I understand how you feel, too. I gave American Life on Mars a shot and I found it pretty entertaining. I get angry at it every so often (because it had potential but it's a bitch and doesn't even try and look where it ended up?!) but what really makes me angry (and makes me feel bad about myself and doubt that I'm a fan of the British series) is that people would dismiss the American one so easily. (It was good...at some parts.)

Bit rambly, but my point is: you're not the only one who feels that way and you're not the only one upset about it...

119 - OP

Thank you, that's a comfort to hear. You've expressed some of the same things I've been feeling.

I'm not that bothered that some people don't like a show I like, and I'm not about to go around demanding everyone who didn't like it defend their opinion so I can challenge them point for point or whatever, but it's really frustrating when anyone takes a "Well, of course it sucks!" attitude about something.

I'm very miffed by the cancellation. There were characters and plot threads that were developing very differently than in the original and that I really wanted to see explored further.

Again, get over yourself. If you don't like Hallo's art, THEN DON'T LOOK AT IT.

Real simple.

And, no, her fans come in all ages. I'm in my 50's.

Bashing and threatening someone because of her fan art, specially hiding your ID like a coward, only shows you in a bad light.

Hallo, like most of her friends, post what we do, fic and art, out of love of the show. But you seem to have more venom and are only looking for attention, troll.

140. You are so batshit, how can you live with yourself? How dare you dimiss Paul's love for Linda, and John's love for Yoko as some gimmick to justify your insane shipper fantasies? Get a fucking life and grow up, my god. Even if John and Paul were ever involved, they obviously weren't by 1969 and there is NO FUCKING REASON for you to belittle their wives to try to justify that they were. In short, I hate you and I bet they would too. :D

153. Wow, not hot enough together? Shallow much?

Thank you. Maybe a bit tougher on the OP than I'd be able to write, but I can't stand when people ignore John and Paul's devotion to their wives just so they can imagine the guys together. wtf, people?

THIS. Diva is my favourite character in the entire series, and while I do love her craziness, I think she's a pretty tragic character. I mean, all she wanted in the end was a family. She couldn't even get that. :/

114 - I'm with you. It sucks to see, well, things that suck, but you're right in saying that we aren't entitled to anything.

124 - I love genfic myself, but maybe some people think that if they wanted gen, they'd just watch the show (or what have you)?

129 - It's only the crazy obnoxious ones that are so annoying, and you'll find them outside of fandom too. I know where you're coming from, though.

134 - ~*Fandom*~ doesn't need to. But if that kind of thing floats your boat, go ahead, and I hope you find more people who that kind of thing too.

145 - Well, you know, the time travel bit is probably the problem here. Maybe the saved the world bit too.

146 - Oh, buddy, that's never going to happen. There's like, what, gonna be three new episodes?

OP here.

You neeeeeever know. I don't think ANYBODY saw Dr. Who becoming a fandom full of squeeing teenagers. It was for the OLD nerds. The guys who showed up at SCA meetings in Vulcan ears. The guys who knew what the SCA was, for that matter.

150: So your saying you and your friend have sociopathic tendencies? Yes both of them are Sociopaths. I love the series, but unless you can psychologically relate to allowing people to die, torturing, and directly killing people: you or your friend do not have their personalities.

101. Hello, me.

155. There's a difference between canon and popular representations of major pairings. (fanon?)

129, 134

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder if 134 is the same theorist who brought us yesterday's yonic reflections.

129. If fen turned you off "the cause of feminism", then you either never understood feminism in the first place, or you have some hardcore privilege issues.

Seriously, if you've been able to see through the smokescreen and really grasp the inequalities upon which feminist thought is based, and then you shrug it off and give it the finger because you don't like the way one group do their feminism, you were never going to be much use to anybody anyway, were you?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
129) It's kind of dumb to be "turned off" of human rights for women and transgendered folk because most people in fandom happen to be feminists. Who cares?

