No, I care because you're trying to actively shame people (like...oh...me) who just happen to not agree with you. Whereas you're scarily preoccupied with what other people do to fictional characters for...some reason that can't seem to come up with, even after being asked multiple times. Do you just not know, or are you too ashamed to say what it is?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
So, wait. You think it's a BAD thing that she actually means what she's doing? You'd prefer it to all be fake?

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I can respect that you only like canon pairings, especially for the reasons you've stated. But — well, for instance, do you also object to crossovers? AUs? alternative timelines in which the fic goes 'what is this had happened instead of this'? the main point of fic is that we're extrapolating from canon to make something different. If we expand your way of thinking, pretty much all fanfic is OOC on some level. And if we only stuck to fic describing what's already in the canon, it would get pretty boring pretty fast.

If a character is shown as being down with the opposite sex I don't default to thinking they swing both ways and I think doing so is just stretching for one's purposes

But that's because you're (apparently, please correct me if I've misread what you've said upthread) straight yourself. I'm bisexual, and my default is that a character, if not otherwise stated, can swing pretty much any way they can. In my perspective, I'm not stretching the truth for my own purposes, just like in yours you're not stretching it for your own either. But the fact is, we both are. Our own sexuality affects the way we interpreting characters. And that's fine! what's less fine is shaming other people for shipping two men or two women because you happen to default them to straight.

Frankly, that's what I don't get about this thread. Why don't you just scroll on? where are the kicks in shaming people because they interpret characters differently than you do?

So let's hope it never gets made so that you keep living oh ho ho ho ho

No, but seriously, what did your therapist say about that? I hope you are receiving the help you need.

Idk. After I found out Danny and Laura were super Scientologists, I lost interest in the show.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, op. :(

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Because writing two characters having sex or being in a relationship automatically = not caring at all about the characters / characterization.

Except not.

double take

wait that's not a woman?!

wait there is a new Buddha film?

DOOD I LOVED THOSE BOOKS. I still look for them in bookstores, because I'd love to have the whole series and am too damn lazy to just go on Amazon and buy 'em.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If you want a game where the main character goes through a lot to save his pet dog, go play Heart of Darkness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYyZfME5XYY

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So.. you don't read it, you don't actually know anything about it, so you just ~assume people are just making shit up and don't care about personality/characteristics because they DARED to make so-and-so fuck someone of the same sex?

I mean, how would you know that's what they're doing (somehow!) if you didn't read it, ever, at all? Obviously either you read some of it, or you're actually so completely bigoted and gross that you think writing someone as attracted to the same sex = changing their entire personality and character beyond recognition.

Which says an awful lot about you, and none of it remotely complimentary.

I got freaked out by the mermaid humping, ngl

Although I'm fine with everything else she's done and with weird stuff in general, so I have no idea why that one scene bothers me.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
your friends sound like snobs :( videogame snobs

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to imagine this secret was written by Robin Scherbatsky.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, I like their dynamic with their wives way too much to ship Bertie/Lionel.

So I platonically ship them.

[identity profile] saturnonjupiter.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Crossovers/AUs/'what if this was different' are fine.. as long as they're labeled as such. I am not a HUGE fan of AU but I don't shame writers of it or anything. But if you just go shipping two peeps and one is dating someone else and think that's fine and dandy with the canon of the show.. nope. You can have your interpretation but when it quite clearly has no means of lining up with canon, at least recognize it should probs be labeled as such.

Indeed I am straight though as you probably gathered I am not overly interested in sex. I would have it if I got married but otherwise.. lol nope no use for it. You can take the characters as default bisexual but, from my way of thinking, the 'natural' orientation is the one that passes on your genetics and that's what most fictional characters are unless it's hinted they are bi/otherwise. Note I never want to have kids myself but I still think there's certain biological things about people that dictate their base features, like non-"Wow John you're so heterosexual" "Yeah man I am" sexual preference in fictional characters.

idk just look at all the replies, most of them terribly off-base. You at least present a decent flipside of the coin but a lot of these people are just mad and.. it's fun :C C:

Yeah, the uncanny valley is rampant and Polar Express should've taught everyone not to use this type of CGI. I'll still go see it though because I'm in love with pretty much everyone involved that I really can't see the movie being that much fail (aside from the imagery which is a huge disappointment). Directed by Spielberg, written by Wright, Serkis/Pegg/Frost in the cast line-up and score by Williams. Oh, and it's TINTIN. Yeah, full of epic win.

[identity profile] sparrow-lately.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Because one sad thing means you mourn for seven years or you're ridiculous?
Wut.
I'm so seriously behind on my mourning, holy shit! I have to stop enjoying my life because people have died and I best get on that.

[identity profile] marshwiggledyke.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god that game.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that there's this weird assumption in some places that what you write reflect your RL preferences, and that the amount of female characters you write about are the amount of female characters you think should be represented in various canons.

It's just a faulty premise, that's all. No need to care about those people. Or even better, state your opinion (as clearly and calmly as possible) to show that you disagree.

[identity profile] tigerdreams.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Those books are SO AMAZING. I'd love to see them made into movies (though if, as people here are saying, Miyazaki doesn't really do faithful adaptations, I'd be just as happy for someone else to do it)!

[identity profile] saturnonjupiter.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
sry I wasn't entirely sure what you wanted me to reply to. If you need validation you're still in character I.. can't provide that.

can't help but wonder if change from guys to girls was conscious decision on your part.

[identity profile] atlikarinca.livejournal.com 2011-10-23 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahhhh you just summed up everything I feel about minimalist fic! I've yet to read a fic that doesn't scream of trying.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-23 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This. In my country his height is the average.
