14 - Personally you shouldn't even use Silhouette of the Breeze as a reference for the Victorian Era. Pick up a book and learn about it, or even watch the History channel.

11. Misa is so much ♥!

15. Go for it! and THANK YOU. Shinn really does'nt deserve all the hate he gets ;__;!

People keep ragging on him for being emo, but the dude is justifiably angry, IMO, and, Hell, if Jesus Yamato kept cheesing out of death again and again, I'd be pretty pissed, too.

11. I love Misa, actually. :3 Then again I don't dislike very many in Death Note at all. Great characterization it has.

19 & 21

God, I couldn't agree more. I came to fandom for the fun--drawing, writing, and looking at other people's drawings and stories. I stayed for the wank.

Then I realized how stupid and petty and shitty the wank was. People spending hours being furious over how everybody plays with their imaginary fantasies for fun. It's like the little playground pissant telling you that Michaelangelo says cowabunga, April O'Neil doesn't dooo that, and now you've ruined everything and the awesome ninja turtle game has to come to a big stop.

I still like the actual art of fandom, but i just can't play in the communities much anymore.

(Well, except for this one and sometimes fanficrants, because my secret is that I do kind of like the wank. Sometimes. A little.)

6. That's a damn good analogy, and I'm glad you've come to that conclusion. I personally dislike people who feel themselves above fandoms and laugh with the idea that they're on the outside, since it's true--they're just as much a part of the craziness as everyone else.

19. I dunno if you're only referring to people who get into petty arguments or BNFs, but... when you're old and grey, what's going to matter is not whether or not you had a "real" life or not but whether or not you're happy with the life you had. And if being into fandom in general (not in the elitist bitch way) makes someone happier than walking around the neighborhood and enjoying the "outside world"? Then yeah, they should stick with fandom instead of trying to conform to someone else's idea of "normal."

Of course, if you get bored with fandom and decide to leave it for things that seem more fulfilling, all the power to you in that case as well. I just don't think people should dictate what should be "real" to people who might have a completely different definition of it.

21. The way I heard it, the porn artist only did the trades in OTHER forums then the Creators. Ones that did allow graphic art. And then got slandered for 'Omg porn on the internet!'

(Anonymous) 2007-07-11 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
He still did at least one porn request that I know of for a teenage girl, drawing her OC having sex with Danny. I think what happened after was ridiculous, the whole Truie movement, but if I saw that someone in a forum I was running was doing that, even if it was somewhere else, and I was pretty sure it was the same person, I'd sure as hell boot them off my forum.

And I kind of can't understand why people would support someone like that. Not that I think that the whole Truie movement is any better, but some of the the Antis lost a lot of their "this is all harmless" credibility by supporting that loser.

I like slash, I like pr0n, but when you get to older dudes giving porn to teenage girls in RL, you've lost me. Especially with that one guy who's friends with him that's been tricking teenage girls into giving him their addresses, saying he'll send them the series on DVD for 20 bucks...

...and also sending pics of his wang.

Sorry. Hate the Truies, but can't really get behind some of the Antis either. I'll stay over here in the moderate "I'm staying away from all the crazies" section, and also writing the characters IC. Which most of the Antis don't.

6. That's deep.

9. Eh, I haven't even looked at her page yet, but letting the critics drive her away like that? That seems a little thin-skinned to me.

10. I don't know if I want Harry to die necessarily, but I do think he will die in DH. I think J.K. is setting him up for a noble sacrifice of some sort.

13. IAWTS! I love Hina and hopefully we'll see more of her, cured of the brainwashing and back to kicking ass, after this current story arc.

14. You kinda got jumped on by the fangirls for this. ._. Ah, it happens. I've only read AS (and didn't care for it) so I can't really compare the two series. BUT. I absolutely LOVE Emma. The art was beautiful (the backgrounds! Such attention to detail!), the characters were great (even though William was an ass during that one part of the series I still wanted those crazy kids to get together *_*), it was just so...perfect.

2. Oh man, seriously? I never finished that game. Finding out Certain Events annoyed me too much.

4. I wish I could agree whole-heartedly, but I'm biased :/ I just... anime style seems a lot more shallow. Like. I'm not moved by skinny bishounen with bedroom eyes or a big-boobed chick giving a peace sign. I like the art, I enjoy it, I collect pics on my computer - but it's really rare when I see something that's really striking. It's not something I want framed on my wall, or something I can marvel over brushstrokes.

7. I'm glad it wasn't.

13. She's not my favorite, but I like her. I don't think she's weak at all D: ...hitsugaya's the boring one.

14. Eh, the art style on the right looks pretty boring...

20. What pairing is that?

re: 4

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Peeeersonally, I think you're addressing a stereotypical anime artstyle and forgettingthere are THOUSANDS of different styles just like there are thousands in western cartoon. A lot of shounen series are varied and diverse, take for instance Blade of the Immortal or any handful of shounen series to date.

But that's neither here nor there. You can by all means be biased against anime. But whether you think its shallow or not, I don't think it matters because anime shouldn't be considered any less of an artform, since it's still an artform. I mean, I never ever want to hang up cartoons that look crude like Ren and Stimpy on my wall. But does that make it any less meaningful as art? No. It's still art. It's just not art I like.

When I'm old and gray, people are going to matter. What I've created is going to matter. And even if those people are friends rather than family, and even if what I've created is nothing but fanfiction, even if I never break into original work (which I'm trying to do at the same time), I'll look back on it with pride. Not with sadness, because I'd rather look back on something "insignificant" I wanted rather than something "normal" and "significant" I didn't want. Not everyone wants what you consider a "real life."

