Thank you. I think that your reasoning is pretty sound too, as fandom feminists, or LJ feminists, or even armchair feminists are just plain frustrating at times - since no, not EVERYTHING is about their cause, and sometimes, yes. A man will be a pig. Just look at House if you want examples.

I have no objection to wanting equal rights for the sexes, I just feel that injecting that into fandom is really pushing it too far, as fandom is really just escapism and not the 'real world.'

Re: 129

Fandom traditionalists are also plain frustrating at times (and worse considering their real life behavior). Sometimes yes, a man will be a pig--I don't think feminists disagree, and sometimes a man will be pretty cool, same thing with women. Our genders don't define who we are, that's the point.

Fandom usually covers media topics and it's pretty important that the media is looked at critically, rather than just swallowing those messages whole. For me, looking critically at these gender double standards in television and movies is pretty refreshing and is just as much "escapism" for me as some 14 year olds' slash crossover fanfic is for her.

I just find him really really annoying and repetitive...and was riveted by this film.

How weird is it that we did the total opposite things?!

The only time I actually tried to read a RPF I ended up cringing every two sentences or so. Not because the story was bad, but because I liked the people involved in it as they were and couldn't really fit them into a setting that had nothing to do with them. I think that if it had been an original story with original characters, I might have actually liked it... and finished it, for that matter.

Re: 129

It's a way of distinguishing between those annoying harpies that keep writing mean stuff about my favourite show, and *real* feminists who actually do stuff that *matters*.

[identity profile] lady-venn.livejournal.com 2009-03-04 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
...I don't like her with either of them, really. I've never felt the need to pair her up with anyone, actually. I just feel that her character does not need to be in a relationship to be whole.

(If forced to pair her with someone, I'd put her with Leoben, actually.)

...I'm also starting to doubt she's going to live to see the end of the series, really.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. At this point I'd actually rather see her be killed off than be paired with any of the men in the series, and that's really sad if you think about it.

104, 120, 147 Oh you RPF converts, you slay me!

109 I will sit back and watch the paranoia on this one.

111 I'm so unsurprised that this community exists, sadly.

114 I think I'm in love with you right now. (Except your choice of pink and blue; for that, I judge you.)

134 Perhaps you should start that conversation.

140 Wow. I didn't realize those weddings were so close together.

153 I don't get why Sam getting shot means that Lee and Kara are more likely to be together; I think they were always on that path. I felt the same as you about Kara and Sam, and in a lot of ways I think he's very good for her, but I stopped really actively shipping them after the revelations of that boxing episode—in so far as I was every really actively shipping them to begin with, because I find shipping, or feeling emotionally connected to the characters, or any other sort of feeling about this show is bound to end in WOE AND PAIN while the rest of the fandom point and laugh at you and dance on your sad, sad grave.

155 I would say the opposite—you have to have a deeper knowledge and love of a canon to ship minor characters. Anyone can love/ship the major characters.

116. Agreed! He was far more interesting/entertaining before he got all whiny about not being the strongest.

129. That makes me sad. All women should support the movement, regardless of whether or not you agree with everyone else. Feminism has always had problems because women are such diverse creatures with a huge range of political and social views that the attempt to throw them all under a single banner has been largely a failure. Women need to work together, not fight over who's right or wrong. In the end we all have similar goals, the problem is getting things done. The last 20 years have been terrible for the feminist cause, and it's time that feminism was no longer a dirty word, because that is exactly how the establishment wants it to remain.

They're making new episodes? Ah *head desk*

I know this is going to perhaps go against your view COMPLETELY, BUT, I though Red Dwarf went down the drain as soon as one of the writers left, Rimmer left and it just gradually got unfunny and then stopped.

I wanted them to end it on a high, but instead there was this really slow drop out and it disappeared altogether. You can see why I'm sorta not interested in the resurrection.

If they do it for some lulz and then finish, then I totally understand and respect that, but if they continue to make a series then it better be good and *in my opinion* have more reliance on the original cast being funny rather than 'oh look the whole ship is back' that ruined the whole premise.

Yeah looooong reply is looooooooong.

112. God I actually had to break out my Lil' Orphan Annie decoder ring to figure out this was a secret about Hello Katzchen and Skwisgar/Toki.

Really, most of the Metalocalypse fandom is a festering cesspool of fail. Especially the Skwisgar/Toki slashers. I don't give a fig about slashing (I do it myself), but it seems like the fact the show is one big joke goes right over most of their heads. I blame the allowance of hormones to wash away common sense. If I have to see one more old lady gushing about how wet a character who is A PARODY OF SPOILED CELEBRITIES AND SUPPOSED TO BE AN UNLIKABLE MORON makes her panties, I'm going to plotz. "He's a selfish asshole with botox lips and a brain the size of a pea but OOOOOH HE HAS ABS! Substance? Who needs THAT to like someone?"

Re: 112

(Anonymous) 2009-03-04 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, but wait...since when does getting one's jollies require substance?

I don't ever slash a series I wouldn't like even *without* the slash. I'm a S/T shipper, and I'll be the first one to admit that, canonically, every single character on that show is really a terrible person, and that's HILARIOUS. Yeah, I write/draw SRS BZNS stuff, but I like to view it as sort of an alternate stream to my very basic love of the show. It's clever, it's funny, it's offensive as hell, and I want to have Brendon Small's babies. And even if there was absolutely nothing slashworthy in it, that wouldn't change.

It's not one or the other...srs bzns vs. lulz. There's a happy medium...but to your credit, I understand where you're coming from. There aren't many of us who have *found* that happy medium, but we are out there.

I'd laugh, but I have some equally ridiculous things on my MGS-fanfic-writing playlist. I swear by Truce by the Dresden Dolls for my OTP (ss/gf obv)...but also River by Joni Mitchell sometimes, and even Childe The Hunter by Seth Lakeman (that chorus >< )... BB, and I won't pretend there is any dignity in this, I go with the live version of Tool's Third Eye. :P I don't even know the tune you mentioned, but WTF COLDPLAY? NO I CAN GO LOWER THAN THAT I BET YOU.

I kinda can't believe I'm posting this comment, but hell, headcanon soundtrack is headcanon soundtrack. Release by the Afro Celt Sound System for The Joy. The Great Unknown by Dar Williams for Hal. Fox, in my head, mostly listens to classical music but a doujin artist pegged him to Mr Self Destruct by NIN and now that's on my playlist too. And of course, Space Oddity and Ashes To Ashes by David Bowie, because it's fucking canon.
