Hmm. That's an interesting thought - though I'm not sure I'd agree 100%? I mean, I've found myself trying to use Korean/Japanese particles in Chinese - which is blatantly nonsensical grammatically.
The way my mind works, at least, if I'm going to do a substitution, it's usually because, for whatever reason, my mind jumps to the word in X language faster than in Y language. This could partially be because it's something that doesn't have as accurate a word in Y language, or because of using the word very often in X language. Another reason is when the words sound similar - I constantly find myself using the Japanese jikan instead of the Korean shikan.

I most often find myself substituting nouns, anyway - unless I do a full-out midsentence switch.

If anything, I think the key issue is - somebody who is fluent in English, unless they are undergoing an immersion course or something, should have no reason to be pulling substitutions between their native tongue and one they only speak marginally. For me, all my substitutions occur between the languages I'm not fluent in. I've been given to understand it's part of how the brain learns languages - you have "mother tongue" and "other", and if you learn several languages they all get lumped together as "other" until you know enough for them to get their own little brain section /HALLO THAR OVERSIMPLIFICATION

/TL;DR >_> sorry I just find this stuff really interesting to think about

Yeah, I'm sure there are some things, really I *am* sorry about that. I just, I love the video more for the speech, and the way the music is set to it than the actual video context. |D

I'm glad you liked some of it? |)

I'm no longer watching The Simpsons. I've been ignoring the last... three seasons or so.

However, whenever there's a new Sideshow Bob episode? Then I'll watch. As sucky as the new seasons are, the Sideshow Bob episodes still make me laugh.

Thank you - you put in words my thoughts on this one.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree. And when people get all up in arms over the word "stupid", because it's being ableist, somehow.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
You're kind of opening up a door, there. If that's true, then men should be able to decide too, since they are always called bitches.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It's definitely happened before - I've seen people dogpiled in certain LJ communities for using words like "stupid" or "crazy". So people certainly get dogpiled for using the word "bitch".

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
All this time I was being racist by wearing a peacock feather clip in my hair and I didn't even know..

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
of course they do, don't you know that natives own birds? ALL birds? even birds on other continents? and they were clearly the first ones to do it EVAR

Well, the anon I replied to just said she gets to decide if it's sexist because she's female, not because it's used against women more or anything. So... no...?
I dunno, you'd kind of have to take it up with the anon.

...Yeah, my favorite fandom is dead, and hardly anyone else wrote my preferred pairing anyway, and now I've kind of written everything between when those characters met to a couple different alternate "up until the ends of their lives" scenarios.

I'm seriously thinking of starting over and writing AUs of my own headcanon, with them meeting in a different way and getting together in different ways and so on. Not that anyone but me wants to read them anymore anyway, but... I still want to write them. :/

So you see no point in improving as well? Because that what it sounds like.
There you go being a typical snot-nosed art student, acting like my disinterest is a problem for YOU. You're trying to make a living off it. I'm just trying to relax. The process can do that for me even if the product turns out like shit, and I appreciate having at least one thing in my life where nothing's at stake if it's not the best. Try to get out in the world a little more. There are so many skills other people have to prioritize.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It's more polite to wait for someone to say they do want critique, rather than to give it just because they never said they didn't.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you don't throw hissy fits when people tell you they aren't taking your advice.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
PS: I never said you COULDN'T draw for fun, I said I can do for fun what you do for work, but you can't do for fun what I do for work. Reading - a skill you should improve.

"Roll up on", as in, shove a dog in her face without warning. I'm happy you were able to overcome your fear - I'm assuming no one forced you to do it? That it was an effort you made in your own time, using your own personal methods, and people who cared about you were considerate of what you'd been through until then? I'd encourage any attempts my friend might make to face her fear should she so choose, but it wouldn't be appropriate for me to take it upon myself to ignore her discomfort with certain situations despite knowing how she feels.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I looked into this a while ago, because I was puzzled too.

The connotations the word has in America, mean it is a horribly misogynistic term used against women exclusively. If I were American, I would consider it a misogynistic word. The connotations it has in the UK, it isn't a misogynistic word, just an offensive term to use towards people otherwise covered by "douche" and "dick". "Twat" is very similar, but with less heat, so Americans will also lecture you on how you are horribly misogynistic and "are claiming that the UK is a magical land where sexism doesn't exist" if you use it.

The solution is to object to every single American who uses the word "spaz" online, and point out how offensive and ableist it is. I've never actually tried accusing them of pretending that America is a magical land where there is no prejudice against the disabled, because I'm not that much of a twat even when people are being terribly dense about language and culture not being American everywhere. Even when they try to claim that words are offensive purely because of their denotation in this one case.

THIS. SO MUCH.

[identity profile] dreamingrain.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yo - the Sherlock fandom may have some wank, but honestly - they're one of the most supportive fandoms I've been in. If you want an invite to AO3 so you can upload your fics there, message me - but also, don't be afraid to jump right in.

D'aww, that owl's cute ^^

That's what I felt with the lines too - that she is trying to get past Brittney because she isn't in love with Santana in return, but it's so hard to let go of love... To me it feels raw and emotional and the kind of moment that keeps me coming back to Glee even after all the other disappointments.

What the fuck does PTB mean?

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
NO.

Don't be such a fucking idiot.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't see how saying "I get called a bitch so I get to decide whether or not it's racist" could give some men the excuse to say "well -I- get called a bitch too, and I DON'T want it to be sexist, so there!"?
