I completely understand.

I was involved in fandom several years ago when I had a mental breakdown. I was diagnosed with clinical depression and a severe anxiety disorder. I couldn't consciously leave my fandom and concentrate on getting better because I felt like fandom was all I had keeping me sane(ish), but I subconsciously and systematically destroyed most, if not all, of the relationships I had with my fellow fans. (Not to mention my IRL relationships.)

Six years later, I'm nowhere near being 'better,' but I have gotten to the point where I can have semi-functional relationships with other people. But I haven't been able to get back into fandom at all. I read fanfic and look at fan art, but most of the time I can't even comment. I think it's because I'm still subconsciously terrified that I will ruin any friendships I may have, and fandom is still important to me.

So basically (TL;DR?), I can't say it gets easier to get back into fandom, nor can I say that depression is easy to overcome, but I hope that you can be happy. You can feel free to send me a message if you want. I'm also a Harry Potter fan, if you want to talk about HP, I'm game XP

<3 I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. It baffles me sometimes when people say that they don't like to comment or are afraid of it, but that's probably just because I have such a different perspective on it.

There are so many fics and drabbles and things in so many fandoms that go nearly and literally unnoticed. I think it's great to boost the writer/drawer of a piece with a little comment. As long as your polite and/or plaful, I don't think it'll ever ruin any relationship. In fact, if you really like someone's work, but don't get many reviews for their work or anything, if you're a frequent reviewer, they'll definitely notice you and you might start up a friendship with them. :D

I hope you can let yourself relax enough to enjoy and get back into the fandom. It makes me sad when people don't let themselves -be- themselves on the internet or -do- the things they want to do.

I sometimes get typecast as a guy online. I don't do it to "belittle" anyone or to be "cool" or anything like that; it just happens because apparently I type masculine.

The internet is a place where people can be what they want to be. That's why people like it so much. Anyone can be anything. That's what's cool about it. Seriously, if you're transgender, you should know how it feels to have people mock you and hate you for choosing to do something for reasons they don't understand. Way to be a hypocrite - mocking and hating other people for "belittling" something which is OMG JUST FOR YOU. OMG! I never realised! Thank you, OP, for bringing the light into my life. I mean, you're right. I shouldn't be pretending to be a guy online - I'm causing other people actual anguish because of I didn't have deep serious reasons for playacting as a guy! I feel terribly ashamed of myself. After all, what right do I have to dictate how I'm going to present my own gender to the world? I mean, it's not like it's MY CHOICE to present myself as I so wish it - I should think about the rest of the world! What about those poor, innocent transgendered boys who I'm deeply injuring by choosing to portray myself as a gender other than the one I was born with for reasons of my own choosing (which would be okay if I had SRS BIZNIZ reasons approved of by OP, of course, but as I don't, I'm an evil, stupid person).

You're right, OP. Your judgment about what my gender is, what my reasoning is, what I am and am not allowed to do with portraying myself, indeed what my gender categorization is - your view on all that is FAR more important than my own. I should just bow to society pressures and continue to be nice and girly because clearly that's what I am, despite my desire to portray myself as different. Because after all, not making other people feel "sick" when regarding me is MUCH more important than my own desires on the matter.

I am always thrown out of fics where big burly manly-man types who are very crude in the rest of their speech suddenly start using medical terms or the euphemisms that squeamish girls usually use.

Bonus points for using terms that are historically inappropriate for the character/period.

Your character should not sound like you in a sex scene unless they sound like you all the time.
