Wait, what?

Re: OP reply

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Some people are good at keeping in touch at a distance. Some people just aren't. I've learned to accept that I fall into the latter category, and deal with it by cultivating a lot of shallow arm's-length Internet relationships and a small handful of real-life friends who are also friends of my husband, who is more socially adept and more or less forces me to stay in contact with them.

Cynical, impatient and cold, though? I don't think it's necessary to go that route to keep a safe emotional distance. Caution bordering on paranoia about my real-life information, while keeping a laser-like focus on fandom matters, works pretty well for me.

He's 44!? Man, the tv makeup and post production make him look super younger. And here I was guessing mid thirties or something. I wonder how old he's supposed to be in the show, because he's ROCKING the vulnerability angle I assumed was based on age.

And what about when you live long enough that not only have the people you grown up with died, but everyone who remembers them have died, too? Do you have healing abilities, too, or is that ship that just capsized with you in it going to leave you in pain until people decide to dig you out (if they decide to dig you out and not just leave the ship there as a memorial)? What about when the rest of the world starts noticing that you're not dying; what would they do to study you knowing they can't kill you no matter what they do?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
But didn't the movie pretty much answer the last question. Seems to me like it was implying that flowers formed from sun drops are a fairly well known myth in that universe along with the fact that they will heal. So when she got sick, they went out looking for a miracle, because that is what you do for your beloved queen I guess. They just got lucky that in this case myth turned out to be a little more truthful than normal.

Re: Bioshock 2 Racism Wank

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-05 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well...I can see it. I mean, if you're going to start your game with a really big theme about racism, where both your main characters are white, making the only major black character "just as bad" (as in, Elizabeth and Booker keep repeating that this is the case) as the extremely racist, jingoist, terrorist main villain...yeah, I can see it.

The message is against extremism in general, but if you're going to have a game that deals with racism (and they're are very, very few games that do), and all of the black characters in it are lunatics...Well, yeah, I see the issue.

Now, I'm positive it wasn't intentional on the part of the developers. Basically everyone is a bad person outside of the two main characters (and Booker and Elizabeth have their moments), and the story is about the perils of extremism and so on. So I know it wasn't their intention...but, it's rarely about intentionally sending these kinds of messages.

[personal profile] supermanda 2013-04-05 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
It was so weird that I can't even explain it in some sort of detail. All I know is that I ship Belle and Gaston now, because I think it could be hilarious and sexy and dramatic and I can imagine it would change Belle immensely in all of the wrong yet right ways.

Leaving to go on exchange halfway across the world for half a year. I was kind of this weird combination of THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME :D and OH GOD I'M GOING TO FAIL I'M GOING TO DIE I'M GOING TO HAVE TO EAT HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP WHY AM I GOING TO AMERICA SHIIIIIT...

It ended up being awesome :D

(Aside from the friend of the woman I was renting a room from, who tended to walk around with his loaded gun on his hip. I'm from a country with fairly strict gun control laws. I felt just a tiny bit afraid every time I saw him. And two and a half weeks after I left Tucson, there was that shooting... I love the States and want to live there one day, but fuck, America's gun laws terrify me.)

Re: Fainting

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I've fainted three times, twice when I was in the military. And I mean, total black out, no idea how long I was out unconsciousness.

The first time in my teens, I was sitting at my desk and I fell over, knocked my head into the corner and woke up on the floor.

One time in the military I was in formation and they all thought I "locked my knees", but then I fainted two more times after I came to in a 10 minute period. The last time I woke up when I was in the ER already.

But still, they have no idea what caused it. I have no idea if I have some illness or if it's random weirdness.

Re: human x non-human ships

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-05 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. You can also choose which ones you like. There are non-human flings, non-human romances...and if you actually turn out to want to date a human, that's available too. You can go with characters that are fairly-human like the asari or drell species or very unhuman like Garrus and Tali.

Re: human x non-human ships

[personal profile] sugar_spun 2013-04-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
No, that's all of them. If you're interested in a guy, go for Garrus--he has the most pay-off. If you're interested in a girl, either Liara or Tali. Liara has the most content, but Tali has a lot as well.

