I disagree with the statement that they're nothing special, but I do kind of wonder why everyone has to pretend they're obsessed with the Beatles these days. I know some people aren't faking but it's pretty obvious that many are.

They still sound great. Some songs from White album, for example, sound like independent hits of our days.

you know, i was just thinking to myself the other day that there's like a ton of beatles songs that i wouldnt bother listening to if they weren't beatles songs

i mean yeah some are songs i'd love regardless of where it came from, but stuff like "eight days a week"? if that were some song just written by some random jackoffs, i'd be like "oh cute" and never listen to it again. but as it is, i fucking love that song.

(that i grew up listening to a lot of those songs MAY have something to do with it)

I appreciate how influential they were and what they did for popular music, but I'm not a huge fan of them. I like the members' solo work more.

Despite my friend being hella obsessed (her room is literally covered with posters and work of them, she has one of those tumblrs where she obsessed over them, etc) I never really cared for them, but I still get they're one of the biggest influences from music.
Although, I really enjoyed this German song of theirs we listened to in class. It was stuck in me head for over a week.

I've never really cared for them beyond knowing that they are important culturally. I like a few songs, even have some on my iPod but they tend to be "obvious" ones. I have got a few funny looks over the years when I say I'm not all that keen personally. Once someone who had literally just got into them two weeks ago had a massive go at me along the lines of "call yourself a music fan, you have no taste" etc and all the while I was going "lol" internally because you know, two weeks and suddenly he was King of Beatles fans.

I can't imagine how it was seeing them at their height because dear god...the screaming. It's bad enough on a recording!

I kind of feel like it's ~edgy to hate on The Beatles these days. Not saying OP is doing this, just thinking out loud.

And I don't have a favourite song of theirs. There are way to many great ones to chose between.

Also, music doesn't necessarily get exclusively better over time.

The Beatles are to pop music as Tolkien is to fantasy fiction. They might not necessarily appeal to everyone's personal taste but they had such a great big influence on the scene that they get respect/fans for that alone as well as for their actual productions. The reason that a lot of pop music seems Beatles-like is that the entire direction of pop music was heavily influenced by them, just as the reason a lot of fantasy fiction seems Tolkienesque is that the entire direction of fantasy fiction was heavily influenced by Tolkien's work.

I think they're overhyped, but only in the sense that people look at you funny if you say you don't like their music.

They're objectively musical geniuses (like all four people, even though I hate Lennon) and the range of types of music they were influenced by and influenced is pretty unparalleled. They're still pretty special.

My main issue is the fact that some people get really angry if you say "I don't like the beatles". Like you can not like music if you don't like them. They like all of the bands they influenced were influenced by other bands themselves. They performed other peoples work, they released cover (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_covered_by_the_Beatles).
They were a band. They were influential. But being a fan is not compulsory. I'd much rather stick with the Rolling Stones.

I never cared about The Beatles. My mum never really liked them (granted she was born in the 60s, so a bit young for their time, but people born much later than that still love them) so I never heard much of their music growing up. I guess they started the whole young good looking male group thing and maybe their music was new at the time? But I don't think they're particularly amazing. It's just not my kind of music.

They're like One Direction except they were very influential to popular music and had some really talented songwriters in the group. Probably explains why the Beatles trend will never really die out.

Take it from someone who was a kiad when they hit the airwaves, the Beatles were a MAJOR change in music. From their beginning through all they went through as they grew to their individual careers.

They influenced a lot of musicians who went on to influence others.

You may yet click with them if you come back to listen in the future. But everyone doesn't have to be a fan of their music.

I've never cared for the Beatles' music, though I acknowledge what they did for music in the 60s. That said, ever since I read Helter Skelter, I can't help but associate them with that. Sorry, guys. You deserve better than that.

Okay, the Beatles are not my favorite band, they're not even my favorite 60s boy band (they rank below the Beach Boys and the Monkees (I know!) for me). But a lot of their songs are catchy as hell and they had a lot of influence on music (culture, production, other musicians, etc.). I think I knew some of the songs before I even realized the band existed.

My mom is a HUGE Beatles' fan, so I grew up under that influence. At first I didn't really care for or about them, but honestly, the turning point for me was going to see the Beatles' LOVE Cirque du Soleil show. I ADORED that show and afterwards I borrowed all my mom's Beatles music, and now I listen to them often.

Like everyone else said, it's fine if you don't like them (although they have a huge variety of song styles, so I'd be surprised if you couldn't find at least ONE you liked, though there's no point in hunting if you're not interested), but you have to at least acknowledge their talent and influence on the musical world.
