I'm not in the new fandom but I used to be in the collecting community back in the early 2000s. Sad to hear that the new fandom isn't, er, as good as it could be.

Considering the show and franchise was originally meant for girls... it's really strange to see how aggressive this fandom can be towards female fans. I guess it's because some of the bronies think that "Yeah, this is a GUY'S show, we make up 90% of the demographic now, what of it, GIRLS?" Not all of the bronies are like this (many I know are really nice towards both genders), but I've seen a few bad cases. Some people just ruin it for everyone.

Agreed. It's already enough that so many men co-opted the show from girls, but they gloat about it. It's fine if you like it, I don't care. But liking a show is not anything to be proud of. Women are frequently berated in this fandom. Even the name "bronies" excludes them. And although they aren't as loud as many people, there are the creepy people that fetishize the ponies. This stuff happens in every fandom, but considering it's a show for young girls, it's disgusting. I like the show, and I'm glad people of every age can enjoy it. But not when stuff like that happens.

Pretty much agreed. The "bronies" actively try to drive women and girls away from the fandom, claiming it "belongs to them," that they're "the audience," that MLP:FiM is a "manly" thing to like because guys like it and heaven forbid girls like it, being actively incredibly sexist, threatening r*pe and death on women who displease them in the fandom...

Yeah, basically all would be well if bronies just ceased to exist in the fandom. I hate them. Haaate.

It may be the worst one you have seen, but it's by far not the worst one out there.

However, I agree. There are plenty of Pony fans who are awesome, but there are a LOT more that are abelist, misogynist asspails and if you try to call them on it, they come at you shrieking how loving and tolerant they are, and you're just oversensitive, and so on.

Eeh, I'm hesitant to say that any fandom is 'The Worst' just because there's always something worse out there (It's the internet) but I think all can agree that the bronies get an honorable mention and top-ten status.

Agreed. I've been in fandom for years and NONE of them have ever been such a awful, disgusting pits of sexism (AND racism, AND transphobia, AND ableism, AND etc etc...) as the my little pony fandom. Or they probably have been, but this one is so much more obvious about it because it's such a fucking hugbox for cis straight white men who don't like getting their feefees hurt when women, POCs and others call them out the disgusting bigoted shit they say on a daily basis.

Unfortunately true. Some of the people who call themselves fans are the most bigoted assholes I've seen. But that's why I like to just watch the show and keep my fan interaction limited to the decent fans out there.

I havn't even watched a single episode of the show, And I have never actively sought to find out information about it,
yet SOMEHOW I still know the names of nearly every single character. Just being on the interenet has made me absorb this show through osmosis, I feel violated.

I remember nearly two years ago when FIM just started, there were some very naive people who seemed to think that guys liking MLP would be the end of sexism. Obviously, that worked out as well as the election of Barack Obama being the end of racism.

Let's turn this into something positive.

Let's start a recommendation list of "chill" MLP:FiM places and communities for grown-ups. Places where sex and gender aren't an issue, where it's just about pony-ish love for people age 16 and up. If you know of such places, post the site's URL here along with a little bit of your experiences on that site. And please, no replying to someone's rec with negatives about how "I went there one time and everyone was the devil". Just... positive experiences so that O.P can have some options for nice places where people are helpful and chatty.

I was surprised at how chill and kind and silly the posters here are. There are one or two weird-o's but they get largely ignored/treated with an "oh, you big silly". Discussions are, of course, centered around the picture-in-question beneath the comments, but in my experience, the most antagonism I've seen is "Us against the people who make fun of us" if and when antagonism comes up. Most of the time? It's all about the LOLs and the ponies and fun (which a fandom ought to be about, yeah?)

I'm sorry your experience has been so terrible. :C I hope you can still enjoy the show, and maybe find a chill group of friends/a drama-free comm to hang with. Personally I just stick to the Equestria Daily feed and branch out from there.