There are a couple of flings in the game with asari, but that's it.

[personal profile] hallokatzchen 2013-04-05 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't about the game being accurate for the time period, the reactions to the game from many black people was about the content being triggering (god that word has lost its meaning so hard).

A friend of mine said that the content was very upsetting to her so she's not going to play the game, and unfortunately that went from people telling her "don't be so sensitive" all the way to people calling her all manner of slurs and sending her death threats all because she said that she doesn't want to play a game that was triggering to her.

I'M GOING TO HAVE TO EAT HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

Haha, I don't know why I thought that was so funny

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
It would probably be hard to find any numbers that weren't considered biased, to be honest. Especially since the NRA has blocked any research in that area for years.

But I think looking at the many different posts it's clear that lax gun laws do not automatically translate into lack of crime, nor does strict gun control laws mean higher violent crime rate.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
My 12 yo daughter is just as disappointed they aren't real either. When our eldest child figured out at almost 4 that Santa wasn't real we never perpetuated the myth of any of the characters. It never bothered her until she watched this movie.

Re: Scariest thing that you've done

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-04-05 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
When I was a freshman in high school I had to watch my sisters every day after school for a little while because my mother didn't get home from work until 6 or 7 (I forget where my grandmother was during that time, but anyhow). Of course my little sisters used that as an excuse to act up and try to get away with things they weren't supposed to do when my parents were around, like buy candy from this shady lady who drove a van around my neighborhood selling candy to children (totally not a legit business and neither I nor my parents liked it).

So one day, I dragged the two oldest back inside to prevent them from wasting money on candy they weren't supposed to have in the first place, certainly not before dinner, and my oldest younger sister decided to throw one of her rollerblade skates at my head, which narrowly missed me. (Actually, I think it may have hit me on the shoulder or something.) I finally lost it, I was so angry, I just walked up to her and kneed her in the stomach as hard as I could, and I ended up knocking the wind out of her completely, because after all she was like ten years old and pretty tiny for her age. She clutched her torso and started rolling around on the ground gasping for air and obviously could not breathe, so I freaked out and grabbed the phone and just as I was about to call 911 she made this rasping sound and started breathing and said "I'm ok"

In hindsight, I still think she deserved it for being such a brat (since she was fine in the end) but when it happened, I was just like "OH SHIT I FUCKING KILLED MY SISTER"

Re: Farting cats

[personal profile] ryttu3k 2013-04-05 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, we had a flatulent cat. Look into changing their diet - there's specially formulated diets, especially for indoor cats, that reduce odours a bit.

Re: Well, yes.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Why on earth would it not be towards death? What sort of advantage would a creature have that is not oriented toward surviving (which involves, well...not dying)? And why are you treating death as something that always has to have some sort of bent philosophical component? Death is a physical thing that happens, regardless whether there's some nebulous higher "self" involved, and it's bad. And none of the fears that you listed would exist if it were not for the fact that avoiding those situations happens to also help one avoid dying.

The part you're getting hung up is the fact that humans have a capacity to philosophize, and so they do. But "philosophizing about death makes evolutionary sense" is not the same as "having an aversion to death makes evolutionary sense."

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I'm no Carol fan, I'll admit (Though it's because I'll never relate to or respect staying with a man who hurts your child pre-zombie apocalypse. And don't fucking tell me she had no choice. Just don't. It's not true and it won't be true despite what your emotions may tell you. Emotions aren't meant to rule you.)

...but 1) she's not that popular, 2) she's not that plain looking, 3) being old gains you no popularity in fandom.

Re: are you afraid of dying?

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-04-05 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think the idea of an afterlife is more terrifying. Nothing is more terrifying than eternity, eternal existence is just scary as hell. When I was forced to go to church as a kid I came up against this a lot, I had Sunday school teachers try to tell me things like "well a minute in Heaven is like a million years on earth" and I was just like "time is meaningless if existence is eternal so that doesn't make me feel any better".

Think about it, how would you not get bored of just BEING after a while? I feel more comfort knowing when I die my body will just decompose (or get burned to ash depending on what I decide)
