153. Oh thank you so much. I ship Rose/Doctor, love Rose, really like Martha and adore Donna. I was so happy that liked all of them and then I first looked into fandom and all the hate made me really not want to join it.

120. Oh my God, THIS. I've been seeing these types of secrets quite a bit lately. This community normally gets those at least once every couple of weeks, bt it seemed to become more prevalent now. It's like you said, OP. People need to stop using F!S as their personal Anon Sheriff badge. I don't mind people expressing personal problems here, but some of the secrets like that have a "AH'M CALLIN' YOU OUT, BETCH" tone to them.

123. As mush as I hate bandwagoning trendwhores...you really gotta get a grip, OP. People shift fandoms and interests ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Obviously there's going to be the trend-followers, but sometimes people leave out of lack of interest. I love Batman comics and cartoons (and the Nolan movies), but Watchmen is hot in discussion right now, so it's easier to socialize it comms related to Watchmen because of that. I don't like the overusage of "Why so serious?"...but,...WHY SO SERIOUS? God damn.

127. Awwww. ;_; You know, I normally don't answer fangirl secrets, but the way you connected with a character through bad childhoods touched me a bit. On a side note, I've been looking for children's rights/anti-abuse groups to join up with because of the same character and better yet, people and fictional characters that have had similar problems. It sounds silly, but abuse towards children is an issue I feel strongly about.

PS, OP: Your grandma is awesome. I love "grandparent saves kid from shitty parent" stories.

128. I love TB&tB. Some grimdark Batfans normally don't take to campy Batman stuff too well, so that may explain a little. But there are plenty of Batman/DC fans that like both grimdark and light-hearted stuff, so you can try starting a comm for the show if you want. There's likely more fans than you think. ;)

145. It's okay, OP. Just go see the movie and pick up the comic if you end up liking it. You might understand it a little better if you do the latter first, but it's still a pretty enjoyable movie; it just requires you to pay attention a little.

162. That's what e-hyperbole does. Just look at the backlash on Heath Joker. It's a shame. I really loved his performance and he sounds like a really nice guy IRL. He seems like a happy elf that loves everyone. Kind of like Jesus.

101. I don't know what school that is, but I would say in any given school there's probably someone who shares your interests. It's not always easy to find them, but they're there if you look.

157. Okay, I'm not personally into D/s stuff, but patronizing sexism plus Your Kink Is Not Okay? You, sir, fail.

158. Is that Night On Bald Mountain from Fantasia? See, I'm not sure, because I've never watched it all the way through either.

123: Is...is it true? Really? Are we really going to stop having to wade through a sea of shitty self-insert Joker/OC fics to get to anything remotely readable?
...I'd probably be more excited about this if I wasn't also in the Watchmen fandom *facepalm*

I liked the idea and her character but thought the execution of her "madness" was too cartoony, over-the-top and rushed for her to be truly sympathetic. I was laughing hard during the "BAAAAW IMMA THROWIN' FIRE FROM MAH MOUTH" scenes.

Don't mind this comment. I just realized I'm not Avatar's target audience and they had to make it clear to everyone the reasons she was having a breakdown. Subtle direction and setting a mood through atmosphere are not priorities for action cartoons.

158. Ah, more Disney-inspired terror (if that's Night on Bald Mountain like I think it is). I don't think I ever saw the whole thing.

159. Nothing odd about liking (and/or shipping) characters you're not attracted to.

N!S1. The way I see it, Adrian is more attractive regarding the general standards of attractiveness...and Rorschach, well, he sorta has a completely different kind of appeal. (Of course, this comment is regarding shallow, outward appearance only.)

DIW. So basically, she's someone who's completely overrated at wherever she's known from, but is completely unknown everywhere else?

126. Oh, I hope didn't stumble upon a certain DA thread from about three years ago...

127. Your grandmother sounds like a great person.

130. *blinks* Umm...interesting?

145. Watch it! See if you like it, that doesn't necessarily mean you HAVE to join the fandom, unless you want to. (Then again, I'm speaking as someone who's wondering if she could be considered a "bandwagon" fan, and has seen several corners of the fandom that she wants to avoid...but that shouldn't stop you from simply watching. And hopefully, find the nicer parts of the fandom.)

