I'm probably missing the point, but:

Actually, there are people out there who do jump on others for using the term. Luckily, not in this thread, but the internet is full of crazy people some days. So if that other anon was saying that they were tired that it happens sometimes (which is how I read that comment personally), then that's a pretty valid complaint.

But otherwise, you've got a good point.

And yet, here you are!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

And I want nothing more than to figure out how to complete that thought with, "And ____ is beyond!"

Just dive in! I'm not the greatest writer but I love to do it and I just posted my first Sherlock piece about a week ago. It was tiny & unbeta'd but everyone who commented on it was really lovely about it. They're all so nice :D

I know precisely how you feel..

Thankfully I'm inspired for other characters, too .. which has lead to a situation where I began writing something new, a pairing that people had not previously thought of before, and people liked that pairing SO MUCH they began to ship it, but now I think I'm the only one writing that pairing as well.

I don't know what could inspire you more. Try to get conversation going on why others ship it? Picspam?

I wasn't saying not to do it. Just that it might be something to consider - if the person seems uninterested, then they may very well be uninterested. I think I've been on both sides of this situation, with different RP partners, over the years.

I could probably conquer worlds if I had Kaito's support behind me. ...Or at least the motivation to clean my room, or something.

OMG, that happens to me so much >_< I'm fluent in two languages, studied Chinese and Japanese for three years (simultaneously), and am now taking an immersion course in Korean. My class is full of Chinese and Japanese, and some days I don't even know what language I'm speaking... and I often switch languages mid-sentence, especially if a moment ago I was talking one of the other languages....

I'm just lucky that learning Chinese, Japanese and Korean simultaneously kind of cuts down on being called a weeaboo XD even though I do enjoy anime quite a lot.

That said, I at least can sort of tell when people are doing the "I will now use words of X language because it's cool" versus having it slip out. For one, you can tell by the vocabulary - certain words tend to slip out most often (like "yes") or other exclamations. Also, you'd be getting a "weirder" mix. Weeaboo Japanese is made up of words commonly used in anime. But words that slip out for me in Korean are things like "department store" and "subway" (whereas I always, ALWAYS say "now" in Chinese. wtf, brain). Obvious daily life sorts of things.

/is an East Asian Studies major

I think most places make you choose to focus on one culture (though you also learn about others), and then study their language and history in depth. And IDK about other countries, but I have people CONSTANTLY badgering me as to when I will achieve fluency in my chosen language(s) because they just happen to need somebody for whatevering.

I know a kid who is 'black' but he's albino. His skin is definitely darker than the average white person's, when I first saw him I thought he had a mix of white, mexican, and african genes or something. I also feel bad for him because he looks different from the rest of his family, he feels like an outsider, and is always trying to overcompensate for that ):

Much better sort of role model than a religious or political leader!

[identity profile] kamikazemusume.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
Off topic, but... icon love. ♥

[identity profile] kathkin.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not disagreeing that either word is offensive, but I'd actually think of 'cunt' as being more commonly directed at men than women, whereas 'bitch' is exclusively directed either at women or at men who are seen as feminine. I think it might be a regional thing? (I'm in the UK.)

I've looked through the ghettostuck tag on tumblr and there's like two pages. Is there a more in-depth forum thread somewhere? This looks like a lot of racist bullshit personally.

I always thought it would be funny to wear that and walk around just to watch the reactions...

Lucky for Dave that he has the same prescription as Ben Stiller.

I'm curious as to how you know you could be BFFs with this person if you haven't interacted with them much OOC? RP, especially good RP, can create a false sense of closeness, but unless you chat or plurk or email OOC, that closeness is purely about good CR and good writing. It's awesome that you're having fun, but try to keep that perspective - and in the meantime ask the person if they're interested in getting to know YOU rather than just you're character. The worst they can do is say no, which will suck, yes, but at least you're not left wondering what might have been.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
His third post on the subject was actually really good; he didn't apologize or admit to accidentally whitewashing the characters as firmly as he could have, but he's trying. He's a privileged white guy so it's no surprise when he fucks up on race issues, and he stuck his foot in his mouth when trying to respond the first couple of times, but he's obviously trying to improve.

Hell, his newer post on Calmasis and non-gendered pronouns convinced me that he's pretty much trying to better person all-around. He's fumbling at it and I don't think he's the best person ever who never says anything privileged or racist or homophobic or transphobic or anything like that, and I think there's some questionable stuff in the comic itself, but I appreciate that he's trying.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
At least you are hopeful enough to get someone like him, I'm sure even Jack would turn me down. :/

I always identified weeaboos when they randomly directly substitute Japanese words for English ones, because grammar does not work that way and no one who actually speaks the language would say something so horribly awkward-sounding without pause.

[identity profile] lilya7.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Kudos to you, OP! And you're not pathetic, that's called "having a hobby" (in your case, reading and watching movies)
How's that not normal?

[identity profile] lilya7.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's just sensible.

[identity profile] poisontea.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think the reason why we didn't think anything of dating adults when we were 15/16 years old, yet would be unnerved to hear about a twenty-something year old dating a 15/16 year old now, is the exact reason why adults shouldn't be going after 15/16 year olds. At that age, you think you're grown up and mature when you're not, and can handle things when you can't, and it's the responsibility of the adults to know better and not go after someone vulnerable like that.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
I would have agreed with you... if you hadn't choosen the picture of an old man who is obviously in pain and is strapped down to a bed for a shitty fandom related secret. Common decency, what the fuck is that? Pathetic, indeed.

The complaints I've seen about people learning ASL have been directed at those who ALSO say "I WANT A DEAF BOYFRIEND LIKE EMMETT!!!!!! OMG!!!" and other over the top stuff like that. Which frankly if that's the only reason someone wants to learn sign language than please, don't!

On the other hand if you honestly want to learn ASL, please do! I'm hoping one of theses days High Schools will allow ASL as an alternative to the other foreign language requirements.
