[Bones]

[identity profile] piratesswoop.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Bones wasn't childfree? I seem to remember her mentioning at least two or three seasons ago that she eventually wanted to have kids to pass on her genius or something like that. I mean, it's not like the show is now exclusively about Christine. They're still finding bodies and the other characters still have storylines (liked the one with Cam and her daughter, and Hodgins and his lab toys)

Bones had talked about wanting to have a baby at least once before she actually got pregnant. And she'd even mentioned that Booth would be a good father (both genetically and otherwise). So she didn't just "accept her pregnancy" out of nowhere, they'd already established she kind of wanted to have a baby anyway.

This. It just doesn't fit her character, imo. I think adoption would have been a much realistic route for Bones to take.

It wasn't OOC for Bones because she stated she wanted to have a kid prior, but I personally dislike how the show has handled it. I kinda preferred when it wasn't BABIES EVER AFTER FOR EVERYONE.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
If you really would have preferred that they cancel the show, you could just stop watching - if it bothers you that much.

[identity profile] hbruton.livejournal.com 2012-05-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I certainly stopped watching once the baby plotline started. I hung on after they screwed up Zach's character but the pregnancy plot line was too much. Kids always seem to ruin a show for me. Looks like I got out while the getting out was good.

Is it career or barefoot?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
What everyone else is saying; Bones wanted a kid before. I remember the whole plot when we all thought it was gonna happen because she was looking at Booth for her baby-daddy. So that's totally IC I think. And I don't think that too much time is devoted to the baby.

I just hate how boring it's become. They drew it out too long, and now that they're together, they can't explore very many relationship storylines. Ditto with most other couples in the show. Throwing kids into the mix makes it a lot harder to write good, emotional, intense stories. The exception was the other week's story with Parker, I though.

It is a melancholy object to those who flip through every channel in the country, when they see HBO, FOX, NBC, CSN, Hulu and LifeTime, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed by three, four, or six children (whatever entices the most drama), all in rags and importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers, instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants.

It is true, a child just dropped from its dam may be supported by her milk for a solar year, with little other nourishment; at most not above the value of 2 shillings, which the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old that I propose to provide for them in such a manner as instead of being a charge upon their parents or the parish, or wanting food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall on the contrary contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing, of many thousands.

There is likewise another great advantage in my scheme, that it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their unwanted Cousin Olivers, alas! too frequent among us! sacrificing the poor innocent babes I doubt more to avoid the aborted wank than the baby drama, which would move tears and pity in the most savage and inhuman online community.

I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance online, that a young healthy child well nursed is at a year old a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome food, whether stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a fricassee or a ragout...

Infant's flesh will be in season throughout the year, but more plentiful in March, and a little before and after, in time for the summer rush of new shows, renewals, and cliffhangers.

A Modest Television Pitch

I'm not childfree (as my kids will attest) but I totally agree. Somehow this show has morphed from something that was 85 % mystery / 15% office shennigans. Now it's 40% mystery, 60 % soap-opera. I honestly don't mind that Bones got pregnant or had a kid. I hate that they turned her into momzilla.

It drives me even more nuts that no one on the show can get through a goddamn sentence about the case without it somehow turning into a discussion about someone's kid, dad, girlfriend, date, whatever domestic thing they have going on. Just... just go back to shooting chickens out of canons for the amusing humanizing counterpoint to the grossness.

A dead baby is not the same as a baby that never existed. If the kid does die, it'll just become a show about them mourning their dead kid and dealing with the emotional trauma of losing her.

Would be nice to have more shows where people just didn't want to have kids and didn't change their mind about it. It's not that weird that it happened here, it just almost always happens and shameful as it is, it's hard for me to relate to characters who have kids or want them- I just really cannot see my life going that way and it's a little baffling!

I know people are saying she wanted kids, and I did foresee this but I hate that her position has slowly shifted toward Booth's, but his hasn't shifted towards her. That's what annoys me about this. Brennen's changed, but Booth hasn't at all. He still the moral center and ugh, so I stopped watching.

I didn't mind Bones getting pregnant, because it's been obvious for a while that she has feelings for Booth and she went through the whole phase of wanting his baby because it would (genes-wise) be 'the best baby ever'.

