I'm not judging her for making money off of her fanfic; objectively, it's genius from a business perspective. I'm just sad she didn't seem to have any interest in bettering her craft. It's obvious those books didn't have editors go anywhere NEAR them. If I were going to write a "sellout" novel to make money, I would at least try to make it as well-written as I could.

But I still have to say I find the whole "You're one of us regardless of whether you say so!" thing totally bizarre.

Eh, I think it's more bizarre that anyone would object to it. I mean... why, other than bad connotations?
Besides, it's often used as a wake-up call for the people who go "Ew feminists", not to literally label them. It's used to tell people "If you believe women and men should be treated equal, you're a feminist. That's it, no obligation to march or burn bras".
I mean, if you're (general you) that worried, nobody can "force" you to accept that term, right? It has no weight when a feminist calls you a feminist if you're that much against it, so I don't understand why it's supposed to be such a horrible thing either.

+1

I was literally about to post this exact comment.

I believe all people are equal and equally deserving of life, liberty, and other basic rights and of being treated with respect and that it's ok to be who you are and like what you like.

Except when you want an abortion. *snort*

Yes, this is what f!s is about: hugs and congratulations. It's the perfect place to evaluate your idea of feminism.

Rolling my eyes super hard here.

I am a straight guy, though that doesn't mean I'm entirely devoid of slash ships.

I am a homestuck after all.

OP

Defenders, some time around #136 I think. He behaved completely inappropriately when they were mourning Kyle and Barbara. It wasn't actually the funeral for either of them, but they were all standing around at Strange's place absolutely mortified and in shock, trading stories of how awesome their teammates were, and Spiderman was (too young to get it, too young to get it) just being a dick about everything.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
OP would feel more capable of this if depressed friend had ever displayed the slightest bit of interest, fake or otherwise, in anything she's interested in in the last fifteen years of 'friendship.' I'm OP and I'm tired.

OP

They're not the oldest comics, and they're mostly from a pretty specific time range circa 1975. It's also a little while since I read them all. But I remember him being a dick every time he showed up in Defenders, a show-stealing dick in Howard the Duck, and I think also a dick in some Fantastic Four somewhere along the line? DD only came up in the stack I worked through once or twice, so if they got on okay I missed it. I seem to recall Hulk disliking him though, and he's usually a pretty good judge of character. :P

IDK. I grew up watching the Spiderman series from the 90s, and I read the newspaper adaptation when I was a little girl. I had plenty of opportunity to like him, but unlike X-Men, I felt too old for him after a while, if you see what I mean. I'm not even slightly judging you for enjoying him, now or ever, but I found him too self-consciously written as young to identify with him after the age of about - got to be honest here - seven or so, and he's obviously written to be relatable (unlike, say, Strange or Vision or someone spacey and fun to read). He lost a lot of appeal to me when I started seeing him as this snarky youngster. Considering it was another few years before I stopped getting much out of The Beano, that says a lot about how he came off to me. He just seems really judgemental and quick to react, even compared to famously conclusion-jumping characters. Like Cyclops - at least to my mind - can be like that, but he seems far more likely to be called on his bullshit because he works in ensemble comics.

Girls CAN'T be misogynist but they internalize misogyny. It's like saying Black people can be racist with Black people.

But these girls grow up in a society that consistently tells them that they are worthless, so I am not surprised some internalize that hate and foster on each other.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, and why do you want to like them? You don't have to, you know?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think it only became an obsession because she did it once, and then had to stand by her previous actions for hundreds and hundreds of timelines, or everything she'd done up until then would have been pointless. To a very great extent, I think it had stopped being about Madoka as a person. It was Homura's attempt at fighting the universe which had done this to them both.

Thirded. If people didn't get so bloody invested they'd remember how to have fun and ignore the weirdos.

My girlfriend figured he knew, which I didn't notice, but now I agree and think they were both talking each other down through the whole scene and knew exactly what was going to happen. Which for me made it rather beautiful, and no more comments about people's tastes for goodness sake as I read plenty of interesting and/or sad literature.

I thought the gay in Homestuck was canon?

This.

I love the fact that we can have a kickass female space marine as a main character, and even the option for a cover on the box,
but there's nothing wrong with liking Sheploo.

OP

bloohoohoo, I wilL TRY if she asks me to go. (If she doesn't, I'm going to pretend it never happened.) But thanks for the compliment - I'm still not completely satisfied with how the secret came out, but considering how many elements I was trying to fit into the space, it certainly could have been worse! ;) It was fun trying to find pictures for the six heroes at the bottom which used a similar style (poor Red Guardian, the internet hardly knew ye).

OP

It'll be several hours of my life and I have severe issues with coping with noise around me when I'm trying to concentrate so I find cinemas really difficult anyway, and the whole time I know I'll be resenting the film for not being about an interesting hero, judging the hell out of everyone around me for not having better taste, being angry with my friend for not branching out and picking an interesting damn hero to enjoy, and thinking about what else I could have done with a couple of hours away from work.

tl;dr don't often watch films; would rather read or fuck.

AYRT

No it won't - a) I suck as a fic writer and b) the ending was too perfect as it was to mess it up with aftermath fic. I don't need to write about them getting down off the mountain - I know they do because they were found in last few minutes of the episode.

Re: Are you an only child?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Not an only child, but my brother and I tried to pick films that both of us would enjoy, and when it was one that one of us would get a lot more out of than the other, the one who didn't enjoy it much would get to pick the next time. My depessed friend won't even give things a try. I know that I actively dislike Spider-Man - and I think I probably know him better than her - but she loves vampires and won't give Hellsing a try, adores Tomb Raider and won't try Uncharted, and despite claiming to like good films, made me watch three Indiana Jones films and then TALKED ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE LONGEST YARD. If she didn't pick it apparently it can't be interesting. Which wouldn't bug me so much if her interests hadn't atrophied some time around 2002.

I just kind of hated how HUMANITY COULD NEVER HAVE DONE ANYTHING EVER without the magical girls. That made me eyeroll a bit, and probably contributed to my ultimate slight disappointment in the series. I guess I wish the ending had been cleverer or something.
