Beautiful vs. ugly animation.

(Anonymous) 2026-04-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't grow up watching a lot of Japanese animation, so my reference is mostly Disney and kid's stuff from the 80s. What would you consider to be beautiful or ugly animation?

ATLA is mostly beautiful, with a couple bits of ugly occasionally. Powerpuff girls is pretty.

Cow and Chicken was horribly ugly. Powerpuff reboot is ugly.

I recently looked up Shakespeare: The Animated Tales, a childhood favourite.

There’s something a bit grotesque about many of the animation styles that I didn’t quite remember. I guess I already liked that kind of thing even as a child.

Here’s their Midsummer Night’s Dream, for the curious: https://youtu.be/hp9gu23rgks

Beautiful: The Secret of Kells, Disney's Sword in the Stone, The Iron Giant

Ugly: One Piece, Big Mouth

Or did you mean specifically japanese animation? Beautiful: Spirited Away, Lain, and Haibane Remei come to mind. For ugly I never liked Lupin.

if you specifically mean anime, there's a wider middle ground than just ugly and pretty - there are artsy animations made to be very artsy, like Gankutsuo. There are absolutely trash animation done very fast and very simply for hentai - the faces are implausibly weird, the action is janky, and the only thing that ever gets passably well-animated is obviously the sex. In between is the massive gulf of gray. There are beautifully animated action scenes in the same episode of One Piece that also features the jankiest half-assed faces (Toei is notorious for padding their weekly shows with junk and saving the good animation for special scenes). A lot of short-run anime has what one would consider passable animation - it's not art, but it gets the job done in the same way that any weekly Saturday morning episode of Bugs Bunny got the job done. It's not ugly by a long shot, but it's not "beautiful."

Whatever's going on with a crappy reboot of Mononoke is an outlier even among anime, it's not a widespread thing where you can gauge pretty vs ugly on sight. Most anime is like your 80s cartoons - it works. Sometimes better, like Gummi Bears, sometimes worse, like He-Man. It's very rarely "cancel after 6 episodes" ugly, I mean they let shitty He-Man run for how long? It was the same three cells repeated over different backgrounds every episode, and yet that's somehow a classic.

Only one of these really qualifies as a romcom, IMO, but the others are at least romantic movies:

Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Dirty Dancing
Clueless
The Sound Of Music

I somewhat enjoy While You Were Sleeping. If it weren't a Christmas movie would I ever rewatch it? Probably not. But it's good enough to get rewatched every third Christmas or so.

And ok, my ultimate guilty pleasure: I actually kind of enjoy the first two Twilight movies.

I'm sure there are more, but off the top of my head:

(Anonymous) 2026-04-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Baby Boom
Dirty Dancing
50 First Dates
Last Holiday
Crazy Rich Asians
About A Boy
Basically all Sandra Bullock romcoms, but particularly Miss Congeniality, Two Weeks Notice, and The Lost City

Is Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead a romcom? If so, add that to the list!

So, I Married an Axe Murderer
Last Christmas
The Tall Guy

I almost want to include 2005's Daredevil movie, but I'm probably the only person on the planet who would count that movie as a romcom.

I really loved The Lake House, although it might be more that I associate it with a particular friend and good memories.

10 Things I Hate About You made me fall in love with Heath Ledger. That one is amazing.

For anyone who needs to vent.

Re: Vent thread

I'm currently dealing with menopause. And it is so freaking frustrating. The hot flashes. The weird hormones. The irritability. The sleeplessness. But honestly the part that is irritating me the most is the fact that I'm peeing all the time. Sometimes every five minutes. I'm so tired from not sleeping last night, but I couldn't take a nap today because I was getting up every five minutes to pee.

I've started hormone therapy, but honestly it doesn't seem to be doing much so far. Only been on it a couple weeks, I know it has to build up. But I'm just so frustrated.

We had spring break last week. I literally slept for the first 4 days. Dissociated for the next 2. Finally started feeling like myself again yesterday, and now it's time to go back.

How do you stop yourself from (non-severe) self-destructive behavior?

(Anonymous) 2026-04-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not talking about, like, full-blown alcoholism or gambling addiction or getting yourself deep into unnecessary debt, but just the smaller things you do that aren't good.

Like spending money on things you don't need, spending time doomscrolling on Reddit instead of doing something more productive, watching garbage videos, wasting money on mobile games, drinking too much soda or eating too much junk food...

Stuff that isn't just AWFUL, but things that make you feel worse after you do them. Like I waste time looking at snark subreddits, and then feel bad about myself afterwards. I order something dumb online that I didn't need, didn't even want that much.

I just struggle with this a LOT. I'm going to make a list of more productive stuff to do, like even playing a video game vs scrolling through Reddit feels more productive. It's just hard for me to stop myself, I don't have enough self-control.

For the anon from yesterday(?) asking about nails

(Anonymous) 2026-04-06 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I meant to reply and then didn't, so hopefully you'll see it today. I have never had strong nails, but last summer mine just got to a horrible state. Peeling, flaking, just absolutely awful, and I tried to use a nail strengthening polish on them, which worked great for a few days, then when the polish started to come off, my nails were left in the worst shape of my entire life.

I searched and found that jojoba oil is fantastic for nails. I got a bottle of some, just a cheap no-name brand, and used a drop or two on my nails multiple times a day.

I also discovered that the brand of hand soap you use seems to have a really huge effect on your nails. My nails were improving, then over Christmas someone gifted me a bottle of Bath & Body Works foaming hand soap. I don't buy theirs because I had noticed it dried out the skin on my hands in the past, but when I started using it, it also messed up my nails! I stopped and went back to my regular gel hand soap (Mrs Meyer's is the brand I use) and it helped a lot.

I also stopped using hand lotion that is mainly meant to smell nice, and started using some that is more serious hydration. I don't like my hands being greasy so I use it at night. It's Gold Bond healing brand, and it really works well.

At this point, my nails are probably in the best shape they've ever been in for my entire life. They still aren't exactly thick and beautiful, but they are not peeling and flaking and they don't split when I look at them cross eyed. I was at work a day or two ago and I realized that they had, on their own, gotten long enough for me to want to cut them, without them being damaged. Usually I am forced into cutting them because they start to peel or split, and I have to cut them short before the damage gets too bad. But this time they had actually gotten long enough that I wanted to cut them just to make them shorter!

I wish you luck, it's honestly a small thing that probably shouldn't matter, but it really irritates me when my nails are messed up.
