But wat about teh monies?

Seriously, as long as people think there's money to be made, they'll keep making these movies. If you don't like it, don't give them your money. I'll just be waiting for the sequel to Thor (so I can laugh at how awful it is) and Captain America (so I can drool over Chris Evans).

Ugh I want to look forward to the Thor sequel, but FFS they've already mentioned a zillion plot ideas and characters--at this point I'm just hoping it will be coherent. :(

I hope the sequel to Captain America is all about Bucky/The Winter Soldier. Then it would almost be a sequel and a movie about a new character. :D

Eh.

On one hand, I seriously dislike Extremis, especially (theoretically, that is) for the movieverse, and am gritting my teeth for stupidity and racefail all over the place with the Mandarin and all the stuff in China.

On the other hand, Shane Black. And the cast.

So I'm kinda torn.

Agreed. I'm excited for the new solo movies, especially Winter Soldier. And Iron Man 3 has Shane Black as director, what's not to love?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree. i give no fucks about solo movies unless it's black widow centric. or banner, but i know that isn't gonna happen.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-22 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
The only sequel I want is Thor and that's mainly for wanting more Thor and Loki in my life. Otherwise I don't really need more movies. Widow and hawkeye can have their own movies though just to be fair.

But really after the Avengers the solo movies are less exciting. But for many of the "classic" Avengers characters I've always liked them more in the team and had little interest in their individual comics.

I think the characters would start to feel thinner if all they did was keep making Avengers stuff. (Which I know isn't exactly what you're suggesting.)

[personal profile] truxillogical 2012-10-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a legitimate point. It's part of what makes the shared universe of movies so appealing--you can develop the heart and nuance of a character in their own movie to bring even more to the scenes in a group movie. Like how Tony's reaction to Coulson's death in Avengers is understandable enough if it's the only movie you've seen, but if you've seen Iron Man, you know Tony's already got one friend dying to give him a chance on his conscience, so it enhances the movie itself.

No different from comicbooks, really.

Man, I just do not see how Winter Soldier could be described as "underwhelming." If anything - and if the filmmakers have their act together - that has the potential to be the best of the Marvel Studios movies.

Sit down and learn.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-10-22 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd have the series ruined in two movies tops.

The whole fucking reason this worked as well as it did is BECAUSE everybody also had their own stories. This is the comics formula done right!

Not everybody who came to avengers was an avengers fan. Some were Thor fans. Others Iron Man fans. And so on!

Also, the fact of the matter is, while avengers was a wonderfull movie... not that deep. You have to include a bit of everybody, so you can't give anybody too lengthy a chunk of story/character development time. Which is fine! But not if it's all there is. Trying to introduce new characters alone means nobody else gets a story anymore, and we are already here for THEM.

My only complaint is that I wish the Avengers would potentially cameo in each others' movies.

Okay, specifically, I wish that Bruce was going to be in Iron Man 3. I don't have a lot of interest in a Hulk movie, even with Ruffalo, but seeing Bruce hanging out in Stark/Avenger Tower? That'd be nifty.

Heck, it feels like in any specifically Iron Man movie, we should still see moments of the other Avengers, if only because Tony's got that tower all set up.

Sigh. The movies are going to come and mess with the wonderful "and then Tony adopted everyone because that is how Tony makes friends" fanon.

I'm pretty skeptical about all the sequels too (and I SO wish they would make a movie about Black Widow and Hawkeye...I am disappoint, Marvel). But the one I'm side-eyeing most is actually Avengers 2, because while I absolutely love a lot of things Whedon has made, I don't trust him. At all. Not a single millimeter. With anything.

Also, I don't think it's necessarily "impossible" or "anticlimactic" to go back to solo films after The Avengers. You'd just have to actually acknowledge that the Avengers and the invasion and everything actually happened and it was a huge fucking deal that changed the characters and their situations a lot, and take that into account with little details. Mention the other members. Reference events that took place offscreen. Make the team-up a central issue for villains and for the relationship between the hero and their supporting casts. Give excuses for why the other Avengers can't sail in and help the hero kick the villain's ass. Nowadays, with the internet and given how crossover-laden this franchise already is, it wouldn't be very confusing.

However, it's pretty much a guarantee that when the sequels start coming out, the fandom is going to collectively go "lol! sequels? what sequels?" and keep writing fic in the same vein they're writing it now, no matter how much their fanon gets jossed. Coulson was only the beginning! So, uh, you'll always have fanfic?

You're kidding, right? How on earth is a Winter Soldier film for Cap2 underwhelming? I have to assume that you've never read the comics because no one who has read them and is in their right mind would call that story arc underwhelming. :|

From a few rumors I've heard/read, apparently they will turn up in each others' movies. Like Hawkeye in Thor, I guess? Though I'm hoping it will be a bit more than that, something closer to Black Widow in IM2. It won't be all of them at once, but it'll still keep up the notion that they're in contact and friends. Because it would be weird if those solo movies pretended like the Avengers movie never happened.

But at this point I'm more curious about how (if?) they're going to incorporate the SHIELD tv show. I suppose it'll depend on Coulson's grand come-back.

If you don't want to watch the movies, OP, you don't have to.

I'm still interested and I hope they'll be good. Is there a chance they'll be shit? Yes, but there's a chance any movie will be shit.

So, how about we have a compromise? I'll go see them and you don't have to. Seems fair to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I won't deny I would've liked a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie, but I'm excited about the next three movies. I'm not so sure about Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, but I think they've done a good job so far building this universe so hopefully it will work out.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-23 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree with you, OP. I, for one, can't wait to see Eccleston as Malekith the Accursed (Simonson's run, yo!).

That, and if Malekith becomes a fandom darling, I'll enjoy the wankfest that's sure to come (if Loki is any indication).

I'd pass on either a Widow or Hawkeye flick, but it would be great if they make cameos on the upcoming liveaction show with Coulson.

Really? Because the Thor sequel sounds amazing, Winter Soldier is something I've longed to see in theaters for a while now, and Iron Man 3 has been built up to, there's no way you can't do it. I look forward to future films about Clint, Natasha, and Hank, but... These new films are going to be awesome.

...Okay, but what about those of us who liked the solo movies far more than we did the Avengers movie? Personally, I though the Averngers would a huge mess that kept jumping perspectives far too much to really get into anything but a vague plot and as a result was boring as sin.

So, I'd far rather they make solo movies than produce a mess like that again.
