Try N.K. Jemisin's Inheritance trilogy. One of the narrator/protagonists is a pretty damn BAMF blind female.

Toph, obviously, is the most BAMF of all BAMF blind females.

Except that if you're pro-choice you're not 'anti-life.' All that being pro-choice means is that you respect women's bodily autonomy and right to choose whether or not they want to be an incubator for an unborn baby.

If you're 'pro-life' that means you are against women's ability to choose what happens in their body, ie you are anti-choice.

It's really simple. Stop trying to make false equivalencies.

Lol, the only person implying they're male, Republican or Christian because they're anti-choice is you.

I love reading the Encyclopedia Dramatica entries about DeviantArt drama. They're always so hilarious.

Yes and no. Homestucks got a large cast. And while there are some characters who are established for liking others of the same sex, there are no current canon sexual relationships in the main cast. A good chunk of the cast is also aliens who's reproduction is so different they don't even understand the concept of having a sexual preference based on gender, making a culture that is effectively bisexual.

So we ship. MxM, MxF, FxF and of course, all the ot3's. We ship often and hard. Sometimes with blatantly contradictory ships sailing from the same port.

One of the alien characters kinda mocks this by being obsessed with shipping, literally drawing a gigantic shipping wall to keep up with her preferences regarding her friends.

She writes it with chalk and blood from things she killed.

I think Hussie was saying something about his observation of the fandom with Nepeta (Also, she's from the "Troll" species, and each of them embodies something about the internet)

I think when she says "feminist", what she is referring to is the type of radical feminism that doesn't just want equality, but superiority. But idk, I can only speculate. There is a lot of misinformation and etc. surrounding the term 'feminism'.

Totally agree with this. This reminds me a LOT of people telling me things like, "WELL UNLESS YOU _________, YOU ARE NOT BISEXUAL". Like, I'm pretty sure I have every right to identify myself with whatever labels I want, and you do not have the right to tell me it is wrong.

Well said! I also loved the ending, so you're preaching to the choir here, but I think you covered all of the relevant points thoughtfully and concisely.

I think it's really, really, really inappropriate and wrong to suggest that a person being discriminated against is only ever experiencing it because the root issue is hatred towards women, not hatred towards sexuality, race, religion, etc. Like, I'm PRETTY sure that some asshole calling my dad a nigger and saying that he should go back to Africa to chase gazelles has nothing to do with women (though I noticed that you purposely avoided this topic, I suppose because you couldn't think of a reason why being racist against a person of color is ACTUALLY just being sexist against a woman in a really clever disguise). I feel like you're suggesting that peoples' experiences with discrimination are just plain incorrect and, really, why should a gay person be fighting for gay rights? They should REALLY be fighting for womens' rights and then all of their problems will go away!

Ever heard of a little thing called 'intersectionality' before? The Plight of Women =/= the plight of every single minority group ever.

Okay, but do you understand that it's possible to be pro-life and also pro-choice at the same time?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP here but I totally understand where she's coming from.

I don't see it on F!S so much but other communities like ontd_political are explicitly man-hating. There was a clusterfuck of a post not too long ago in a post where the article was shaming bisexual women for having sex with men, saying that if they were good feminists they'd give up having relationships with males entirely.

It degenerated quickly into statements like "Men are the enemy" (actual quote), understandably upset bisexuals and pansexuals stating that they should be able to have liaisons with whoever they like without being seen as 'traitors to the cause' and other general fuckery.

If "Men are the enemy" is not anti-man then I don't know what is, and the sad thing is that these opinions aren't even the minority.

Why don't you just... not goto this movie? It sounds like there is no way you'll have a good time even if it ends up better then you thought.

I get we do things for friends, but there is that and there is making yourself fucking miserable for no good reason. Meet up with her after the movie and do something else, christ. You'll both have more fun if your not a in a shitty mood the entire time, which this movie seems fated to put you in.

Re: Are you an only child?

Assuming she ever gets it together. I think you need to reevauate this friendship, before you end it... and not in a dignified way, but a screaming rant she might never have seen coming cause she obviously isn't picking up on all of this. Being there for her doesn't mean you hide your feelings on everything.

Also, while a Heroes for Hire movie would be awesome, I'd hope Iron Fist and Power Man got their own movies first. Hell, Iron Fist's Cities of Heaven Tournament could probably be a great triology if done as a follow up once the characters were introduced.

I really want to see a live action bride of nine spiders fight. I won't lie.

2 women having a 30 second conversation about shoes would pass... not exactly useful overall.

yeah, but i'm betting most writers, producers and directors would rather not waste even those 30 seconds. in crowded ensemble movies like the avengers, for instance, 30 secs is a whole fucking lot. if writers had to pass the test, i'm betting at least some of them would end up figuring out that women can chat about stuff useful to the plot as well - ~CRAZY, i know.

you'd kinda lose out on stories that historically are male-centric.

... and there's such a dearth of those, right? so rare. but fine, this fictional rule of mine can have historical/situational exceptions.

....Uh. It's not exactly homophobic to not want to read a comic about guys hooking up if you aren't into that. There are plenty of reasons that aren't homophobia to not want to read BL. Yeah, guys whose reaction to m/m stuff is "OMG EW GUYS KISSING!!!11" are kind of disgusting people IMO, but uh. Not everyone is interested in romance period. If someone is assuming Hetalia is about a bunch of gay guys who happen to be countries macking on each other and they aren't into stories like that, that is perfectly valid, really. Especially since. You know. Most BL is basically idealized mush aimed at teen girls and young women anyway. I used to read a lot of actual BL and it tends to be bad chick lit at best, insulting at worst ("ooh Mr Seme I love you so much even though you raped me!" for instance). So yeah no not going to assume anyone is homophobic for avoiding the BL genre.

OP, this is going to sound mean, but ditch this person. She's only emotionally dragging you down with her. You can't "fix her". You did what any good friend would do: being there for her; and it didn't help. Just leave her. Walk out of that friendship before it keeps consuming you, because that's what will happen: you won't pull her up and out of her situation, she will pull you down and leave you trapped in a bad emotional place. If she wants to change and improve, she's the only person who can do it. You can't do it for her.

I'm telling you this because I've been in similar situations (with an alarming repetition, now that I think about it), and as much as it hurt to end a friendship with someone I cared so much about, I only realized how unhappy and used I felt by them until after I had cut ties with the person. You don't realize how much you had been hurting each other until after you've taken a step back and let enough time pass by to see and feel the difference.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had this happen if I've known too much about someone's work, because inevitably they just regurgitate the stuff you've already read. You can't expect her to come up with shiny new ideas.

I also think that celebrities are often just a bit dull in real life because they are just ordinary people, and it's easy to forget that. It's why there's no point meeting your heroes. If you meet them because you have mutual friends, and are introduced at a dinner party or something, you might love them, but as a fan, you are only going to get their public persona, which may not be what you would like.

Same here. Those sites are excellent resources to learn how not to behave online (or even offline). Learning from other people's mistakes is better than having to learn from yours.

"wanting the same rights that women have been given"?

LOLWHAT? Yes, because we have all those awesome extra rights that men don't have and they are totally oppressed and left behind. What were they again?

Hahahahahaha NO.

MRAs are, to a man, whiny douches who can't bear the idea of real equality, or of giving up any of their privileges to those damn wimmin. And they'll whine a bit more when you call them on it, but scratch them and they show their true colours.

And many of them ARE "fucking nuts" and bloody scary to boot. Have you READ their stuff? Have you SEEN them cluster onto prefectly mainstream and reasonable feminist blogs and sites and tell posters and commenters they need a good rape to sort them out?
