Have you ever met a fandom / internet friend IRL?

How did it go?

A few! I met greghousegf in San Francisco and we went to a museum. It was a very cool one!

I've also met TWO guildmates from WoW. The first we just spent the night at his house on our way to a different place. He introduced us to Game of Thrones. xD I also had an old guildmate visit us when we went to DC. He drove us to Baltimore to visit the aquarium and eat at some hole in the wall philly cheesesteak place he went to growing up.

Three times. One was awkward but fine, two was awkward and not fine, and three was creepy and I regret ever befriending them.

Oh wait, there was a 4th. I got dinner with a guy and his wife from my guild in an online game because I mentioned I'd be traveling through his area. It was fun!

Not specific fans, only been to a few conventions. Well, way back in the day, the year Deathly Hallows came out, I went to a Harry Potter convention in England and met up with a Lucius Malfoy fangroup at one point.

Once, and it was a bit awkward because they had literally gotten their heart broken the night before. It was actually a big gathering so they weren't alone but I felt bad and basically acted like an idiot because I didn't know what to do and followed them around for like 80% of the time I was there.

Yup. She is my platonic soul mate and we have visited each other and taken holidays together to places like a writing con, the Ren faire, hotel weekends to see the newest movie we're dying to watch, etc. We talk every day. We write together. It's awesome. :D

Yes, twice. One went very well indeed and we're good buddies to this day, have stayed with each other etc. The other also went pretty well, but my health collapsed soon after and I haven't kept up. I feel bad about it but that's just life.

Yes, a lot of times. (I live in a major city of my country, so either people are close enough most of the time or visit at least as a transport hub. Also I like to travel)
Some people are now my IRL friends. Some people I had a fun day with. Some were just a little bit awkward. With some people I had good relationship offline, but had a fallout online.

Lots of times, but I'm older and have been on the internet in some form or another since the mid-90s. You vet people as much as you can, of course, and be aware of potential red flags or creepsters, meet in public, etc. Overall, it went really well for me. I've traveled to hang out with people I met through a shared hobby, and I'm still very close friends with people I met in fandom. We've stayed at each others houses, met up for lunch/dinner/hangouts, etc.

There's been a few awkward moments, but I wouldn't trade it for the world and it's made my life a lot more interesting.

Great! We got to meet each other's cats, cook together, we've done craft time in the same room, and for a while we were in the same in-person D&D group but now we D&D online.

Re: Have you ever met a fandom / internet friend IRL?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-27 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
My two BBFs for life are women I met on the internet first! (Ok, well technically I met one at a high school event but we didn't connect at all until we both ended up in the same HARRY POTTER LIVEJOURNAL FANFICTION COMM in college because this was the 2000s). I've met a lot of internet friends! I've had maybe one bad experience, because I am very much the same person offline that I am online, and I have a pretty good Red Flag Detector.

Re: Have you ever met a fandom / internet friend IRL?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-27 07:29 am (UTC)(link)
Wah so many times that this question made me feel warm and fuzzy. The first time I ever attempted to meet an online friend was so long ago that mobiles weren't a thing and we couldn't find each other in the crowd. Later met a friend and we had to SMS text each other "what are you wearing" to make sure since photos were so pixelated. But before I was of legal age my parents always accompanied me to ensure that things would be fine.

Later met a lot of online acquaintances at local cons. Some times were fun, others not so much, others were downright traumatizing. Some I befriended or dated for a bit, some were weirdos. None of them are part of my life now but those are good memories as a whole.

Yes. It was exciting, and the event we met at was a blast. But I stopped talking to that friend after we met because they made me uncomfortable. Grateful I took the chance, don't regret anything, but it was a learning experience.

"2026 is 2016"

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get why people have suddenly gotten nostalgic or saying this in general - but my only good contribution was reminding people who follow me that Bad Lip Reading of The Empire Strikes Back, mainly Yoda's seagulls song, came out in 2016.

The only thing I'm nostalgic for from 2016 is how everyone was playing Pokemon Go.

2016 was when my depression was becoming all consuming. I really didn't have a good time in the 2010s. =(

Re: "2026 is 2016"

I think it's kinda funny because I talked to a friend about this and we both actually couldn't really remember ANYTHING that made 2016 a standout year. I mean, there likely was stuff (and I looked it up but already forgot again) but nothing memorable enough for me to be nostalgic for.

Delusional fans

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I know every fandom has there little group of over the top fans, so what fandom that you've been in has had the most delusional fans?

Or, what fandom do you think had/has the most delusional obsessive fans? (My vote would be for Snapewives.)

secret #4

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I love when shows try to hide the pregnancy but are really obvious about "hiding" the pregnancy of their actors. I think Seinfeld pulled this off really well.

What other shows pulled off the "no this character is not pregnant at all" and then the fun follow up of "they are just randomly gone for sudden Plot Reasons"?

I liked the ones on I Love Lucy, Full House, and Jordan's pregnancies specifically on Scrubs.

What does it mean to "join a fandom"?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Context: I stumbled by a Tumblr pool about if you think people should consume the canon to join a fandom. A lot of comments that said no, talked about how they enjoyed fandom content for canons they never interacted with all the time. But I've been thinking, that's not really joining a fandom, right?

So I'm curious what does F!S think. What does it mean to join a fandom? Is consuming content from other fans enough?

Even if you are closed, WHY THE FUCK can't I view your fucking menu?!!?!

(Anonymous) 2026-01-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, just frustrated with restaurants that ONLY let you place online orders, and not just browse the menu, so if they're closed you can't even see what they offer.

Extra special FUCK YOU shout out to Burger King who only lets you see the breakfast menu during breakfast and the lunch/dinner menu during lunch/dinner. WHY CAN I NOT BROWSE YOUR FULL MENU AT ANY TIME????

Also I hate it when it makes you pick a specific location. Like sometimes I'm curious about a restaurant that isn't in my area, but it makes me put in a zip code and pick a specific location. Just show me the national fucking generic menu without prices. I am just curious.
