127: FUCK YEAH SHIKI/ERI! If I ever get involved in that fandom beyond just liking the games, that's what I'll be writing.

136: I don't think you missed the point at all. Patrick Bateman is astonishingly, terminally, stultifying boring, and he's meant to be - it's a major part of his character that there is no depth, no spontaneity, no "soul" to him. He is nothing more or less than the image he constructs for himself out of meaningless, shallow, empty signifiers and cultural discourses, and his poisonous aberrant psychology. That's what makes him the satire on loss of self, brand and image-conscious culture, and social sickness that he is. Also, I'd say desensitisation to the violence is exactly the effect the book is going for, given what a major part of it it is that people and the society around Bateman just will not see or judge what he's doing. So speaking as someone who loves the book, I'd say you have it spot on :)

119 -maker of caprion_anon

(Anonymous) 2009-03-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The fandom handled things in a less butthurt manner than I thought. Other than the personal attacks. Valid criticism is not saying someone is witting kid fic because they were molested, or saying that someone can't write because they are a dyke.

All those that were given true criticisms handled it better than I thought.

Cry moar and get over yourself. Fandom has been bending over backwards to try and make those upset happy. Either speak up on the community or shut up and get out.

Fun fact: I know the IPs of half the anons. Most them were the same person.

Re: 119 -maker of caprion_anon

[identity profile] stormseye.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, look at the recent posts. People are complaining about the characterization? They are putting together character sheets. Other people have done it. There is a wiki for anyone to add to. If you have issues with the way people are writing, make a discussion post on it or make one in your journal and link it, as I have seen several other do.

If you don't like kid fic, don't read it, or mpreg or whatever. They are clearly labeled most of the time. I know what I don't want to read, so I don't, it's that easy. Bad fanart is fleeting, don't like it? It won't ruin your day if you spot it, just close the page.

I know what authors I like, and I know the ones I don't even look at. I don't demand they stop posting though.

The fandom is going through a dry spot because many of the really good authors are working on their Big Bang. There are bursts in quantity and quality depending, like after Secret Invasion there was a huge boom of angst, then of fluff to combat it. If you don't like the fic now, then wait or leave and come back.

If its mostly one person doing this, I hope they make their peace with the fandom and either leave for good or do something constructive, not calling people out in personal, anonymous, attacks.

To be fair,

I have to agree with the person who said most of these secrets are fake. No way do I believe that more than one person has a secret about Becky from Tail Spin. And isn't it suspicious that that overrated borderline hack Joss Whedon has multiple secrets about how he's not all that two or three days in a row?

(Anonymous) 2009-03-18 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really care about Tail Spin, but isn't it possible one person thought she was attractive, which reminded another person that they'd thought some naughty things about the character, too? I've thought of secrets to make after seeing characters/fandoms I like in other people's secrets, and it wasn't that the secrets weren't real, it was that it's just difficult to remember every opinon you have about every obscure fandom all the time.

Maybe they're fake. I dunno.

[identity profile] georg-vanlunden.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
113. It is one damn uplifting theme. I don't even remember watching any Superman movies as a kid, and I still love his theme. It's just so grand. So epic, just like the Man of Steel himself, like how Batman (the Tim Burton that is) has a theme that just IS mystery, strangeness and dark but at the same time bold and majestic... what can I say: they both got wonderful themes.

114. I had no idea what this anime was before I saw this secret, but damn if I don't want to see it now. What can I say, I liek quirky.

115. Who be she?

118. Well. He does have a very stylish sense of dress.

But yes, it's still a very very very bad sign.

124. Agreed. I think you should like the characters because you feel a connection to them on some personal level... not because the great majority ignores them and you want to be edgy.

