I'm hoping it was an isolated incident...

[identity profile] unicornherds.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody "jumped all over someone for using the term bitch" - it was simply pointed out that yes, it is a sexist word. And even if that pisses you off, it doesn't change the fact that it's sexist. Nobody is saying you can't use it, people use sexist/racist/ist words all the time. But it doesn't harm anyone to actually acknowledge the inherent sexism and misogyny of the word.

Donna Noble? You're on f!s now?

But you already—nevermind.

*tears up*

You mean the kind of art students who, when you respond with something like, "Thank you for the critique but I'm happy enough with it as is," act like you shot their mom and fucked their dog?

I think part of the problem with them is that they probably spend so much time only talking to other art students, they get the idea that everybody knows what they know and everybody should approach art like they do. Because everybody they know does. A bit insular, the art world looks sometimes.

Deaf people love it when there are hearing people who actually make an effort to communicate with them. AND, there are a ton of opportunities for interpretation jobs, especially in the medical community. Look into it.

Poster who asked you the question here--

Thank you for your reply. Please please please tell me that's just a hypothetical, and not an actual case because WTF?!?! Who would ever think it's okay to harm their baby because he or she has a faculty you don't? I get refusing to be defined by and reduced to one's impairment, and not living your life feeling like you are lacking, but that's just incredibly sick and selfish.

And I didn't realize there was so much prejudice against medically deaf (is that the proper term?) people who still have some hearing. And from what I understand about the cochlear implant, it's a very complicated issue (electronic "hearing," uncertain long-term effects, impossible to reverse, etc.), and I honestly don't know what I'd do if I ever had to make a decision for my child. If it really was straight-out, uncomplicated cure, there's no question I would get it, and from what I'm gathering a lot of deaf people would take offense at that?

Absolutely agreed on the 'fandom is the people' thing. I'm still close to a couple friends from my older fandom who still draw for the pairing, and I still love their work to pieces. Just because my well went dry doesn't mean I can't enjoy the fruits of their labor. <3

I'm actually the opposite on the writing thing though; it's been YEARS since I wrote anything fandom related, save for a few drabbles. But this new fandom/pairing (once again, icon related) has had me writing more fic/drawing more art than anything since my oldest of fandoms. And the voices almost flow naturally for me; that's never happened to me before. I've always been one of those fan-workers who take forever on a piece because the words don't come out right or the art takes 5 hours to draw. It's nice.

God, this. And I totally hate the excuse of them saying it'll be okay when he gets older. No. Just no. That's like she stood there and waited and WATCHED him grow up until 'he was ready and ripe for the picking'. That is unbelievably creepy.

I know it was a relief when I was given my labeled of what I am suffering from. I was misdiagnose for years as ADD (it always felt wrong but pressure from parents and me being 12 sucked) and was given medication that gave me a psychotic episode (I wish I was lying).

It wasn't until I was an adult when I got re-diagnosed with things that were more fitting (depression spectrum, APD, language disability, memory problems, etc).

I understand a bit how the OP feels but from two classmates who are diagnose with Aspergers, a part of their therapy is admitting they have it and ask those who don't have it call them if they don't read the social cues of a situation. And you may say bs, but two classes, two different students stood up and told everyone that they have and to please help them if don't get a cue right.

And since I have a language disability myself, I do mention it to others because I am always worried if I make a mistake or if confused someone. I want to make sure they understand clearly what I am trying to communicate and that I am open to re-explain myself.

For me, the chorus parts Naya had to sing were slightly above her range. She was reaching and you could hear it, which ruins song enjoyment for me, since I could reach for notes and sing them passably. I want to hear someone sing better than me. She was fantastic on the verses, and so was Amber. But the chorus...

That was just a lesson song, though. It was only supposed to be related to mash-ups.

I'll still theorize that if Dirk goes the same route, he's gonna have a horse porn site instead.

This is one of those things we will just have to wait and never see who's right. :P

101 is the hardest because SO many people want to give it a try, but not many stick around and seriously get into the language. By class number two you should have a much easier time. (This is my experience with Japanese and it seems to apply to other languages)

This video just unboringfied the post instantly. ShaZAM.

Getting a degree in a language is a lot different than taking a general Asian Studies major, since Asia is a pretty big place.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Thank you.

Yep.

MY WORK HERE IS DONE.

:D

I will definitely keep this in mind. :) Thank you! ♥

I didn't like it either, but then I've not liked most of the songs this season. Even though last season's songs were random, I feel everyone sang them so much better.

But yeah, it was Naya's "Don't forget me" than ruined it. Everything else was perfection, but I hate when singers try to sing outside their range (also looking at you Chris Colfer). You can't do it, stop.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
There have to be hearing people who know ASL or else there wouldn't be ASL translators for the deaf. You need to be able to hear what's being said if you're a translator.
If you're really serious about studying it, you could develop a really useful skill that is helpful to deaf people who want to attend something requiring a translator (a class, a play, a presentation, etc) and which could pretty much guarantee you a job due to its rarity among the hearing.

People who would use a mental illness to excuse their behavior just annoy me. Especially with the fact that half of them are drama/attention-seeking trolls with no real concept of the disorder they claim to have.

Just to add, I realize the secret was worded a little harshly, and just because a person mentions having a mental illness is no reason to judge them for it based on your experience with a bunch of trolls and drama queens on a forum or whatnot.

This is the impression I get. God help you if you don't think studying human anatomy is the most worthwhile pastime ever.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
That is how I feel, too. I'm in my late twenties and if I tried to draw anything (which I will NEVER be doing again), it'd look like I was six years old. Even in late elementary school I knew I was hopeless and tried to get by writing paragraphs in the place of drawings.

As far as I know it's an isolated incident -- but the fact remains that there are some in the deaf community who really do think that's okay.

The deaf community can get very insular, and it's really very abusive towards people who don't fit their definition of 'deaf.' I've spent my whole life between worlds -- a hearing world that largely ignores me and a deaf world that doesn't want me. Made growing up in a deaf school a nightmare, let me tell you.

As for the cochlear implant, it's a tough situation. The debate over the ethics of implanting versus not implanting centers primarily over the fact that for the implant to be most effective it should be placed at an early age, usually before the child is old enough to be aware of the implications and make his own choice. What it boils down to is that there are elements in the deaf community who feel that it should be left up to the child. Deaf people may swear up and down that they're "differently abled" and that anything that might help them assimilate into society at large rather than force them to stick to their little enclaves of deaf people is a tool of the "hearing world" to abuse them with, but the fact of the matter is, it's really ultimately up to the parent, isn't it? Granted, it has its complications, but you have to weigh the risk of that versus the known quantity of deaf education, which has honestly been historically lacking -- and if anything, it's only gotten worse along with education overall because like everything else, there's more politics than money or sense.

As far as I'm concerned, if I had a deaf child, I'm not going to put my kid through the kind of trouble I went through -- he's getting the implant. He can hate me later for it, but I'm pretty much saving him at least some misery.
