120. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
140. As much I'd like to say that you're completely crazy, I can't 'cause I feel like that's a perfectly feasible theory.

# 129

[identity profile] slytherincesss.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I kind of agree with this. I think that oftentimes people forget that feminism is based in the idea of choice for women. And choice means just that: CHOICE. To me, it means that a woman chooses her path, whether that includes being a mother or a professional or both. It seems that I so often read "feminst" comments that degrade a fic or canon source for featuring a woman who is married (i.e. Molly Weasley in HP), has children, and possibly stays at home to care for her children. There is nothing wrong with mothering one's children. Conversely, there is nothing wrong with being a working mother. I object to the idea that a female character must be, essentially, stereotypically masculine in order to have value.

OP, dunno if this was your point or not. But it struck a chord with me. I'm not sure if all "fandom feminists" really understand the meaning of feminism or the origins of the movement.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
While I agree that there is nothing wrong with mothering and being a stay at home mother (something a lot of feminist literature praises), I will say this about choice: if we are socialized to think only one, or few, avenues are appropriate for we women, then we really don't have much of a choice. In order to be a true choice, a woman needs other, viable--socially acceptable--options. Of course in a lot of Western cultures, there is a lot of diversity in what is acceptable for women. However, there are pockets in our societies that have very traditional and limiting expectations and roles for women.

Yeah, but would you hit OG!Reno?

please don't be one of those Compilation noobs who's never played the OG and thinks summaries and secondhand info are good enough to get by and makes the rest of us Compilation noobs look bad.

138 OP

Please don't be one of those elitists that thinks I had to have had the game back when it was new to have an opinion. I wasn't allowed to have it; my parents wouldn't allow a video game system in our house until well after I was in high school; that's not my fault, and doesn't make my opinion any less valid.

124. I feel the exact same way. :/ I actually wrote a half-assed slash fic as an experiment in a fandom which I'd written several gen fics that were pretty much ignored, and big surprise, the slash fic not only got about twenty more reviews than my previous stories, but was recced several places. I was like, really? Ugh, ha. Anyway. Let's be whiny bitches together!

Oh god, I don't feel so alone in my habits anymore.
Thanks so much, OP. D:

154. Maybe I’m just in the right comms but this fandom is by far the best one I’m involved with. Maybe that’ll change after the flick comes out but for now they’re just amazing.

(Anonymous) 2009-03-05 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
140. Oh yeah, because they screamed "I love you and want to be with you" so clearly. -___- Go to Beatlesecrets, ugh. I left that place to get away from that stuff. Most people who claim to think they were a couple haven't seen the Anthology, gone through hundreds of interviews, read about the way they treated each other, listened to anything they did during their solo years, etc... but CLEARLY they were SO IN LOVE OMFG.

The comic book elitists scare me, which is why I'm staying 50 feet away from the fandom.

[identity profile] antler-action.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
129. Funny, it was "fandom feminists" who made me realize how very necessary it was to keep a feminist perspective in all parts of your life, not just your "real life". Feminism in its purest form is about equality for every human being, and as far as I'm concerned that's an inarguable good. If you can be turned away from something so fundamental to humanity by the annoying or inconsistent behavior of some of its followers, then I honestly feel sorry for you.

[identity profile] resounding-echo.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
w very necessary it was to keep a feminist perspective in all parts of your life, not just your "real life".

Yes, thank you. It's not just something for academia or the courtroom, but in ever facet of our lives. I hate this idea that to "overthink" fandom is to suck the fun out of it; of course fandom and media are important--we wouldn't invest so much and participate so much if they weren't. It shapes and reinforces how we think and act.

156

(Anonymous) 2009-03-05 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Don't be silly. James's nose isn't nearly snubby enough, and his cheekbones are much too prominent.

[identity profile] shampoo.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
105. ME TOO, OP. ME. FREAKING. TOO.
114. ok so i agree with the first one but uh, sorry, i don't think that just because the internet is a place for people to be free to post whatever the fuck they want means the world has to be NICE to them.
124. it's not JUST SLASH in my opinion. writing het gets you plenty of reviews too. fandom is relationship-driven which will uh ALWAYS BE INEVITABLE unfortunately.
127. ohgod i totally misread this secret but rereading it fskjdfhs ♥ DANNY IN GLASSES IS SO. CUTE.
141. EVEN IF IT HAD SOME UH weird kind of connotations like interspecies love THIS MOVIE WAS REALLY SWEET. ♥
143. brian/justin will forever be one of the most beautiful relationships on tv to me. /nostalgia

n!s1. uh. i'd agree in the case of idk, men who crossdress for personal pleasure/lifestyle interests, but using calpernia, who uh DIDN'T IDENTIFY AS MALE, is kind of ruining your point. calpernia was transgendered, not a transvestite.

[identity profile] aceles.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
147. I'm not afraid to say that bandom has brought me the smartest, funniest, most frightening, most heart wrenching fics I've ever read. They rival the published authors I love.

Bandom: Bringing me high-quality fic, one day at a time.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
114: Exactly. I would add it's not anyone's place to tell anyone else what they should like or to push the reasons not to like it.

129: I wouldn't say it's turned me off feminism; I think feminism's more a way of life than anything, you just incorporate it into your everyday attitude and work. But I can see how fandom feminists might have that effect. I certainly don't share many of the same stated values and goals as the declared fandom feminists I've dealt with. I find most confident feminists online and in real life conduct themselves as people who happen to be female, not as women demanding to be treated specially for having XX chromosomes. In fact, the sensible feminists I know want to be afforded the same rights and treatment as men: judged on competence and ability, able to make their own medical decisions (when's the last time a court ruled on whether a man could have his testicles altered, and when's the last time doctors refused to do it?), paid a certain amount for certain work.

144 & 145: *fannish love squee HEARTS foxes and MJF* Sorry, that was all over your screen. :-)

[identity profile] blackheart-dove.livejournal.com 2009-03-05 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
116- I think you must've missed the depth on his character... I guess in a way he enjoyed himself more when he DENIED his feelings to himself and lived only for revenge. But spiritual growth is hardly ever easy or fun. :/

I'm right there with you! I felt sorry for her the entire time, though I frowned when she beat up Solomon :/

114

(Anonymous) 2009-03-05 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
114: I feel ya. I think there's a pretty clear line between constructive criticism from someone who wants to help for improvement's sake, and just plain catty nastiness from someone with an internet superiority complex.

This is just fandom. But that's why people are so judgmental. It's easy to be an elitist when you're behind a computer screen. But I'd love to see how these people who are so quick to bash from behind a monitor function in the real world, where being considered a better fanfic writer, better fan artist, etc. doesn't matter.

129. Fandom feminists are the worst. I swear, so many of them are pushy and rude, and then assholes when you don't agree.

144. Aww Robin Hood! That is such a sweet movie ^^

I was going to stay out of it, but really... I just have to say the majority of Metalocalypse fandom never fails to disappoint with your petty bullshit. Seriously, with all the rank shit in that fandom, you can't find someone to wank over other than Hallo? REALLY? Christ, y'all are fucking five years old, I swear.
