111. I stopped watching Lost a while ago (I was fed up with them piling mysteries on mysteries and just dropping old plot threads instead of resolving anything), but... yeah, it always had sf/f elements to it; I can't see how anyone wouldn't realize that after an episode or two.

126. The "rape = love" trope isn't limited to the Japanese or to lesbians. Otherwise, I haven't seen Mai-HiME, but I agree with your general point.

My roomie and my other friend would kill someone if they saw this. My friend and roomie went to go see this over Valentine;s Day weekend. My friend has seen the musical three times, and they met John Tartaglia and she made him puppetts once, becuase he puppetts, and this past time she made him a scarf and she loved it. And she wrote him a fan letter a couple weeks ago, looked in her mailbox this morning, and there was a handwritten letter from him!

167. Seriously? I mean, I totally get being put off by certain words, but that seems a bit extreme. What words are you okay with? Of your list, I'm fine with dick, pussy and hole (although I mostly see 'hole' in my slash as a euphemism for asshole - I'm not sure how I'd feel about it as a word for vagina), and 'prick' and 'knob' in certain contexts if I think it's in character for the characters to think those words.

Off the top of my head the only words I can think of that have been so un-sexy to me I couldn't enjoy the porn they were in have been 'penis' (it just seems way too clinical. It was actually kind of in-character for the character in question, but it did mean I had to read the porn as a pure character study rather than for any visceral enjoyment), 'box' for vagina (that was mostly a What? moment because I hadn't heard that slang before, and it seems like such a weird term for it) and 'boy-button' for prostate (No. Just no).

(Out of curiosity, what are your feelings on 'cock'? Because I really don't see 'dick' as much different, but 'cock' does seem more popular, and you didn't mention disliking it.)

105. They are one of the most boring races in the Star Trek universe. Especially when you compare them to the more complex ones like Cardassians. Klingons are too black and white. If they tell you they like you, they actually like you. If they tell you that they will put your head on a spike the next chance they can get, you'd better go into the witness protection program. However, with a race like Cardassians, they will tell you that they like you. Offer you a glass of wine. And while you are drinking it, they will tell you that they have poisoned it. Though they still like you. This is just business.

How can you even compete?

111. Agree with you 100%. I would love to crawl into these complainers' heads and see through their own eyes. Because their show is obviously a different show from mine. I wonder what other shows they see different from the rest of the world?

143. My money is on Garth.

True that. The race also has claim to one of the best characters in all of trek. They're one of the most complicated and fleshed out races too and more interesting than the Klingons.

I like 'em both though.

You know what? Everyone has their own comfort zones with this stuff. I respect that you don't like it. But seriously, a "better" word? Everyone has different ideas for what makes a word good.

Personally, I'll pick whatever word I think my POV character would use. Based on my personal experience, this normally leads to male characters thinking of the relevant anatomy as "cock" or sometimes "dick," because honestly I don't think I've ever met a guy who didn't default to one of those most of the time. Girlbits are more confusing, because there's not as strong a consensus for words, so it takes a bit more thought.

That's not a right answer. Many people who I see commenting prefer to use a term that fits the mood of the scene rather than the vocabulary of the POV character, and that's also fine.

You... I don't know what you like, OP, and I'm a bit curious. But honestly, I don't think I'll be changing my ways because you find some words distasteful.

Re: 167

[identity profile] skymeetssea.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well said. I fully respect someone's right to be put off by the language used in a piece of writing, but telling people to 'find a better word' implies a value judgment. For people with dirty talk kinks (or people writing characters who would use such words as part of their characterization, or people writing characters with dirty talk kinks, etc), sometimes these words are entirely appropriate.

Frankly, I think KnM would have been a better example for this trope, since I'm pretty sure Shizuru didn't rape Natsuki (I'm always intrigued by a good exploration of this idea in fic however, altho good is few and far between.) but I get the sentiment.

However, ShizNat still have far from an idealised relationship and I'm kind of disturbed at the idea of anyone saying they and their significant other are just like them and being happy about that.

I think lot of people watch MH and then go off and read the fic and the image they have in their head of their relationship is infinitely fluffier and miles away from what really happens between them in the show a lot.

You're sound like an idiot. When something is wrong with the world you don't just go "oh well" and accept it. You try to change things for the better for the people who come after you. Women shouldn't have to put with ANY sexism even if it's written by Joss Whedon.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a lot of Whedon hate today.

107. IA.

111. Don't forget random polar bears on a tropical island! I don't understand anyone's logic that they wouldn't watch a show or would stop watching because it's SF/F. Way to alienate oneself from an entire awesome genre.

167. I think someone needs to publish a thesaurus just for erotica and naughty bits. The world can seriously benefit from this resource.

111 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-03-18 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol yes, I left that one out because apparently it has a logic explanation, like the bears being there for the Dharma Initiative experiments? But why polar bears in the first place? Right, that's another mystery ^^;;

I can *get* not liking sf/f (myself I don't like branches of it), I just think that those realizing that Lost belongs to that genre after *five seasons* have maybe been missing the point.

It was the climax of a week-long riff between Daily Show and the financial fucktards at CNBC. Jon had rightly pointed out what tools the CNBC talking heads were, CNBC & the whole NBC show machine circled the wagons, Cramer (to give him props) came onto the show, and Jon just obliterated him in the nicest way I've ever seen. Go to Huffingtonpost.com and search "jon stewart" They have all the videos.

111. I still do not get the attraction to Lost. It's been whack since episode one.
144. Me too! I swear, that would be the best ship ever.
150. I still watch SpongeBob :) And Kim Possible was like, the best show ever. Lizzie McGuire was second best.
154. Hahahhahah, i LOVED that skit. So freaking epic. Not quite as good as "The Czech Brothers" but definitely forgettable :D

111 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-03-18 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a problem with those who don't like Lost period, I am puzzled by ex fans who woke up after five seasons to realize that it was heavy on the wacky science fiction side. While it's always been there, love it or leave it.

Re: 167

[identity profile] faith-harris.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...Except people often make the choice to use those words. I for one, get pulled out of sex scene real quickly if someone gets really creative with their words when it comes to sexual organs. Or, alternatively, if they get really shy about words 'he entered her sex'.

How does a word choice, a word choice that people commonly make in real life, sound lazy?

Please to not be acting like your personal opinion on this subject is fact.

These words are not offputting to everyone. And sometimes they are the proper words to put in the characters' mouths. I personally don't like the words "dick" or "cunt," but I will use them if I think they fit the characters I'm writing.

It looks like all you've left us with is "penis" and "vagina," which are, to me (see how that works? it's an opinion, not a fact) pretty much the least sexy words in the English language.
