It's the mod on that place who creeps me out - I'm not on that comm enough to know what the actual members are like, but anyone who feels the need to name a place for het fic a 'haven' (SAVE ME FROM TEH INSEPIENT GAAAAAYZ) is... um... creepy. Plus, she refused to affiliate with a slash comm - even though it was for a rarepair, which is what she supposedly created the comm for (seen as het is so rare). Again - creepy. And I ship pretty much ALL the het pairings and DON'T particularly ship Arthur/Merlin. Maybe not intentionally homophobic but certainly giving off a vibe, you know what I mean? Ick.

That was my initial reaction when the comm first appeared -- I've seen the "only sane het fans in a predominantly slash fandom" persecution complex before, and it's NEVER pretty.

It's not a slash thing, it's a romance thing. Het gets rather more comments than gen too. Many (most?) fans get the gen they want from the actual canon, but it's rarer that they get enough of the character interaction/relationships they want in canon. So when they look for fanfic, the itch they want to scratch the most is for more stuff with the characters and ships they love.

129 - I have to wonder how really turned onto feminism you were before. I mean, really, if you were into it, and spent a lot of time examining things with a feminist lens, paying attention to both the world and the media, I have a hard time believing that you'd be so impatient with people who bring their feminism to fandom.

On the other hand, if you weren't really into feminism to start with, it gives you a pretty good excuse, doesn't it?

They could have both been the other with just a little twist of chance. Or they both could have been evil. It's really depressing how many people are chiming in to agree with this :/ I would never deny that feminism as a movement has and has had in the past many flaws (some of them a lot more serious and unforgivable than people interpreting media texts in ways that other people don't like), but the idea that you could be turned away from its cause because of them is not something that makes me happy.

As a researcher working partly in fan studies, I actually completely agree with you that academic approaches to fandom are far too heavily biased towards sociological and cultural studies approaches and don't pay enough attention to the (imo more interesting) issues you're talking about, and have in fact designed my own thesis in response to that. To suggest that Everyone In All Of Fandom "needs" to care about these things, though...do not agree so much.
