Your First Period (Possibly TMI)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I was just randomly remembering some horrible episode of 7th Heaven where Ruthie didn't want to make a big deal out of it and then she got told "tough shit we're having a celebratory dinner where everyone knows about it no matter what you want". Which seemed horrible to me, and still does.

But to the point: How old were you when you got your first period? Did you or anyone else make a big deal out of it. Did you want anyone to?

I got my first period two months before my thirteenth birthday (a couple of weeks after September 11th, actually, so I had a fairly literal "there goes my childhood" month). I just told my Mom; she seemed a little dismayed/surprised to realize her baby just started menstruating, but I just put on a pad and went on with my life.

I was 12, I got mine at school (ugh), the teacher was understanding and since it was a middle school she had plenty of pads and stuff, so she gave me one. Nobody in my family made a big deal out of it, my mom talked to me about it but there was no OH MY GOD YOU'VE BECOME A WOMAN (and I'm glad). I had an awkward moment a few days later when my dad took me to the local high school because my science project was in a district-wide science fair there and I was complaining about cramps the whole time and he didn't know what to do or say about it. My dad was always forgetting that I was a girl I think, in his own way (he obviously wanted a son and never got one), so being faced with something like that probably made him feel weird... whatever

I was 9 and terrified. My mother/sister/aunts/grandmothers all got theirs in their early teens, so nobody was expecting me to need "that talk" so soon. Sudden blood + awful, awful cramps meant I truly thought I was dying, and I made a big deal about it at school, in front of everybody. Worse: my male teacher didn't immediately know the problem (I guess I wasn't explaining it very well or something) so he took me to the nurse and then he made a big deal about it. Cue my panicked mother showing up after lunch and then practically crying with relief once she realized the problem.

Sometimes my childhood was really awkward, okay.

Anon, because ... yeah.
I had my first one at a about ... twelve and a half? It was a huge deal at the time, because I was the last out of all of my friends, and we'd all planning on going to the aquatic centre that day (via my mum), but that fell through because yeah, I was terrified of tampons. So we went and saw a movie instead. Point being, my two closest friends were there. I was kinda upset about the whole thing, mostly cause it was seriously embarrassing, and then mum made me tell my grandma for some reason. I'm the oldest of all the kids in my generation (on both sides of the family, as well), so a slightly larger deal of it was made than otherwise would've been. But I got a very nice necklace out of it from my dad, so alls well that ends well?

I got mine in the middle of 7th grade, I went a couple of months before I ever really told anyone, and then I just got a do you want us to buy you tampons or pads talk and that was it...

(We had already covered periods in sex Ed so it wasn't like I didn't know what was happening)

I got my first one in church over Easter. I don't remember anyone making a big deal out of it, but my dad did go out of his way to buy me something nice since I was miserable. (It was the two-disc special collector's edition of the Star Wars: A New Hope soundtrack. I still have it.)

uhh, well, I remember being tenish and having a small amount of bleeding and my mother thinking it was my first period and explaining everything to me (partially through the help of a website that I'm assuming was for some pad company or something). That being said it was REALLY minor and I didn't end up getting another period for months afterward, so part of me wonders if I'd somehow broken my hymen or something. I'm not sure. Either way I don't remember a huge deal being made of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I think I was about ten? It wasn't something embarrassing or a big deal for me, and I can't really remember where I even got them for the first time. I had slight dripping beforehand, so it didn't come as a surprise. My mother gave me some pads and that was it. It was a lot later that I realized that for other women it could be a lot harder, since I didn't have any cramps or PMS or even bleed that much.

Just before I turned 15, I think.

I didn't realise what is was (even though I knew what periods were, it didn't click), so I just threw my knickers away. Mom randomly found them, realised I'd started, sat me down and told me.

That was pretty much it :P

Haha. I was just thinking about this today for whatever reason. So, TMI time. I was 12 (1999). It was Halloween. It was a Sunday and I had been playing with my brothers all day and looking forward to trick r treating later that night. But, what's this when I go to the bathroom? Blood everywhere? So, I get my mom and I just start bawling before I can get a word out.

Once things were sorted I ended up wearing one of my mom's pads, which was super huge and uncomfortable. Trick r treating wasn't as fun.

I think I was thirteen. I was really worried my mom would make a big deal out of it because she was always asking me if I had my period yet, as if I wouldn't tell her when I did. But she was pretty OK about it as I remember it.

I remember we had to go out and get pads because my mom didn't have a period anymore.

(She used to always call it "monthlies" which weirded me out.)

I got mine at about 13, on the way home in the car. When we got to the house I ran for the loo, thinking I must have wet myself or something. When I realised what it was I went and found my Mum and she was completely practical about it all. I have genuinely no idea if/when she told my Dad, I certainly didn't. And I definitely didn't feel like celebrating.

I was twelve and I woke up with a brown stain in my underwear. Since it didn't smell like anything i sort of shrugged it off for some reason and changed underwear. When that pair got stained again then i freaked out and went to my mom and she told me what it was. Then the cramps kicked in and I spent the next two days crying from the pain and fear. I vaguely knew about periods before, but suddenly realizing that i'd have to live with it for years to come really freaked me out.

Re: Your First Period (Possibly TMI)

I was about 12. My first period started with a drop of blood, maybe the size of a quarter. I remember thinking it was weird, but didn't connect it to puberty. A few days later there was more blood, plenty of it. But I figured, meh it'll go away, so I threw my panties into the laundry basket.

