104. Same reason it happens in canon, I expect--It's something different and interesting.

145. I hate them too, but not to that degree... Sometimes it's really hard to figure them out when you're new to the fandom. Why can't we all use the old character/character?

157. This makes me sad. :( Especially since I have seen hentai pics where they don't even put the holes in the right place.

144: I was going to say, "Congratulations, you're a good writer. But that doesn't mean you aren't a douchebag," but then was made aware of the fic you're talking about. :\ I backbutton'd that shit about two paragraphs in. So, no. Judging by your own standards, the entire fandom you're talking about does not have shitty taste. Also? You are still a douchebag.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
Did you actually read the secret? The fic was supposed to be crap. Thanks for proving the point.

So. Um. I seem to have written it.

Bondage, hatesex, total PWP, will probably be locked within the week because I am very afraid of what the distinguished congresswoman from the District of Columbia would do to me if it were found out. In the meantime, enjoy.

OMG OMG OMG I am so glad I came back here to look at more comments after seeing the show because that was AMAZING. Thank you so so so so much!!!!!!!!

152. Scrubs makes me sob all the time, and it's a comedy. A comedy making you cry shouldn't be any weirder than a drama making you laugh now and again. :/ (Course, I dunno about you, but I've cried at EVERY EPISODE of Scrubs at least once, which is more than 'once in a while,' bu whatev. XD)

169. Superheroes are beyond boring when they have little to no weaknesses. My favourites are the ones who can be easily killed, but still risk their lives to save the world. It's not as admirable, otherwise. At least not to me.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
127. I have not read/watched Hetalia, but as a Finnish person I have to say that this secret made me burst into laughter. Beautiful? Sweden/Finland? No way! There may be some comradeship, but many Finnish people still can't stand Sweden and the Swedish (individuals are fine, but as a whole). I've also heard that the character supposed to be portraying Finland is terribly OOC.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Must be all that Japan-made fluff. It's true that they're completely not in sync with actual history and relationship between the two countries, but putting that aside the characters are terribly sweet (and awkwardly married LMAO) XD idk I think that's where the op was getting at.

yeah, i do think they (the characters, obviously not the countries) are kind of cute and happy too, but don't mind me OTL

The TF crowd is into creepy porn. They will ruin perfectly good characters to get it.

Yes, I mean 'ruin'. Men don't get genderswapped into women, they get genderswapped into GIRLS- squealing, shopping princesses incapable of anything more complicated than helping their artist jerk off. Yeah, there are exceptions, but it's like finding a needle in a haystack made out of radioactive hay.

Re: 104

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
Right, because liking to have fun and enjoying shopping are things that make you a bad female?

IAWTC, for the most part. Of course, those aren't things that girls/women necessarily do, and it's really sexist to assume that all girls/women are like that. It's also really sexist to assume that every boy, if suddenly girlified, would be a giggly shop-o-matic. But what's wrong with a girl who likes shopping and doesn't take life too seriously? To be un-sexist, do women have to have nothing in common with the stereotypes and unfair expectations that are/were put upon them?

While wanting women to be able to be strong and self-reliant and have some sense of gravity to them is a good motivation... "it's inappropriate for female people/characters to have stereotypically female interests/traits" is still a role limitation based on gender. And that seems to be what you're trying to avoid?

[identity profile] probing-grays.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I....might know which fanbase you're talking about, in which case, yeah, I might have to agree. >__>;;

157

[identity profile] cutesiness.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
Hentai portrays women very, very unrealistically. Men in real life (besides the occasional douchebag) won't care what your slot looks like, as long as they can slip their tab in. ;D

139.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Wall-E's one of my favorite movies period, I may have teared up slightly the first time I saw it, and, while he's not a robot, I found Jeff Garlin's character completely adorable, and the fanbase still makes me feel bad. Mostly because I could not care any less about Wall-E or Eve or Wall-E and Eve without removing part or all of my brain.

I like that movie for the score, M-O, references to classic sci-fi movies, Auto, all the Apple Computer stuff, the captain, and because it makes me think of that one episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry opens a restaurant and Jeff screams out "Cock! Cock! Grandma! Jizzem! Cock!" I don't know why exactly that's the first thing that pops into my head but... Yeah.

If that movie was all Wall-E/Eve, I would not have bought the DVD. And even still, I only bought it because I was getting two movies for $10 at Blockbuster and Wall-E was the only good movie aside from Hancock involved in that particular sale.

Re: 139.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
I liked Wall-E and Eve... but I also really liked John and Mary and their subplot and nobody seems to remember them at all. D: I feel where you're coming from.