149. I'm trying to figure this out. Explain, please?

158. That guy is awesome. Creepy, but awesome. Always thought so, and always will.

101) College I'm guessing. It can be lonely being on your own, I won't kid you on that one. Especially if you are shy. But if you can push yourself to be proactive and look for say an anime club or a book club or some other interest, you can find some good friends. They won't fall in your lap, you really do have to man up and take the initiative. It's totally worth the reward.

103) You've lived a very sheltered life.

106) So, basically the only thing you can contribute to your fandoms is to be a wet blanket and to harsh peoples squee. Why would you consider that to be a service? What possible good do you see coming out of this? I see how it might be frustrating to want to participate, to be seen and acknowledged, but have no idea how to do so constructively (being the fandom police is not constructive -- it's self-righteous and attention whoring behavior), but it would be better if you lurked and kept your thoughts to yourself, and stopped to observe how other people behave so you can learn basic fandom ettiquette.

120) Aw, but I get irrational pleasure out of tearing those secrets to bits. Spreading misery, all in a good day.

121) Damn I miss playing GURPS with my friends.

139) He seems constantly confused to me, like he thinks he should know what he's doing, but he finds to his surprise he really doesn't, and it's not a happy feeling for him. All of which makes me want to comfort him and lead him astray. Actually, I don't want to do that myself, I'd rather have "God" do that. By which I mean, I want me some God/Castiel porn. Does that even count as blasphamy in this fandom?

152) It's absolutely okay to be porned out. We all get sated with things after a while.

157) Well, honestly, in most of the world and through most of history women were/are required to be submissive. Even in the United States, I've had a date pull the "you do what I tell you" schtick with me (naturally no second date happened) so it's a scary confusing issue that always sits in the back of your head. There's both terror and relief in being dominated. Terror, because the person taking control might not have your best interests at heart, relief because when you cede control, you also cede responsibility with it. Naturally the dynamic holds a fair amount of general fascination in fiction. It has a inbuilt dramatic element to it which helps keep it from being boring even when it's otherwise completely sweet and fluffy.

I don't think guys don't broach this whole thing much from the angle of the submissive partner, so I can see how it would be less fascinating to them. From the dominant side it's just basically a straight forward wish-fulfillment fantasy with little angst and inner struggle to it. But a lot of guys do enjoy fem-dom, where they get basically the same thing.

159) He's pretty handsome. I applaud you shipping him with everyone.

114. You shouldn't ever be ashamed of a pairing you like. Likewise, nobody should be ashamed of not liking a pairing. And how horrible that you're afraid to talk to your friends about what you like...I'm really sorry you're in that situation, and I certainly hope your friends wouldn't immediately slam you for something like that. I'm an N/C shipper, and a very open one -- just remember that disliking something doesn't make you elitist *or* a bitch, as long as you do it in a civil way -- it just means you know what you like. And that's awesome.

I would hope that anyone who needs to call OTP-ers elitist bitches would at least try to constructively point out someone's bad behavior before they sling labels. And figure out if it's the people or the pairing they hate before labeling in the first place.

So, don't be ashamed. There's space for everyone in the fandom, even if you need a little elbow room from stuff you don't like. If you're not already aware, there's an N/C comm here on LJ, and you're more than welcome to join.

101 - Honestly buddy, you don't need the same interests to be friends (though it does make it easier to talk to people, I'll admit). The best friendships aren't based on similar interests, but compatible personalities. Even so, I all suppose that it depends on what you're into, if you can find people to have interests that are similar to that, chances are you can get them into what you like.

As worried as you might be about it (and that fear is justified), just remember that changing schools for a problem (that is mostly a product of your mind) may affect the rest of your life, so it's just not worth changing the schools.

113 - I'm more or less with you. People who are willing to judge people negatively if they don't ship the same things they do are not the people who you want to talk with.

123 - This secret made me lol so hard. Good lord.

127 - I don't think it's just his upbringing that made him like that, mind you. Genetics probably come into it and all.

128 - I LOVE THAT SHOW.

132 - I never realized it, but I think it's amazing that she actually has brown eyes and brown hair. Why is that so rare in fiction ;__;

147 - Not gonna lie, movies that are supposed to make people feel happy and fuzzy usually tend to make me feel alone :(

153 - LISTEN TO THIS SECRET, EVERYONE.

101 OP

(Anonymous) 2009-03-27 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, I feel a little silly after reading the secret again. I guess when you've been with the same group of friends since 7th grade, it's easy to forget how you came to meet them in the first place.

Thanks for the advice. Seeing these responses definitely makes me feel better about entering a new school. ♥