If you are turned off by rights of women because you don't like uppity feminists in your fandoms or something, then maybe you should try leaving fandom instead? (Hell, you might try leaving the civilized world period...) You can't really make people stop being feminist, feminism has already basically won in so many ways I don't think there is much help for you.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
*I say rights for women+the transgendered, but feminism is also about rights and freedom for men too, especially when it comes to gender roles...

Anyway, I've read a few comments from traditionalists saying "oh feminists are sometimes annoying"--but so are some traditionalists so who cares?

There really is no excuse for trying to oppose human rights, I'm afraid.

134. I commented on other people's responses, but I'll add this: not ~*~everyone~*~ needs to do this, but I certainly wouldn't mind a little more depth and a little less shallowness in fandom in general.

114. I mostly agree with this, aside from the mary-sue insert fanfictions. Here's the reality about those:

1. We all have these fantasies in our heads about being a character in a fandom and interacting with everyone.
2. They are fun to think about.
3. They might even be fun to write about if it helps you enjoy them more.
4. When it comes to these self-insert fantasies, we only are interested in our own.
5. NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO READ or HEAR ABOUT THEM. NO ONE. WE DON'T CARE.
6. They clog up fanfiction.net anyway and ruin otherwise decent fanfictions, because, hey, we want to read about the fandom, not about your OC you inserted in there. You might have a good fanfciton idea and all the other characters might be IC, but your OC is like a cockroach in the middle of the most perfect ice cream sundae.

There, otherwise, fine. I don't think we have a write to judge anyone else based on writing style/ability or drawing a style/ability, aside from the occasional constructive criticism if the maker so desires.

Re: 114

[identity profile] mimes.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I never saw the point in Mary Sues, honestly. If I had fantasies about being in a fandom, I'd rather imagine myself doing it than some character doing it for me. Then I figured that the thought in itself was embarassing (when I was thirteen, I thought I was the only person who did this) so I wouldn't post it. I'm with you there, though, no one is interested in your self-insert fantasies other than the yourself.

Of course, back in those days I wrote a few OCs, but I never made them do what I wanted to do.

103.
Anti-aliasing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-aliasing).

108.
That's cute. Too bad reality is never as cute. Insane deadlines are insane.

114.
There are two extremes to this. To some, fandom is for enjoyment. As long as you enjoy it, you can produce whatever the hell you want, even if it's considered garbage to most people. To others, fandom can be a great opportunity to learn things that you'd never learn in your everyday life.

The thing to keep in mind is to not force your idea of what fandom should be onto other people and accept the fact that some don't look at fandom the way you do. If you're in it just for entertainment, then be prepared that you might be bashed for being shallow, not constructive, or unwilling to improve. Because you're only here to enjoy yourself, you should either not take such comments personally or even whine about being bashed, or, simply not share your work with others at all. If you don't want people to badmouth your work, the only way to shut them up is to not share them in the first place. If you're in fandom to educate yourself and others, don't expect everyone to follow suit. Advice, lessons, deep analysis, lengthy background information are appreciated but it's up to others to decide whether to take them or not.

That said, I prefer a happy medium. I won't change my major for fandom, but I won't use the excuse of fandom being merely a hobby to produce pure crap that never gets any better either. You won't get very far in life if you flat out refuse to learn unless you were forced to.

154.
I'm not sure how you can tell China's absence is deliberately planned by the artist. I'm Chinese but I'm not bothered by it unless every single picture the artist draws includes every characterized country in Hetalia and China never, ever shows up in any of them.

114. Splendidly put.

124. Not just slash but also high profile het pairings. In Eyeshield 21 fandom (a pretty small fandom), a poorly written Hiruma/Mamori fanfiction will get more reviews and attention than a well-written fic about a "lesser" couple. Sometimes I wonder what kind of attention my Bleach stories would get if I wrote about Ichigo and Rukia instead of Aizen and Momo. But I am not going to let popularity influence what I write.
