If you want to bind them, then bind them. It's your body, do whatever you want to it that seems fit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 PREACH.

I can't relate to this personally, but it's your body - do what you want with it, so long as it's not detrimental to your health or the health of others.

And I think you should talk to your friends about it. If they're consistently cosplaying as dudes or as flat-chested girls, you might not be as alone as you think.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
+ another 1

Also, I can't vouch for all people, but in my group of friends, those of us who are trans and bind or used to bind for gender identity related reasons enjoy talking tips/techniques, and do this both with each other and with friends who cosplay and perform drag. I would suggest bringing up your interest in binding to those cosplaying friends, and seeing if they have any tips to share with you, or if they simply enjoy chatting about it. Bet they will be excited to talk about binding with you!

Hey, whatever works. As long as you're using an actual binder and it's the right size and not like, duct tape.

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2013-02-17 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Just make sure you're binding safely. No ace bandages or duct tape, please. Those can seriously hurt you.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Duct tape I understand, but what's wrong with Ace bandages?

It's your body, you can do with it what you like and don't need to justify yourself for that. But if you're looking for an alternative (I don't know how much time and effort binding takes), have you tried sports bras? They support your breasts really well, are comfortable and don't make your breasts look bigger or pushed up or anything like that.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This. I had major problems wearing bras for years, because they felt wrong and uncomfortable, but I'm too big to comfortably go without. Sports bras proved a godsend.

I have gotten some shit for wearing them regularly, particularly in summer when I'm wearing tank tops and the straps are visible, because they're not exactly ladylike or delicate-looking, but screw that. The past few years are the first time I've been properly comfortable since I hit puberty.

I don't think it's shallow at all finding what you're comfortable looking like and with your body. It doesn't seem like something your friends would be judgey about. Not that I know your friends. But srsly, doesn't seem like a big deal. You should bring it up!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
If that's you in the photos, I think you look lovely either way. It's your body and the only reason you need for doing what you want with it is "I just want to". No justification required. If people are snobby towards you about it, they're shitty people and you're well shot of them.

OT, but thanks for the link to that site, OP. I'm planning to write a fic where a female character binds her chest and this will be a huge help.

Do it if you want to do it.

If your friends actually give you shit over such a small thing, then maybe they aren't very good friends?
There's nothing wrong with shaping your body under your clothes as you see fit.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Your body, look however makes you happiest but I don't get your explanation of using a binder because you only want to look not droopy. Maybe its the picture. In any case I don't think a binder fits most people's conception of shallow even given your reasoning so don't worry.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I initially started binding for dysphoria reasons, but even though that's lessened a bit with regards to my breasts, I still generally use my compression shirt instead of a bra simply because it's so much comfier. Plus, most bras don't really keep you from jiggling all over the place and that movement distresses me, so it's nice to be able to keep them mostly holstered. I'd pretty much recommend compression shirts to any female-bodied person who's sick of bras, regardless of their gender identity XD

Anyway, as a trans guy, I'm not judging. Do what you gotta do to make living in your meatsuit as bearable as possible.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, op, I've always wanted to bind for the same reasons :/

(except that my boobs just got bigger and now are size c shit shit shit)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Go for it, OP! I want to bind for equally "shallow" reasons. Underwires hurt me like crazy, and most wireless bras are pure crap. Really really expensive crap. I love my boobs. They're both a C cup and not saggy in the least. However, showing off my rack isn't worth the pain or money.

Uneven breasts and breasts that sag are very common.

It's amazing what a well fitted bra can do. Unfortunately a lot of people aren't in the right size. If you know the right places to look there's a bra for everything, not all A cups are push ups. (even if they aren't always easy to find.)

But if you want to try a binder that's your call. I doubt your friends will find you shallow, but if you're worried you can always research it on your own and not tell them.

It's not shallow! Boobs are like snowflakes, and everybody likes to wear their breasts a little differently. I don't think it's out of place to ask people with experience in binding about it. In my case, traditional bras do absolutely nothing—most bras put their support underneath the breast, which is too low for me. I suffered through a few years of traditional bras, with the straps cinched all the way up or sometimes sewn up further, before I realized the problem wasn't my boobs, but the bras. So I switched to sports bras all the time. In fact, the bras I wear now are intended for women who have recently had mastectomies. (They are now discontinued from Soma. BOO. BOO!)

If your binder works for you, that's great! But if you ever want to explore bras that aren't underwire and useless for your shape, I recommend checking out post-surgical bras and stuff like Title 9.

i don't think they'll find you shallow. even if you don't have dysphoria there's nothing wrong with binding.

it's weird because i've seen people question whether or not they should be allowed to bind... but you don't see people asking whether or not they are allowed to wear a bra. 1000th-ing the opinion that you should do what you want & ask your friends for advice if you want. if they're just doing it for cosplay it is probably not related to dysphoria either, yes?

[personal profile] ariakas 2013-02-18 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
If you're an AA-A cup, you probably won't even need to bind; just get a tight sports bra. I'm in the same boat chest-wise and I've crossplayed for years, never bothered with binders. I'm flatter than the woman in picture with her binder on just wearing a sports bra, or no bra >>. As someone said above, she's probably a small band-size C or D, though.

That said, if you like binding, who cares? Your friends probably won't. Whatever's comfortable for you. There are some doucheholes out there who will get weirded out, but those doucheholes exist whether you're binding or not (I had a woman at a con flip out on me about "crossdressing" in my street clothes because I "was binding"... I wasn't, I was just wearing a normal bra under loose material. She actually grabbed my shirt and yanked it down to see my bra straps when I said so. Gee, thanks lady. I don't feel flat enough already.)

I wear two bras, one regular and one sports, because I like the way it looks better. People keep telling me "just get one that fits right!" I did, and now I wear a sports bra on top of my well-fitted bra.

They're not the ones bearing my boobs, I am, and I like how I do it.
