2. RUKIA OMGhjdhfugfwjcute, that's just adorable.

4. Screw canon, if it's good entertaining and feels IC I'll read it, alternate reality, AU, whatever, I'll read it.

I love the "what if they were in high school" stories so much, I wonder if this is why I was never interested in Harry Potter fanfic, they're in high school so why bother?.

10. I'm highly skeptical about this one.

23. I have a social phobia so I know what you're talking about, you should just be upfront about it.

Judging by that screencap you must play Horde!

I do the same thing as well, although I don't judge other players...if I see a good PvPer I always look them up in the Armory to check out their gear and how much time they've spent in that particular BG. I loathed this feature at first, but I gotta admit I've learned a ton by using it.

Nope, alliance. Screencap is from my alliance druid friend's page. :P

I PH41L at pvp (and I'm specced for raiding so evenmoreso). All my pvp factions are at neutral. :(

11. How old is this girl? Her art looks like something I might have drawn in grade school. It sure as hell isn't professional-grade, and I'm amazed she doesn't recognize that.

25. Look, ignore all the people who are telling you that this is wrong or bad, etc, etc. It's not wrong. Everyone has fetishes, and some of them can be weird or even disturbing. This doesn't mean that there's anything mentally or emotionally wrong with you. The phrase "whatever floats your boat" should be generously applied here.

I'd only suggest you get therapy if you know this is the result of some kind of trauma, or if it genuinely interferes with your having a healthy sex life. Otherwise, the only things you need help with are learning to accept your kink without guilt and finding others like you so you can have people to relate to.

(Anonymous) 2007-07-09 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Do you also say 'whatever floats your boat!' to pedophiles? I mean, hey! it's only a sexual fetish after all! And men who only get off on women screaming when they rape them?

The phrase 'whatever floats your boat' should only apply as long as other people aren't getting harmed. If fantasies start to circle around killing people and other things of violent nature, there certainly is a reason to worry. Of course in many cases these fantasies won't be acted on, but in some it happens and things get ugly for *other* people.

I'm a tolerant person, but tolerance should only go as far as reasonable thought, and should not be abused as an excuse for everything and anything.

I highly doubt people would complain about canon vs. non-canon if it weren't:
1)OOC poorly written Mary/Gary Stu crap
2)a soapbox-style lecture on how the original creator is an idiot
3)a sexual fantasy that is so painfully boring it puts the reader to sleep instead of being arousing.

Re: #4

[identity profile] hireadd.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
The point is that AU fic isn't necessarily any of those things. You get the bad stuff, obviously- but you do with canon stuff, too. And there's some damn good AU fic out there (in my fandom, anyway, though it's mixed in with a lot of crap D:).

[personal profile] scholomance 2007-07-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
ILU. I agree. D: I'm an AU writer and I LOVE IT. While canon is nice sometimes, it's fun to do AU. XD It's exciting.

[identity profile] lblikesbagels.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
11. The worst is when they're so bad and so full of it, they don't accept concrit. I mean, I've been drawing for over fifteen years and I consider myself pretty good, but I'm *always* open for concrit, especially if the person giving it is better than me.

Any good artist should recognize that.

[identity profile] levikitty.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
4. The obsession with canon is not OMG, YOU CAN'T WRITE X WITH Y BECAUSE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN IN CANON.

The obsession with canon is that it's the entire basis for your fanfiction/fanart. Even in AU. If someone's an asshole in canon, they should be an asshole in your AU, otherwise, you took away what made that character that character, unless your AU can work around it. Say, if something tragic happened in canon, if it didn't happen in your AU, then it's okay to ignore it. Any personality changes that happened to characters as a result in that AU can be ignored. If someone became depressed because a relative died in canon, you can keep that relative alive in your AU and that someone won't have to be depressed.

You don't have to follow canon exactly, but if you don't at least include some of it, you aren't writing fanfiction.

You're writing original fic that steals the names and looks of somebody else's characters, because you left out the most important aspect of them: personality.

[identity profile] meiface.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
4 Word. :)

6 OH MY GOD YES. ALSKJFLS.

[identity profile] maeda.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
4 haha, iawts. There's a difference between "shitty" and "AU", it's just that so many fics involve both that people automatically associate "AU" with "shitty", which isn't always the case.

7 Yeah, I know. I'm glad I was never in the JTHM fandom, and I have so many awesome memories from the Zim fandom, but I'd never go back now because it's overrun with stupid fucks and it seems that all of the good writers are long gone.