127. Indeed. Look at how they treat Matt. Now aren't we glad there is no such completely unwarranted and insane love in this fandom? I know I am. Seriously though, I guess that Shiki and Eri are as plausible in the long run as Joshua and Neku if you want to be generous. But the majority of the fans will either be het or yaoi-fans, so that's the kind of art and fic you'l get. Reality's just harsh that way, but that too we must come to terms with in order to understand and appreciate the world around us.

Man I can't see a TWEWY-secret without rambling. TL:DR Majority of fans don't like yuri enough to care, sad but true. Also obligatory comment on how much I dislike pairing Joshua with anyone who isn't Hanekoma. Because Joshua is a douche and Hanekoma would put him in his place.

Such a fucking douche.

132. Overused and abused in comic books and mindlessly loved by everyone who doesn't vomit at the mere sight of him? :)

144. Oh hell yes. If there is at least not some allusions that they have made out at one point, I will scowl disapprovingly. "I ain't quittin' you". Just... wow.

147. You can't really say anything with absolute certainty when it comes to these things, because everyone behaves differently and needs different things... but I think that if being in fandom made you feel good, try getting in again. We can find support and strength in the strangest things some times.

155... I do not remember this episode. Someone tell me what happens in it, please.

159. There are ninjas in this game? I haven't gotten that far yet, but if there is a possible ninja/samurai romance (It's like Romeo and Juliet but with swords and honor and killing yourself with swords for honor!) I must play on.

167. Another word to add to the "don't use" list would be "lady-softness". [livejournal.com profile] heebee, I blame you for that one.

Ohmygod what.

Why is this a secret?

[livejournal.com profile] house_wilson

It's only the most popular House ship.
ext_2260: It's a side profile image of Dean Winchester rotated face down 45 degrees, almost black and white and dark with angst. (HMD House turn-fade)

102) I've never seen anything from Joss Whedon but just because “the world” is sexist doesn't mean everyone has to be, none of my friends are sexist. It's a poor excuse, imho.

124) Hell yea.

135) :I Welp.

152) Haw haw don't look for “strong female characters” in harem animes wtf? It's all just fanboy wish fulfillment, though I never understood why slapstick-violent female love interests (and dweeby-ass male leads) are so popular in anime. I think it's whats stopping me from getting into anime in general, for every good show there are 5 more that are crap.

164) Mmm, it's not so much they want to look cool they just want to get hit on by other girls. Some guys do the same thing in male-dominated forums. I'm not sure what that has to do with your struggle as a transsexual, can you elaborate? Is this also true of crossdressers who sometimes pretend to be the other gender irl, but don't actually identify as the other gender? Do you consider them belittling too? Honest question since while I don't pretend to be a guy online I do crossdress...trans issues are so overlooked in our society I'm curious as to your perspective.

152

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-03-18 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Why not? Fanboys can wish to be surrounded by decently written women as well, no?

Also, for every good ANYTHING there are 5 more that are crap. There's plenty of good stuff to occupy your time with.

I think it's unfair to assume that they're all doing it for attention. If they admit so, fine. They're cunts. But if you just happen to find out? They may just be trying something out somewhere 'safe' online.

God knows when I first got online at age eleven I became a boy to everyone I spoke to so long as I was at the computer. It was nice. It was a great escape into a place where nobody could see anything but how I behaved. It made it easier to just roll with it and let people call me 'he' in real life if they were so inclined.

I'm not saying that nobody does it for attention, but I would like to say that a few of them may be trying to find somewhere they can just act out who they want to be.

I dunno. This has made me feel all wistful.

I didn't like the focus on Japanese culture in that secret either, so when I responded I was general about being disturbed by the general fetishization of that sort of thing. It happens in our culture too, and probably a lot of others if not most.

102 - I'm still watching Dollhouse, but it's kind of... bad. Vaguely interesting, but with too many things wrong for it to me to consider it even 'okay'.

105 - I agree. I liked Worf, but I almost always find myself boredboredbored in any Klingon episodes (not involving Kirk). I'm much more interested in the Romulans, personally.