My problem is the jump from last season to this season. Last season ended with her getting pregnant. Going into this season, I'm thinking 'So they'll be using this season to develop their relationship, going from partners and friends to a budding romance with a baby on the way; this is going to be fun to watch!' Then the season started and they're already living together, kissing and sharing a bed, with no development at all.

We went from zero to sixty in fives seconds flat, I still have whiplash from it! If the writers had actually given the two the time to develop their new relationship, then I'd be perfectly happy. This sudden speed however I am not happy with. I'm still watching it but it bothers me with each passing episode. When I heard it was getting another season, my reaction was not one of joy but of 'Oh man, I have to watch another season of this?'

That's kind of harsh. It's fine if you don't like baby plotlines but wishing the kid would end up dead seems a bit extreme.

She wasn't childfree. She wanted a child and furthermore she wanted Booth's child. Yes in the early seasons she was hesitant about ever doing it and uncomfortable around kids, but her character has evolved with each season and some women do decide that they want a baby after vehemently being opposed to the idea at one time.

I love that the show had her keep Christine. I love that she's now kick-ass awesome AND human. I really fucking hate the stereotype that a woman has a baby and suddenly stays home and loses her identity and all her awesome credits. The baby hasn't taken over every detail of the show and Bones is still kicking ass and taking names and putting bad guys behind bars. There's still just as much drama and interpersonal relationships and science and, yes, dead bodies.

You aren't being entirely fair. Three seasons ago it was established that she did in fact want a baby. She almost got AI'd with Booth's sperm, and only backed out when he had to go in for the brain surgery. She didn't accept getting pregnant out of the blue, it was something she had wanted and put on hold.

Just because a fictional character has a baby doesn't mean you have to if you don't want to, Op. Some people like babies. Get the fuck over it.

She wanted a kid with Booth in season 4, and even if in the early seasons she didn't want any, there ARE some people who do change their minds, people. And even though I do agree that there needs to be more child-free representation in media, Bones didn't necessarily have to be it.

I think her whole thing, at first, was just her fear that she'd maybe do what her parents did and she never wanted to run the risk of abandoning a child like she was. But she's learned to trust more and even, finally, realize that "love" isn't something bad. She's grown as a character and finally decided a family wasn't so bad. And she's gonna be an awesome mom.

SOME people do do that. Some don't. That's life.

Hell, that kid she ended up being around that someone else mentioned and she uneasy about being around it? She did end up warming up to said kid and even played with him. "Dancing phalanges" anyone? Cutest thing ever~

Also, the most we even SEE of her and her family are usually at the beginning or at the end of the episode. This latest episode (with christine anyway, not last nights about the movie) was more centered around the kid because she, rightfully, had reservations about her dad taking care of Christine when she couldn't. Some childhood happenstances stay with a person and it's hard to move past the mistrust she has in her father, even if he is doing his damnedest to be there, now, for his daughter and granddaughter.

But other than that? Shes till being bad ass at her work place and solving cases and being "Bones" as she's always been.

Anywho, I'm happy with how Bones is going, even if I had reservations about the pregnancy. She's still Bones and still teh awesome character I've grown to love these last 7 years.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-09 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Does being "childfree' mean they have to hate babies? Because there are plenty of shows with female characters that don't have kids. They just don't sit around complaining about people that do.

[identity profile] eastcoastfilly.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
They should've handled this soap opera style. Send the kid away for a little while, then have them come back when they're old enough to be interesting. Just recently, a ten-year-old on one of my mom's soaps went to visit relatives for "three months" and came back a decade older! They could probably get away with it, they've gotten away with stupider things on prime time TV.

Babies and toddlers are just boring, yet as soon as they're introduced, they end up getting more attention than they really ought to get. She's only been around a few episodes and I'm already tired of her. The idea of a mini-Bones making her way through the school system, driving teachers crazy, on the other hand...Now that would be worth watching. But at this rate, the show isn't going to last the two or three more season it's going to take to get to that point.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-09 08:10 am (UTC)(link)
You are a horrible person.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2012-05-09 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel this way too, but Bones was never childfree, no matter how much I wish it so. I loathe the direction the show has taken; stopped watching months ago. I hate what happened to the character, I dislike baby-plots, and though I'm vaguely happy for Bones' actress I think the pregnancy could've been handled so much better.
