Purity test time!

Have you in the past, let's say as far back as when you were 15 years old until now, ever said or done something that you would now consider bigoted?

Any sort of bigotry counts and no need to bog this down with "bigoted by whose standards?!?" because we're strictly talking about younger/past-you as judged by older/present-you.

You don't have to say what it was, that isn't the point. I'm only curious: what % of us would pass a multiple decade purity test?

Yes. I was massively homophobic before. Due to my upbringing mostly. It was fandom and then my liberal law school that knocked sense in to me. And eventually helped me realize I wasn't straight either.

As I said yesterday, I wouldn't pass that test. There's a lot of stuff I had to push against and figure out on my own.

Yes, of course. I grew up in a conservative area. It takes time to unlearn all of that stuff.

Yes. Pretty sure I was subconsciously rascist for awhile there because I grew up in a town with literally zero people of color. I didn't think I was rascist, but I had only tv stereotypes in my brain since I had never actually encountered a real live non-white person until I was in my 20s.

Can't say I remember but then again most of my memory of being 15 has been blocked due to trauma.

Of course, and I would go so far as to distrust anyone who claims they have never said or done anything bigoted before.

That would only tell me they are firmly unaware of any unconscious biases they may have had back then or have now and might refuse to acknowledge them if pointed out.

Nope. Literally never.

It's not that I think of myself as particularly virtuous, its just that I don't think my vices have ever been... Well I was GOING to say unfair, but I KNOW that I have been unfair to people, but never motivated by their characteristics. I know what was in my own heart when I said or did whatever I did.

I really should reiterate, however that this is purely by my own standards. I am fully aware that anyone looking at me from the outside would find it possible to consider much of my uglier side to be bigoted. I am aware that I would not pass even the most basic check for "correct" language. But I know what I mean, why I say it, and know that if I can find a suitably ugly word for someone who has earned my displeasure, I will happily use it regardless of the person I'm speaking to. You might disagree, say I'd only be so cruel to a person if I hated their IDENTITY. But I know the depths of my hate, and I know that what drives it has - I do not fib here - NEVER been about what they are, but 100% of the time what they have said or done.

Yuup. I went through an "edgy" phase in high school where I thought telling racist jokes was the funniest thing ever. I thank god every day that social media wasn't a thing back then.

No, because I knew from a very young age that making fun of someone, or being hateful towards an entire group, for who they are was an awful thing to do. Tarring all of one type of person with the same brush never once occurred to me because it seemed stupid as fuck?

It's one thing not knowing the specifics of a culture someone is from, especially if you haven't met anyone from that culture, it's another thing entirely to use awful words targeted at groups and think that's in any way okay or normal. And I'm someone that hadn't heard one very common racial slur until I was 16, but you bet your fucking ass I never once uttered it because it was clearly meant to be hurtful so why would I say it?

It really just seems like you're trying to make yourself feel better for being a bigot, and it's surprising there are so many people acting like being a bigot is some sort of rite of passage that everyone goes through. Although I guess it makes sense that you can't seem to comprehend that other people are different than you because that's how bigots think, but some of us genuinely are not and never have been, whether you believe it or not.

I wouldn’t pass because what was ok over 30 years ago isn’t ok now. It shouldn’t have been ok then but it was. It’s great that we recognize that. Although it’s almost like you don’t recognize that and think people should be shamed for not having 2025 awareness in 1992. But tbf, that’s because I’m also assuming you’re the same anon who was going on about purity culture the other day and you may not be that person.

I probably used gay as a pejorative a few times back when it was very common - 'That's so gay!' (some things probably were gay, but that didn't make them bad, which was how it was getting used). I used 'retarded' as a synonym for stupid or idiotic, not really thinking about how it was connected to people with special needs.

I know I made slut-shaming jokes because I didn't really understand what slut-shaming really was.

I don't think I used any racial or homophobic slurs, but I certainly didn't call out other people for doing it. (There was also a slur that I heard sometimes that I didn't realize was one for the longest time because it was not in English, and I didn't truly understand its full meaning for years.)

I accidentally made a joke about a trans woman because I thought she had made the joke first (her first name was Amanda and I thought she was deliberately being funny by choosing that name). It was mortifying to realize other people thought I was trying to make fun (they thought it was funny, but I didn't).

I thought there would be a link to an actual test and was disappointed.

I can't remember anything specific, but I'm sure I haven't gone the last 20 years without saying or doing anything remotely racist.

Not in terms of being homophobic or racist. I just wasn't raised to think less of anyone for immutable characteristics.


I have definitely told and laughed at some tasteless jokes though. Like...jokes about the Titan submarine exploding. I do sometimes sink to that level.

I honestly used to be a very angry and sad kid and liked "offensive" comedy in general, like grossout and meanspirited humor, and I didn't have good judgement or context for what was a funny edgy joke and what was just bigoted stuff poorly disguised as humor. Never was one to say racial slurs, at least I had the sense to know that was out of line. I would however repeat stereotype jokes I heard without totally understanding what it was, just that it was inappropriate, which made it funnier... Yeah I was dumb and had a shitty home life where I didn't exactly learn nuanced political views.

Not really an excuse, I regret some of the ways I acted but I don't blame myself for not knowing better either. It's definitely not something to be proud of. Around when I was 15 I found livejournal and just getting to hear more perspectives changed my mind pretty fast on that type of thing.

Yes, of course. I was mildly aphobic for example, because I was struggling with my own sexuality.
I had and I probably have a lot of biases thanks to my upbringing. I like to think that I am better than younger me.
We have a lot of common phrases that are actually quite racist when you stop and think about them and I still struggle not to use them. They are REALLY common.

I used the r-slur a lot, used the other r-word for minor violations/aggravations like "I'm bring r***ed by this workload," and told girls who bashed female characters to "get a sex change (because if you hate girls you shouldn't be one)."

That was all online because I wasn't ignorant enough to think I wouldn't get in trouble for saying that stuff where an adult could hear it. I knew it was bad and did it anyway.

I'm not even 100% sure I'd pass the purity test now, being real with you. There's always going to be something I need to learn/relearn and areas I need to improve on - it's only in the last week or so I learned that cerebral palsy is a spectrum, for instance.

I wouldn't pass. Grew up in a household and neighborhood where conservative ideologies were favored/normalized. A lot of things I had to be exposed to in order to unlearn the harmful stuff.
