1. Were you honestly expecting gay characters in a Nickelodeon show?

I guess not, but it would've been great. Besides, it does seem to sell itself off as a more mature cartoon series, so a part of me wouldn't think of it as that much of a stretch.

If it was on a different channel, maybe. But it's nickelodeon and they wouldn't risk that kind of backlash from crazy parents. The creators of the actual show might be up for it though.

A murder suicide on a kid's show? Totally fine. But apparently having gay people is just too risque for some parents.

Your last sentence so freaking much. IRL where I live parents who had a daughter on a local baseball team tried to get a gay couple banned from attending the gay couple's own daughter's practices. Thankfully the other parents shot them down and suggested Mr. & Mrs. Homophobia didn't attend practices if they had so much trouble with it. Mr. & Mrs. Homophobia got in trouble with deputies recently for letting their son have a "Fight Club" in their garage where a kid got seriously hurt. Family values for the win.

It's really not. The heaviest issue at present is a very convoluted and distressing oppression of minorities and those minorities taking the fight too far.

Man, I am just not getting this show. I couldn't get into the first one, and though this does stand a better chance of being more interesting, I can't seem to get excited about this one. I feel like such a black sheep for not, well, being enthusiastic about the series as a whole.

and even with that they can't deal with properly. I mean in the end the average non-benders are ignored and we get only the extremists vs. the benders and in that scenario the benders are always the good ones. We don't even get to see the reasons why people decided to join the equalists, they tried to make them less black and more grey but I think they failed pretty epcially at that.

Even the newest Thundercats handled the oppressors/minorities issues better.

My experience with Korra is that they're trying to balance it between a kids/young teenagers show and an adult show. So far they fail rather epically in my opinion. I like the show but I always notice how they switch their way they tell the story or treat characters so yeah it can't decide yet.

It's a Nickelodeon show. They're going to be doing everything they can not to get cancelled for non-"family friendly" entertainment. Fandom isn't anything like the OP. One of the most popular pairings is femmslash.

There have been more than a few cartoon characters confirmed as gay by the creators...usually after the show finishes airing. And their sexuality is never really shown in the actual show. It's very different from having a character actually be shown romantically involved with someone of the same sex in show.

Actually acknowledged in show before it was already complete and the creator no longer had to hold his tongue? Not so much.

Not saying there weren't hints, but he'd never have introduced that guy as his boyfriend.