9 From the warnings, it sounds awfully tame. Are you saying you haven't been able to find anything kinkier in the Potter fandom? (I haven't been in it in years.) If so... I'm amazed.

10 I laughed a little at this. If it's true, then... tough shit, huh? If you were an asshole to her when she was alive, why should you feel any differently now that she's not, or were you not being genuine about your dislike, just spiteful? I hate people.

11 ... Case was right. That there is one heaping helping of pure, unadulterated delusion.

13 I'm the same way with my art.

15 Who are they?

19 This secret is awesome.

25 ... I wrote shit like that when I was eight, and it turned me on, too. My tastes are broader these days. The point is, don't feel bad. Whatever spanks your monkey.

10.

[identity profile] maeda.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
To clarify, I do understand why you would feel bad now that she's dead, it's just that that hokey saying "every day could be your last" is true, thus if you were really sorry, you should have apologized and let it go.

7 and 14: Get over it and stop being fucking crybabies. I'm sick of all the yaoi and slash bashing here. Yaoi and slash are no better or no worse than het of the same quality. Don't like yaoi? DON'T FUCKING READ IT.

(As a side note, could we classify the OMG YAOI FANGIRLS EW and no-reason-for-hating-but-it's-gay secrets as personal attacks? Not all of us who like yaoi or slash like the way most of these secrets seem gendered -like a real man couldn't like slash? Fuck off and die already- and directed alike toward the prepubescent fanbrats WE find annoying too and toward those of us who do actually care about and contribute to our fandoms in a positive way that someone else just happens to find viscerally disgusting.)

25: Please consider therapy.

[identity profile] maeda.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa, whoa, WHOA. Simmer the fuck down. 7 I understand because the slash in the JTHM fandom has never, ever been in character, and that's the problem, not the slash itself. Fourteen is because 99% of the slash fans in the Naruto fandom draw the characters, well, like that, as in they look nothing like Naruto or Sasuke. Again, that is the actual problem.

As for people always saying "slash fangirls", it's just a stupid generalization, not a personal attack.

Re: 11.

I shouldn't do this because it's mean and nasty and if this gets back to her she'll instantly know who it is, but... fuck her, she threw away years of loving friendship (we were best friends all through high school and a few years after) so she could have more time alone with Sephiroth, so:

http://yaminoeyes.deviantart.com/

She's 24. She lives with her parents. After several years of doing absolutely nothing, she's in school, but it's art college, and it doesn't seem to be improving her talent any. She's writing a comic book for a company that does not exist and has been excitedly saying "It's coming out this fall!" for five years with not a page in sigh. She has no job and except for a couple months in a fish store several years ago, she never has.

She (and her scary syncophantic boyfriend who has told me "I will not ALLOW her to give up her dreams!") still firmly believes that she will become rich and famous through her art and writing.

When she was 21 or 22, it was her actual life goal to write a script for Final Fantasy VII-2 and sell it to Square-Enix.

I do love her. I want so badly for her to turn her life around even in small ways. I don't want her to give up art and writing even if she's bad at them, if they make her happy then that's beautiful. But I want her to have a future, to have some independence. I want her to live in this world a little. I just wish my best friend would fucking grow up.

AGREED. I mean, I'm a SasuNaru fan, but not a yaoi fangirl. And also, I USED to be one of the crappy OOC fanartists - making Naruto a blushy uke and Sasuke a possessive but secretly gentle seme. EURGH. I don't think I've drawn anything vaguely romantic with them in two years. Yes, it's very clear in my fanart that I'm a fan of them as a pairing - but I know it'll never happen in canon. The only, er, "romantic" thing I've drawn was fanart for an AU fic.

And I try to draw them manly. Not girly. (My biggest pet peeve about the yaoi community...)

[identity profile] valkyriur.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 04:08 am (UTC)(link)

so...you're a woman who wants to be a man so you can be a drag queen? or maybe you want to be a drag king? i'm confused. =/

Re: 24

(Anonymous) 2007-07-09 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
I do not want to be a drag king. Drag kings are women who dress as men. For me, cross-dressing/being in drag would mean dressing as a woman. I've always felt uncomfortable and weird having to dress as a woman. It's so unnatural to me.

I'm a biologically challenged drag queen, not a drag king. Sometimes known as a faux queen, which I don't want to be.
