Eh, I'm one of those people who always watches fandoms, but often a fandom isn't equivalent to its show. I don't know what this one is like, but there's nothing wrong with staying out of it. And it's good that you've found something that helps you.

Look, if you can find a friend or another writer to give you concrit, and the stuff they tell you is useful then I think that's great. But, honestly, it's not the job of your readers to make you a better writer. You need to handle that on your own. Take a writing class or read some books if you feel like you need some instruction. Join an online writing group. Ask for people to give you constructive criticism. But be aware that most readers aren't editors (nor should they be) and might not have much of use to tell you.

...I'm like that with a lot of series/authors I like. I always feel like it makes me a bit of a bad fan for preferring the fandom (and in some cases, fic if there is any) over the 'real' works. And...then I stop feeling bad. which paradoxically, I then feel guilty about. lolwut

I don't really think it's insulting to say someone looks like a man. Or mannish. Or masculine. It's just an observation. Of course, if the person people are talking about comes out and says that they feel insulted by it then that's different. But why does everyone assume when people make a comment about her masculine features that it's an insult? I think she's very masculine and pretty.

IDK about the whole fandom, but a lot of the 'con fans scare the crap out of me. I mean, they think the 'cons are sexy no matter who they kill but when a 'bot loses his temper and beats the scrap out of one of them we should all feel sorry for the 'con and the 'bot has failed morality forever.

I like Mai. I never really understood why people hated her, maybe it was because people often wanted Zuko with Katara and they took out their frustration on Mai. Either way, it's okay to dislike characters! Hopefully it's for the right reasons, though.

Same here, anon. I mean it's one thing to be an ass, but I don't get why it's suddenly a crime to give someone polite constructive criticism. If they don't want it, they can ignore it. I like getting concrit (one of my favorite reviews constantly points out grammatical errors in my stories). I think if you choose to put your work on display, you run the risk of getting negative comments on it. As long as the people are doing so politely, I don't think there is anything wrong.
