I continue to be astonished at this movie being such a big fucking deal. Okay, they changed some key parts of the premise and one of the people who came up with the idea doesn't know what "fairy tale" means. That's very annoying. I can see why it would make you not enjoy the movie. I don't see how it makes the movie a crime against humanity.

I'm not sure what this makes me, but I always judge a piece of fiction based on its artistic merits firstly, and on the problematic... -ness of its morals secondly (not that I disregard the latter competely, there are a couple of works, albeit those are reaaally rare exceptions, which I dislike solely because I can't in any way agree with the authors' points while admitting they're actually very well done, craft-wise), so when a movie (book, whatever) sucks I leave it at that and don't look deeper into it. When I saw this movie I thought it sucked, and it were not only morals but much, much more basic elements of it which put me off. The dialogue, the characterization, the conflict - everything was incredibly stupid and clichéd. Looking at such a wreck of a movie I find it ridiculous to seriously reflect on its message, because a pile of outdone tropes, mindlessly scattered together, can't possibly provide any. I guess it was indeed important to point out the insulting implications one might draw from this shit, but to really *hate* it? What? Gosh, I even think it failed at its own statement: the hero is such an absurdly obvious Mary-Sue I doubt anyone with a good taste could sympathize with him by the end of the film.

The chief complaint I've heard from most people about this movie was the "role reversal" aspect of it. Being that, in the movie, The Wizard is presented as the 'hero' of the piece, but that he was ~in fact~ the main bad guy in Baum's "OZ" books. Forgive me, but my only experience with "OZ" is the 1939 Judy Garland film, 1985's "Return to Oz", and this movie. I've never read the books. So, somebody please enlighten me, WAS the Wizard the bad guy originally?

I just can't even with this movie. SO much potential, SO MUCH BULLSHIT.

Casting issues aside (Franco and Kunis were godawful), my biggest problem with this fucking movie was that apparently, the ONLY reason The Wicked Witch becomes the Wicked Witch is because some dude broke her heart. Seriously? She's a massively powerful woman who basically rules the land along side her sister and because one douche bag hit it and quit it, she ends up ugly and crazy and evil. She knows him for a few hours, gets seduced, then starts immediately talking about how they're going to get married. I guess that why we're supposed to think she deserved him running away without a word, and then we're supposed to think she deserved her fate (ugly and alone). And her sister deserved it too, because she wasn't pure and virginal and sweet like Glinda, so her punishment was also 'uglification' and loneliness. But at least pure, sweet, virginal Glinda got 'rewarded' in the end by getting to fuck the douchy con artist coward, right?

UGH this movie. At least Rachel Weisz was awesome.
