Anime perverts. Sanji, Mineta, Shinji Ikari, Master Roshi. Especially since so many are supposed to be heroes. At least Mori on Bungo Stray Dogs is supposed to be a monster.

Useless female characters that are only there to be the macguffin (someone's daughter/girlfriend/thing to be rescued) or a love interest, but who doesn't actually have anything to do with the plot or have her own character arc (other than being a prize for the main male character). Give her a skill goddamnit.

Default-dere tsundere. The ones whose normal personality is "nice person" and only turns angry when their crush does something often innocuous and unintentional to make them mad. Default-tsun are adorable, love them, but default-dere come off as fake and childish. Dunno why, maybe because I've known real people who were like that (minus the physical violence) and my opinion of them was that they needed to grow up and learn to control their tempers, while if someone is cranky and mean most of the time it's probably because of some deeper issue that I'd be sympathetic towards.

Antiheroes who aren't genuinely good people. I like a Han Solo type or the Boromir type, not a hero in name only or even a full on evil jackass who is only the "hero" because the villain is worse. Just not my thing at all.

Woobie villains who start out as villains but suddenly they aren't really villains and never were. I love a good redemption arc, but it has to work. it has to be believable. And it can't just ignore the past and pretend it never happened.

Perfect precocious children who are basically tiny (idealized) adults with a couple adorable childlike quirks tacked on.

The only good thing about them is that they're usually killed off to motivate the protagonist and I don't have to deal with them anymore. (Suzanne Collins took way too long to kill Prim...I did like Rue though weirdly enough.)

Soapbox mouthpiece characters. The type that's only there to preach the author's beliefs at you. I mean, a lot of autgors have characters do this low-key but some are just tooo obnoxious and obvious to ignore.

I finally finished my balloon dog so I will NOT be crocheting. Going to relax this weekend and try to finish my last book of the year. Also work on beating BOTW before 2024.

Getting a new battery in my car tomorrow. And writing Christmas cards. Other than that, currently on a 911 rewatch and also thinking about watching some Doctor who. And lots of kitty snuggle time.

I’m starting on a 1500 piece puzzle. I think I did a 1000 piece once about 20-25 years ago so I’m super nervous. But it’s gorgeous so I’m also excited! My advent calendar this year is a puzzle and it’s been fun, but each day is only 42 pieces. I kinda feel like I just entered a marathon without learning how to walk…

My local warhammer store held a Secret Santa and tomorrow is the party/event where everyone goes to pick up their presents. :3 My partner had a big present under the tree so I'm really excited to see what that is (and also my own present, of course!).

Today was also a day off for me so we took my dog out for a walk at the local park; I got some really pretty shots.

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best.

Just to clarify - it's my intention to make all the secrets left in this thread, so even if they're not marked claimed, they will be made. I'll monitor this thread until tomorrow's secret post goes up, so feel free to leave your comments until then!

I really hope that Paramount gives the Frasier reboot the Roseanne treatment. Jettison Grammer himself, and find a way to keep the rest of the cast. They work best when they are bouncing off everyone but him anyway, they just needed him to bring them all together.

If Star Trek really wants to do a Section 31 movie or show, then it shouldn't try to convince us it is a cool edgy Space-CIA. Instead admit that it is the Space version of the Serbian Black Hand: Corrupt, self selected, and self serving. Stop trying to make S31 cool, Star Trek. Even DS9 didn't try to do that when it was trying to be its darkest anti-Trekist.

It never fails to surprise me how weirdly defensive and aggressive some fans get whenever first person narration is criticised. "I leapt to defend this great wrong, 'it is the best and nothing else is acceptable,' I demanded they accept this obvious fact!".

I hate it when I can't make a scenario work for a fic. I have this great idea where The Doom of Valyria was just Godzilla waking up in Westeros, but, dammit, I can't make the actual plot itself work. I hate when that happens.

Setting is the 1980s, what would be the best Mid West State/City to have a secretive government research base in? Needs to have a reasonable amount of wildlife in it, suitable for an outdoorsman. Does anyone have any ideas? I thought maybe Michigan, but it seems pretty suburban and crowded, was it like that in the eighties?

A Rant About the Absolute State of this Internet

Does Tumblr actively hate its users, or is the site's fuckery emblematic of the broader trend of the internet becoming less and less user-friendly over time?

I know, I know. "Tumblr sucks! Why are you still there?" I'm still there because my fandom is still there, and so that's where I need to announce updates to my fic. But holy goddamn hells, the interface has become nigh unbearable. Making a post used to be a quick and simple endeavor, as it should be, but now it takes half an hour to format a simple fic exerpt + link post. The editor is bogged down in code (oh, sorry; "features!"), so it reacts sluggishly, and you often find yourself selecting something you had no intention on selection. It "blocks" sections of a post, so if you try to delete, say, a single line of text, it's prone to getting confused and thinking you want to delete everything; if you try to edit or add a word, it's prone to sending you to an entirely different part of your post. Oh, and now it automatically cuts text without your go-ahead -- perhaps a small thing, but...it cuts after only, like, three paragraphs, which I feel incentivizes the kind of quick, shallow discourse that destroys discussion.

(Not that discussion was ever all that fantastic on Tumblr, but sometimes it could be; and now, well... The word "expand" has a particular psychological effect, I think. You see it, you think, "*sigh* this is gonna be long," and "long" feels like "hard," and so you scroll on, passing on a post that you would have gladly read a year ago, when it wouldn't have been partially hidden)

Now, some of the problems above can be solved with the HTML editor, but not all. And, in some ways, the HTML editor is more frustrating, because you feel even more intensely like you should have far more control than you actually do over the interface.

Anyway. I came away tonight feeling actively attacked by the site's designers, who apparently value aesthetics over functionality. But then I got to thinking: that's everywhere, now, isn't it? Sites that are re-designed in ways that look impressive, maybe, to someone, but that are busy, confusing, and counterintuitive to the end-user; sites that load and respond slowly, because somebody didn't get the memo about operational complexity (i.e. that you should strive for less of it); sites that do UI "overhauls" that no one fucking needs and surely haven't asked for. It's like they're all trying to make the experience of going online as unpleasant as possible, which you'd think would make us log off, but...no. We're as hooked and as online as ever, and sinking ever deeper into misery, because the quality of our drug of choice is on a steady decline.

On that note, how's your day going?
