINE?

161. Med student? I once made the mistake of reading one of my Mum's books (she teaches pathology and used to teach anatomy) and could only see other people as squishy bags of organs for WEEKS.

170. OH MY GOD. As soon as I read this secret, Song Of Freedom came on my random playlist. I miss you, Donna! ;_;

You are a bad person.

121

[identity profile] sarolynne.livejournal.com 2009-02-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm not sure this will be helpful, and I'm not exactly sure how you fucked up, but I can make a guess. I think I can point out part of what's wrong with your response, though.

You don't have to admit that you have no compassion. I really doubt that's what people want of you, since it wouldn't really help anything or anyone. However, when you ask "how can I fix this?" I think you might be sending the wrong message. While many of us are socialized by school and our parents to ask questions like that when we screw up (I know I certainly was, anyway)when you're dealing with people who are your equals, who aren't your parents or your teachers or your friends, it can really send the wrong signals. You can come off like your putting the burden of making yourself a better person on other people, which is inconsiderate--it's not their job to fix you. It's your job to listen, and lurk more, and not repeat that mistake. It's your job to apologize again the next time you make another mistake, to acknowledge that you fucked up again, and then wait for the kerfuffle to blow over and keep trying. While a lot of people ask that question very innocently, or at least unconscious of their own inclination to shift the blame, it's a pretty common technique to shut down conversations in some circles, and if people have dealt with that attitude before, that's the experience they're bringing with them when they speak with you.

The other problem is often (from my time on the other side of the argument where I'm not the one getting in trouble) that there's no way to "fix" it. There's not a right answer. It's like if I complain about the way a female character is written, and someone else asks me how it OUGHT to be done... well. There's not one answer to that. There's not just one "right" answer. There are a lot of answers, and many of them are problematic. Many of them might be wrong. In some situations the best you can do is not be wrong.

I'm not sure how helpful this is, but I figured I would give it a shot.

You can come off like your putting the burden of making yourself a better person on other people, which is inconsiderate--it's not their job to fix you.

The thing is, sometimes a person who did something wrong may not know what s/he did wrong, and so is asking what it was. IMHO, I don't see anything wrong with this. And while I agree the burden of improving oneself should be on oneself, if someone doesn't know what went wrong, s/he has every right to find out what. Sometimes you can't improve yourself without input from other people, even people you've never met, you know? It might send the wrong signals, but continuous ridicule and mocking is hardly an appropriate response.

There's not a right answer. It's like if I complain about the way a female character is written, and someone else asks me how it OUGHT to be done... well.

Personally, no one should be asking you how something ought to be done in the first place -- if you don't like something, that's all there is to it, and other people should just live and let live. And sometimes, anyone asking that question is just looking for a confrontation anyway.

In some situations the best you can do is not be wrong.

There's nothing wrong with being wrong about something. The worst that can happen is someone comes along and changes your mind, and that's not a bad thing. Or perhaps getting mocked, but then again anyone who does that either doesn't have a logical response or doesn't know how to formulate one.

Hate to break it to you but the genre of animation movies is currently not experiencing some sort of creative drought period that makes Coraline the oasis in the desert. Even with trash like Family Guy around, Hayao Miyazaki still makes movies, Pixar just released a hit movie with Wall-E - which went entirely without dialogue for very long periods of time.

Things could be worse, really.

Re: 111

[identity profile] memento-macabre.livejournal.com 2009-02-17 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but I agree and disagree with this. Pixar and Miyazaki are indeed godsends, but it was nice to see a stop motion film, in major theaters no less, in the midst of all of the CGI in western film making too. I do, however, agree that they are not to be overlooked at all (as I feel Wall-E is one of the most influential animated films to come along in a very, very long time)

It could be worse, but I do wish they would at least break from the Shrek formula when making comedies. But, where there is an annoying side, there is also a bright side. It IS nice to see so many companies that are not Disney making blockbuster animated films. Much as I miss classic Disney, it also makes me smile to see a master like Hayao Miyazaki gain recognition in western animation as well.

From what I've found out, just by searching, is that fanart is banned unless you send it into the comics and get it published.

Oh, I can relate. One of my friends is joining a Harry Potter RP without having read the books and is COMPLETELY destroying it. He created an OC who is a suicidal, gay (literally, this isn't meant as an insult) emo kid whose dad beats him and whose older brother is in love him. Harry Potter fandom just isn't like that!

121. That's tough. I've never really been in a position like that. I mean, not in fandom, anyways. I don't think I could stand it if everyone was such an asshole to me even after tried to fix shit. All I can say is to move on. If they can't accept the fucking fact that you screwed up, that you're sorry, that you're trying your damned best to fix things... Well, then they aren't very good friends.

125. And this is why I'm an anon. Everyone thinks she's a GODDESS in our fandom. Sure, she writes well and stuff... But, fuck. I hate her. Thank the fucking Lord none of my friends know.

Just a little butthurt over the fact everytime she posts a work, mine doesn't get any comments. Least I admit to that shit, right?

not!fandom: ...Oh, geez. I... Sincerely hope you aren't anyone I know. I'd feel terrible if, well, yeah. Really, really terrible. I can't help but feel there's something familiar about you, though.

Yeah, cause I totally said that.

I don't mind if you don't like it. What I mind is if you give up after a couple episodes, and given the nature of the show it's a fair point. If you have seen enough of the show to know what it's about, what it's like and its nature but still don't like it then I respect that. Disagree, but fine.

But if you don't even give it a chance? THAT is what I said.