129 - I don't know that it's because she died that the fanart got better. I think it's that more people started to like her, because you actually got some genuinely emotionally charged and wonderful scenes, instead of a romance that was "normal", but because of that, kind of uninteresting.

133 - Fandom =/= doing things in the LBBTQ scene. They're totally separate. Would you find it strange that someone who only ships het would be into the scene? Would you think it's better, because they aren't fetishizing the gay men who they're saying they support? Fandom is a fun playground, and while realism is nice, at the end of the day it's about fantasy and wish fulfillment. You can do one and still believe in the other. Personally, I see nothing wrong with that.

167 - I actually find using really filthy language like that as super hot, actually. Nasty = hot, to me.

118. More Trilby secrets? Tomorrow are we going to get one about Trilby/Tall Man.
130. Aren't they dating in real life? Or at least the original two that inspired Bri?

What no whining about 119? No begging people to validate your writing? I bet dorcas_gustine secretly hated the OOC crap you wrote for her birthday with your pet mod.

Aw, I stopped watching that show years before it actually ended, but I miss it, too! Danny-whumping was far more fun than it should have been.

I understand where you're coming from, but... it's not always just to look cool. It seems to me like more of a transvestite thing- they like the idea of presenting as and being seen as male, although they identify as female (although maybe not all of them are- possibly some really do feel more like themselves in a male identity, and this is their way of experimenting with it? There ARE transmen who like yaoi.) Is cross-dressing/ presenting as the opposite sex something that bothers you when people do it IRL, too?

I get why a person who had to convince people his whole life that yes, he's a guy, would be bothered that people are pretending to be the opposite sex just to get attention. But it's not belittling your struggle for a girl to act out her fantasy online of being a guy-- and who knows, maybe she actually isn't a girl, and doesn't have anywhere apart from the internet to interact with people as a boy.

I had that point in mind earlier, but couldn't figure out how to word it. Thanks for tossing it into the ring, so to speak.

...it's the same way for me, but I've never had any particularly powerful religious experiences to begin with, so I'm not sure it counts as much.

102. Just because something isn't indescribably awful doesn't mean I have to like it. And just because something bad is a fact of life doesn't mean people shouldn't work to change it. Note that I'm not into Whedon or Dollhouse - it's just that your argument sucks.

120. No, I know what you mean; all my secrets so far have been pretty positive/neutral, but if I made a controversial one I would be tempted not to look either, especially if it were sensitive.

123. Oh my god, are you me? I was so obsessed with Brightvale. No shame!

156. ...really?

160. I have never heard of this band, but you sound like you have anger management issues (don'tpunchmeplz).

...You know, I almost made a secret almost exactly like this once. Because I hate it, too, when BL fangirls go, "character X makes me wish I were a man!" or something. It makes me want to shake them and yell that they have no idea what it's actually like to have a female body and desperately wish that weren't the case. And there's no way to really say that without a) being told that I'm a dick or b) being told that I'm not actually transgendered, I just want the gay man like they do (which makes me want to ask what gives them the right to decide what I am, but that's another issue entirely). I mean, if you're gender-variant, questioning, whatever, that's different, but if you have a crush on the character or want the fangirls to flock you? Not cool.

...Anyway, yeah, you're not alone. Not in the slightest.

But what if they're only saying it in a dramatic manner because they don't know how else to explain that they're really not certain anymore? Yeah, it sucks when people really don't get what it feels like, but that's sadly always how it's going to be unless we can find a way to stick people's minds in the wrong body to give them a little hands-on tolerance lesson. Sometimes, character crushes lead to the questioning that you say you're okay with.

I've never got the "you're not actually trans" line before, nor will I ever understand people wanting to be flocked by fangirls, but I just can't wrap my head around people flailing over this. Maybe it's because I've never seen it for myself, maybe it's because I'm fine with almost any sort of online persona contrasting with reality as long as nothing illegal is being done. I don't know.