I also find it telling that you're basically calling anyone who doesn't meet your standard of "real life" pathetic. Which is really sad, since one doesn't have to give up fandom to have a real life.

As a matter of fact, I *got* my real life through fandom: I've met friends online who I'm going to, someday, hang out with in real life, including my best friend. My decision to go into journalism as a career is from thinking, back in 2004, "hey, if I can write about fictional characters, I can write with facts about reality and real people." I've expanded my mind, learned so much more about my world and about people both through my friends and through the research "getting it right" demanded for me. Fandom has, in so many ways, opened my horizons, helped me to come to terms with who I was, and has been a lot cheaper than therapy or vision quests or midlife crises or whatever most normal people go for for this kind of thing.

I am thinking twenty years along the road. I may well be a published writer in some context, even if it is just as a newspaper or magazine reporter. I will, most likely, be in a relationship with someone I care about and be comfortable in my body. I'll have friends and a way of always having a chance to make new friends as well as keep in contact with my old. All the while, I'll probably still be writing fic or doing art for something, still hanging around at conventions (who knows, maybe if I do hit it big with my originals, maybe signing stuff for the next generation of us ~_^) and you know what? I'll be happy. Maybe not normal, definitely not normal, but I'll have a life I like, and that's what matters.

Characters? Fanfic? That's how I've met real people who mean the world to me. That's how I stepped outside a social box that would have, in the end, happily killed me, and found a society that, while it may be crazy and filled with trolls and wank and idiocy, has a lot of people who *aren't* bad and will accept me as I am.

I'll spare you my thoughts on yaoi for now, but if you're seriously telling me that yaoi is somehow destructive to having a real life, I have two words for you. Bitch, please.

Besides, I'd rather read about/see a couple of hot fictional guys doing it than give it all up solely to impress a "real man." I mostly prefer women, and if someone is so insecure they think my writing yaoi is tantamount to cheating or a sign I'm going to abandon them? I'd like someone a little stronger and more self-confident and less controlling please.

Unlike you seem to think, I don't think I'm "all that." I DO think fandom could do with a lot less nastiness and wankery and trolling and whatnot, it could be a much nicer place, but that starts with each person. I can be nice to my friends, try not to engage with my enemies, and the rest of us could all do the same.

And I have tried "real life." My entire childhood and adolescence was "real life," and I didn't even get into fandom until I was 18. I'd rather have real life along with fandom, myself. It's not like they're contradictory options. ^_^

Re: 19

(Anonymous) 2007-07-11 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I think you took what I said way too seriously.

The secret is actually directed towards people who are so involved in fandom that they stunt their personal growth because they don't want to extend themselves into the real world. Since it's apparent that you have done so, the secret wouldn't be directed towards you, while I can see how you're taking offense.

There are a lot of people in fandom who think that fandom is their life, to the point where they ignore the possibilities outside of it. If you can pair both of them up (real life and fandom) and enjoy them together, then that's even better for you. I'm glad that you've been able to do that (and I don't say that with any amount of sarcasm, either!).

14. I admit, I enjoy Godchild but not because of any accuracy to actual Victorian society. It's fiction, it's fake, who the hell cares? The designs are pretty and interesting, at least to me, though I can see how they could be ugly as well, but... yeah. Victorian Romance Emma had it's own charm and beauty, and I really want to complete it someday. It has it's own place, while Godchild has it's own.

Expecting manga/anime/any series whatsoever to follow accurate historic details would be like wanting to watch the History Channel all the time. What WOULD worry me, is if people actually think that those manga are realistic portrayals of that time period. *dies* That WOULD require a History Channel viewing, wouldn't it.

Er, yeah, this post had a point somewhere. /ramble

14 People are stupid to be using it as a reference, but I didn't read it for the quality of the historical accuracy... and I actually really like Kaori Yuki's artwork. Sorry.

The one you pointed out looks interesting, though.

Personally I think someday I'm going to look back and realize these were the best years of my life. Chatting with friends every day, spending all my free time stretching my creative muscles, organizing meetups and traveling around the country going to conventions... what's better than that? Sitting stuck in some house with a mortgage, a soul-crushing career and half a dozen needy kids? Nuh-uh.

I don't care who thinks that makes me a loser. I feel free. I'm having fun and doing things I feel are meaningful. What's wrong with that?

Re: 19

(Anonymous) 2007-07-11 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on how you look at it. The secret itself was more directed towards people who aren't interested in doing anything with themselves beyond just immersing themselves in fandom. Some people honestly stunt their own growth just by refusing to step outside their houses to try something new. Everyone is different.

I think it's more rewarding to step outside of fandom and meet new people and experience new things (especially if fandom is holding you down, as I indicated in the secret). Sometimes the greatest situations in someone's life can happen outside of sitting at the computer and chatting with people. But if you can pair the both of them up (fandom and RL), then more power to you. Some people can't do that, and they end up glued to their computer seat, letting all of their time drain away uselessly. That is more of what the secret is about. And if fandom isn't holding you down, then it's totally fine in my opinion to enjoy it.

19. I like my fandom friends better than I like anyone at my godforsaken college (which I'm probably not going to get a degree from, anyway) or my godforsaken job. Fandom at least gives me something to do and people to talk to, because I'm not really all that big on the whole "people and society" thing. Fandom and the internet in general keep me from being totally isolated. It's not like I never go outside, because I do, but I'm mostly a solitary person (I can count my RL friends outside of my family on one finger).
