I know how you feel, OP, but sometimes it's really for the best. There's always other fandoms and other characters out there for you to find and fall in love with; going back to the same well once it's started going dry really to kills your enjoyment of fandom and writing in general, or at least it did me.

I agree with this. One of the characters can be easily interpreted as albino, which affects all races, last names can be explained by intermarriage or *gasp* the very common choice of changing a last name to appear more white, which is really, really common in the US. I think Hussy tried to create a blank slate, but people jumped on him because they wanted to assume he was racist. The characters are literally- literally- white. As in the color white. The blending of all colors. Stop trying to create this idea that because you want to target the guy as racist, it automatically makes him racist.

If you haven't seen it, OP, I highly recommend trying to get your hands on the season 3 Muppet Show DVDs for the old special Jim Henson did on puppetry. He talks about making puppets and performing and historical puppets and different techniques. It's easy to say "he was just a puppeteer" but really, he was an artist. There's an episode of Great Performances about him where he's shown talking about how he could stand perfectly visible while playing Kermit, and be talking without trying to do any ventriloquism and people would still naturally talk to Kermit "because who cares about the guy with the beard?" That's art. And he was passionate about his art because it brought people joy.

That sounds like a good role model/motivational source to me.

As someone who has a real disorder, what I hate about the autism-fans is the attitude that by saying they have autism everyone should start treating them with kid gloves, or bowing to their special-ness. I'm sorry, but some of us have fought long and fucking hard not to have the world coddle us. Every "I'm an aspie, be nice to me" asshole sets the disabled rights cause back near twenty years. It's the same with the trigger warning fetishizers, we've fought not to be wrapped in cotton wool, but to be treated as equals no matter what.

So no, no I won't cut autism fans slack, or try to insulate trauma recoverer's in cotton wool. I'll treat them like any other person, because that is the equality we fought for, that is the dignity that was hard won.

Doesn't it depend on the situation? As someone who struggles with a couple of issues (which could be worse, as my family history is a hot bed of mental problems. At least I don't have severe social anxiety, epilepsy, ADHD, and am not bi-polar! Seriously, the vast majority of people in my family have been certified for these things and more. So I am relatively normal!), I never bring up my behavior as a 'excuse'. I will make it into a joke with people who notice (such as my obsessive touching every one of my finger tips in order until they 'feel' right), or mention it when giving people support if they are suffering from the same issues. In my blog I haven't mentioned my issues yet, and if I do make a post it will be to raise awareness rather than to excuse dickish behavior (because that shit don't fly).

If they are actually using it to excuse their behavior, then that is bad. Now, if they are using it as a explanation in conjunction with a apology then I don't see the bad in that, as long as it is in the form of 'it's not you, it's me'. I have had to apologize in the past for some of the things I did because of my own problems, and I will usually mention them- not to excuse or get out of anything, but to explain that it is my problem on this and I will try to do better.

So yeah. I am giving you the benefit of the doubt in that you are only talking about people who use it as a excuse. If you mean it otherwise, then saying 'no one should mention their issues ever' is frankly unrealistic and feeding into shame culture. Because people aren't perfect, and sometimes they like to get things off their chest. *shrugs*