I'd say, "making a little bunch of fangirls very happy" omg Gaston with no pants on :)

[identity profile] vashti-lives.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
103. I agree with you 100%. I adore Morgana in fandom, and I like the idea of her, but that actress cannot act at all. While watching the show I always end up being so indifferent to her. It's aggravating because she could be one of the best, most layered characters in the show, but instead she's just boring.

139. No, Wall-E isn't that good. I don't think it's Pixar's best movie, in fact it's one of their few movies that I didn't really like at all. In my opinion you haven't missed out on some big secret. It's cute, but nothing more.

You think less of them as a person? That's going rather far. We're talking about pairing naming convention here, not mass murderers.

Those writers would care to have such a judgmental fan as you. You're not as important as you'd like to think you are.

You even tag your "stuff" with conjoined ship names, so you must've found them useful or amusing in some way. Get over yourself!

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
104. Hmm. I actually have an in-progress one that so far has managed to mutate beyond "omg lulz and hot", but I'm not sure why it did.

It started with a random urge to write yuri in a fandom and my lack of a yuri pair in that fandom. So I flipped everyone—brothers became sisters, mothers became fathers, etc. But obviously just changing gender does not change the story, so I had to make some alterations. I think my characters are to the point where they're OCs for all intents and purposes now. Girls and guys are socialized different, and we react differently, so when I looked back over the story and thought about how it would change... the changes were big. Maybe it's anti-feminist of me or something, but I simply couldn't see a female version of a character making the exact same choices. Over the new timeline, little changes snowballed into bigger changes, and by the time I picked up with the story there was so much that was different that I kind of fell in love with it all over again.

Of course, there's the smut and the lol of it all, but that was really what hooked me. Fanfic is pretty much a giant "what if" question, and gender is one of the most basic building blocks of character. Changing it can change everything.

Also for the sake of randomness, I remember a DBZ Fanfic that sex-swapped Bulma and Vegeta, then proceeded to genderbend Vegeta, all within the context of a larger story. It was amazing. (B-chan, I miss yoooooouuuuu.)

105. I see a Demona! That is awesome!

Also, IAWTS.

106. If your friends would disown you for indulging in a silly vampire series, then they're not very good friends. You should start being honest; you'll feel better.

107. Writing is supposed to be fun. Reading is supposed to be fun. There's no obligation on anyone's part to keep doing it when it stops being fun. Just tell her that you're not really into OCs and let it go. If she's as good of a gen writer as you seem to think, she probably knows it's a Mary Sue.

118. BOYS. They're made of love!

121. You're absolutely right. They're just books, and it's okay that we all seem to disagree on them. I think the message is horribly, but an aware reader can enjoy the books and ignore the message. Can we please just squee and let squee?

124. I don't think it's possible to get over it.

... I need to get my grubbies on that series again.

132. .......... (headdesk)

You're concerned for your friend. That's brilliant. It really is. But don't you think that approaching it from the point of a fandom is silly, when the real problem is the relationships she's in? Especially when Twilight is the fandom for gods' sakes. You're just repeating what a million other people have said. She's not going to pick out what you're really concerned about unless you tell her.

And calling someone an idiot for their relationship problems is very classy. That'll definitely make her think over your worries in a serious, non-enraged frame of mind.

(headdesks again)

134. ... What the hell is it with friends today? I'm sorry, fandom's wonderful, but to lose respect for someone over a character...

ARGH. I give up. Your friedns are made of fail. You shouldn't have to hide who you fangirl or don't fangirl. I'm going to be under my desk now.

142. Lucky! I get motion sick every time I start a new game (and apparently when I walk around in Archades WTF?) and it's kind of annoying as hell.

145. (facepalming goes here) That is a ridiculous reason to think less of someone. (I suppose you think less of anyone and everyone who has anything to do with pop mags? Brangelina comes to mind.)

148. What is this? Return of the Twilight Secrets?

154. (pets) Probably just like being a Big Name Person, except on a smaller scale. (That is to say, annoying as hell.)

I'll take the Reviewers, hold the wank, and a side-order of interesting conversation to go. Oh, and can I get the fun friendships instead of stalkers? Thanks.

Ah, character-limit, how I hate thee

[identity profile] tsukinofaerii.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
157. Get a mirror and get to know yourself. Familiarity helps bunches. (Especially if you're following everyone else's advice and putting google to good use.) And, as with many things, primping might help too. Shave, wax, trim—whatever you think is right for you. Don't ask me why, but even a tiny bit of effort can do gigantic things for self-esteem, even if that effort goes somewhere that no one else is going really going to see.

... why did I just curse myself with the mental image of a pretty pink bow on pubic hair? (facepalm)

166. Aw. (hugs) You were 11. Badfic happens. You should go back and re-read it just so you can go, "omg I got better!" It's really heartening.

170. Being happy about silly things is the best. <3
