Sometimes I’ll dislike a certain character being written as a bottom in a fic and it’s not because I think it’s out of character or wrong, but because it’s very clear that the writer only knows how to write bottoms in one way only regardless of how the character acts in canon.

That's totally true, I feel like it goes for just sex roles in general, sometimes a writer will have everything pretty in character until it gets to the anal sex and then it becomes really generic.

I know exactly what you mean OP, lmao. It’s always the weepy, gaspy, whimpering bottom and to be fair there are characters that fit that, but there are also plenty that don’t but it gets shoved onto the characters head without thought and like you said: it becomes OOC because of the personality not the act.

I don't really have much to say about the secret itself -- I think I'm just not in any fandoms that have this problem. I tend to avoid big fandoms like the plague, and I only have one slash ship I'm into that's big enough to have an active fandom, but it's still a pretty small one where there aren't enough writers to notice trends, and the bottom characterization/top characterization debate doesn't come up. (It's hard for me to explain, but the reason WHY people don't argue about it is because it's really obvious who the bottom is because the character's canon personality is just basically the bratty bottom archetype, so anyone writing the character as a stereotypical bratty bottom during sex is kind of leaning into his characterization rather than ignoring his personality in order to make him a generic fanfic bottom. Like, if you understand what the writers were going for when writing these characters, you can very much pick up the subtext that one likes to be dominated/disciplined by the other.)

So yeah, my only experience with slash ship characterization is where the bottom is really obvious (despite it not being textual), it's really hard to write him as a stereotypical bottom in a way that comes off as OOC (in fact, writing him as a stereotypical bottom often gets you some deeply in-character moments), and there are no debates in this fandom about how him being bottom or top is the "wrong" answer (people really don't care if you write him as a top either, because there are a lot of reasons why he would/it is deeply plausible that he might top too, and people in this fandom really aren't fussed reading the occasional fic where he tops). But there is definitely a dominant trend in the fic and no one minds this and everyone 100% would predict that trend. So like... I think this is a very atypical slash ship fandom experience? Or more like, this fandom is ONE typical slash ship fandom experience but far from the only one and I'm just not in enough big slash ship fandoms to have had the issue of people copy-pasting a generic bottom characterization on the designated bottom in the ship in order to be bothered by it.

Anyway, sorry for rambling about my personal experiences that add up to "haven't experienced this personally in any of my fandoms" which is not particularly interesting. But I mainly wanted to comment because I just really like the picture used for this secret -- it cracks me up and I think it's really cute.

As an occasional enjoyer of dominant bottoms, I feel you.

Of the two characters I can make the strongest 'this guy bottoms' arguments for, admittedly one of them is of the pouting, preening, eyelash fluttering type. I don't think he bottoms because he's a prissy queen-- I could just as readily accept that he doesn't do anal and the point is moot, not everyone does! But, there are really specific ways the two guys peacock around each other in terms of what traits and body parts get emphasized, and the other guy is very much communicating 'I've got a big dick' in how he dresses, stands, sits...

The OTHER guy I think is a bottom would NOT be a 'plug into any m/m sex scene' bottom. He might whimper/moan-- a first time or two with a more experienced partner with a canonically big dick and I can see it. But he's not going to lie back and let his top drive once he gets the hang of what he's doing, and he IS going to bring his own ideas, his own kinks, his own attitude. And because of that, there are way too many fics where he's a Dom top and not just like... a guy.

I love Martok, I do, but I will never forgive Deep Space Nine doing my boy Gowron dirty like they did. There was no need for him to become an envious double dealer like that. He and Martok could have been a (platonic) power couple instead. I get Martok was a "fan favorite", but Gowron was my favorite!

I hate my current fandom. I love the movie. My fellow fans just seem to be in the fandom to spitefully one up each other though. Nobody seems to celebrate the movie or the characters though. Fans ruin everything.

Some people in the true crime community are crazy and/or terminally stupid. Whenever there is an active investigation, they expect the police to release ALL information publicly, and get mad when they don't. Any time there is a person of interest, they want to swarm and harass them, their family, their friends, their neighbors, and their employer. And a lot of these people seem not to believe in due process. If a guy seems "suspicious" or "creepy" or "sketchy," and he MIGHT have been in the area at the time the crime happened, then that's enough and we should just go ahead and lock him up forever and/or kill him because obviously a weird guy is guilty of SOMEthing. And even if the police clear him, well, he's probably still guilty, and let's continue to stalk and harass him just in case. It's honestly scary that so many people are so quick to shout that people should give up their rights or that they don't deserve rights in the first place.
