How do you balance fandoms?

There was some drama between our group of friends and now I kind of want to make a new start. The good thing is the first fandom had like, fandoms in it so I'm going to hop over into another one and try my best to ignore the other parts. I made other friends and I don't want to lose those, you know? But I would like to just have a place where I don't have to worry about those previous friends finding me or knowing that they're reading my stuff. (Even if they do, they won't know it's me after all). The last time I tried to balance two fandoms though, I totally left the other one behind and focused on the new one. I really don't want to do that again though.

TLDR: anon wants to join a new fandom but worries over abandoning the old one and is humbly asking for advice

This was posted very late yesterday, and I loved the idea so anon gave me permission to give it another try today. I'll c/p their original post now:


I recently realized that I'm fascinated by listening to meta about fandoms. I love people thinking critically about trends in their fandom, and discussing them. So my challenge, should you choose to accept it, is this: describe your fandom! Pretend like it's a small nation, and talk about any cultures and customs it has. Give us an insider look, basically - something people wouldn't know unless they're in the fandom.

(Some sample questions: How wanky is it? Is it more or less unified, or divided into several fractions that don't really mingle? How important is shipping? What are some common fandom-specific plots you see all the time? How do people feel about the canon/creators? Which characters are woobified, revered, bashed? What are some silly but entertaining in-jokes everyone overuses? What are some trends you noticed, and why did/do they happen?)

Basically, what makes your fandom unique - the good, the bad, and the awesome.

Your thoughts on it? Personally I like the show, but I think they should start giving the book a bit more air time. If that's the huge mystery of the show, it seems sort of low key/only mentioned very rarely. Especially now that it's shown there's more than one.

Hi! Do any of you know by any chance of any good tutorials for Tumblr? I think I have mastered the basics by now, but I'd like to learn some more advanced functions, and let's face it, the so called "tutorials" and the "help section" from that site are almost useless.

Ok, so, I have dimples in both my cheeks and people always tell me it's so ~cute~ or whatever, but it makes me feel like I'm five or something. I'm 20. It doesn't help that I almost never see ladies in any sort of media with prominent dimples; it just makes me feel even more like a weirdo for being an adult woman with such a childish facial trait, and I hate it. I want to know I'm not alone in being a lady with dimples.

Health problem

I'm mostly a healthy, fit person, but I am super worried about something. I have a really hard lump above and to the right of my adam's apple. It's been there for like four years, and it's grown since I first noticed it.

I don't have the time or money for this bullshit. I don't have a job, I don't have health insurance, and I'm afraid that if I go to a doctor now and it turns out to be something bad, it will fuck my chances of getting a job and become a money sinkhole. I don't want to be a malingerer for my whole life.

It's been noticed by four doctors independently, without my direction. Each time they ask if it hurts, has it been getting bigger, does it prevent you from swallowing? So I lie and say no, and they leave it at that, but prompt me to get it checked out.

I just dunno. I have too much I want to do. Having a potentially shitastrophe of a health problem is not one of them. Brushing this off is probably not a good idea, right? :(

Writing question inspired by a secret from yesterday

I found the secret about asexual fic interesting, and now I'm wanting to write some. Most of what I've come across has involved a relationship between an asexual person and a non-asexual person, and it seems to always involve some level of unhappiness on the part of at least one of them. I'd rather do something where both characters are asexual, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Obviously there will be a point where the issue is brought up, and I don't know if "I'm asexual" / "oh, hey, me too!" / "let's go out!" / "okay!" is really good enough.
And then of course once they both know the other one's asexual, too, is it something they need to discuss? I guess in theory there's really no point if they both know where the other stands, but I feel like they would still need to have a conversation about it. (Of course, that's what I would do, but I've been told more than once that I analyze everything to death, so I'm not sure if anyone else would find it necessary.)

I have zero experience with any of this, so I though I'd ask you guys. Thoughts?