My mom found them that night and sat me down for "the talk". I have a clear memory of me telling her "No that's not it. This happened before, it'll stop." She gave me a "mom" look and shrugged it off.

The next morning, I was still bleeding and had to go to school. So I went to her and asked about all that "period" stuff she'd been talking about last night.

Re: Your First Period (Possibly TMI)

(Anonymous) 2012-11-08 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I was 10 or 11. I was still in primary school so I didn't get the talk at school and my mom didn't get hers until way later so she didn't tell me either. Anyway, I thought I'd hurt myself somehow so I washed the old undies and stuck tissue paper inside new, clean undies to soak up the blood and stop the bleeding. Everything was fine and dandy until a few hours later when I realized the bleeding wasn't gonna stop. In fact, it was getting heavier.

Cue immediate panick and running to mom. In tears.

Fun times.

Hmm, maybe freshman in high school? So that's like what, 15? 16? I stayed home for the day, but that's about it. No big deal, no talking about it or anything.

Eh, I got mine at... 12? 13? I was super embarrassed even though I actually knew what periods were & mum'd had The Talk with me. I remember writing in my diary something to the effect of, "What if I have to tell a teacher?!" and being mortified at the thought. I just went to the toilet one day and saw blood and told mum.

Re: Your First Period (Possibly TMI)

(I'm really glad this is anon)

It was at the beginning of 7th grade and my mom still "supervised" when I wiped myself after going to the bathroom (she also "helped me" bath... I know this is extremely wrong, she has issues... eventually at the end of that year that I told her to fuck off and don't even think of following me to the fucking bathroom again) so uhm she found out at the same time that me and started freaking out and asking me if I had hurt myself or sat on something pointy. Of course, your almost 12 year old has a drop of blood on her toilet paper and you don't assume she got her period, no, you freak out. She called my dad to come and see, which he was really embarrassed to do since he realised what was going on. So, all in all, awful.
Oh and then my mom them insisted she would teach me put on my pads but that actually meant she wanted to do that herself... awkward and uncomfortable as fuck.
And I had terrible cramps :(

I think it was 9th grade, so 14, almost 15? For the most part I remember it being so excruciatingly painful I thought I was dying or something. Went to the clinic and the doctor was like "lol congratulations".

I did not feel terribly celebratory.

I was 12 and in a foreign country with no pads. I didn't tell anyone, and bunched up a bunch of paper towels to use as one. There was a lot of blood, but it didn't last long at all (maybe two days), and I honestly wasn't even sure if it was a period or not at the time.

Next time I got it, I took one of my mom's panty-liners (I thought that was as much of a pad as I would need, since the first one hadn't lasted long) and my mom found out when she saw the used one in the trash. I really hadn't wanted her to find out, but at least she didn't make too big a deal out of it.

Almost 13, and I actually didn't realize I had it until I hit the bathroom because it was so cold I literally wasn't noticing anything but 'Fuck it's cold!'

After that I went over to my mom and asked her where she kept her pads in the car [We were running the family booth at a craft fair in the middle of no where, so there wasn't much else I could do], and we picked up pads after we shut down for the day.

13ish during the summer holidays. I ignored it for a little and hoped it was not THAT (because Did Not Want), cue stained panties.

While my mom didn't go overboard with the "great, you're now a woman!" stuff, there still was a bit of that. Like I said, I didn't think there was anything great about leaking blood and feeling a bit faint (cramps only became an issue a couple of years later) - the fact that my family dragged me out on a veeery long bike trip the next day didn't really help either (my dad probably had no idea, but I think my mom probably should have tried to encourage a diffent activity...)

I was also pretty peeved that my mom told my grandmother. I can't see how what my private parts are doing is any of her business.

I think I was ten, almost eleven. And I was really upset about it, I was the first of all my friends to go through puberty, so my friends all made fun of me for it, and as a result I was suuuuper shy about it to the extent that if I had a pimple, I wouldn't leave my room without a mask over my face. I just wanted to hide in my room all day, but it was a Saturday so my friends kept coming over to play all day, and I couldn't explain anything to them so I was forced to play with them. Then my mom made me go watch this girl from our church get baptized, which she made me wear a very uncomfortable not-fitting skirt for... and well, for baptisms they have the kids go sit down on the floor by the baptismal font, and put mirrors on the ceiling so everyone else can see... basically, as I was sitting down my skirt rode up, and my panties were visible, and this got caught by the mirrors on the ceiling. I accidentally flashed my bloody panties in front of my whole church.

It was the worst experience of my life.

Eleven. I had just come home from buying a pot from Home Depot with my mom. I accidentally broke the pot and started crying because this was a replacement pot for one that had also broken. I went to the bathroom to fix myself up and stop crying. That's when I found out. My mom was a nurse so I knew what was going down. I never wanted to start. I started crying again. My mom tried to reassure me and that didn't work so she resorted to the truth ("Yes, it's going to suck.") and bribery.

Ten or eleven. I got it while helping my mother prepare communion for church the next day. It wasn't really a huge deal because my breasts had already come in (hooray, puberty!). I went from flat to C cup in like, two days. My aunt was kind of a bitch about the whole thing, though (period and breasts). But she's kind of a bitch about most everything about me, so whatever.
